Josh Prigge, Hawaii Pacific University, Sustainability CoordinatorJosh Prigge currently works as the Sustainability Coordinator for Hawai’i Pacific University. Born and raised in Minnesota, Josh has developed professional suffer in teaching, coaching, management, and sales before rededicating his career to sustainability in 2009. She co-authored the program proposal for the 4-year degree and established an advisory committee consisting of a trans-disciplinary consortium of leaders in academia, trade industry and government. This committee has lead to forming partnerships and provided students of the program with internship employment in the field. Joie Taylor holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Clark Atlanta University, an M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Cornell University and is a certified Renewable Energy Professional (R.E.P.) by the Association of Energy Engineers. As advisory committee member of the International petite Islands Studies Association she has presented and published materials specific to sustainability in Hawai’i around the globe. As member and former chair of the UHMC’s Sustainability Committee she worked alongside individuals on campus sustainability initiatives and projects and spearheaded the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education AASHE STARS pre-assessment of the campus. She has worked with Hawaii Natural Energy Institute for data acquisition of PV systems and has completed the installation of the first water attribute lab on campus. She is fully lively in the community on Maui as a musician, martial artist, dancer, and meditation teacher.
Stacy Garcia, University of Hawai‘i West O‘ahu Student corpse PresidentStacy Kimo Garcia Jr. is a senior majoring in Political Science with a double concentration in Sociology. After serving in the United States Air Force, Stacy enrolled at the University of Hawai’i-West O’ahu in 2009. As an Instructor of English as Leeward Community College, she has been incorporating environmental education into her classes, and she is collaborating with colleagues to promote Sustainability across the Curriculum. She believes that educators gain a responsibility to animate present and future generations to deal with environmental challenges.
Jennifer Chirico, Maui College, Executive Director.Dr. Jennifer Chirico is the Executive Director of the Sustainable living Institute of Maui (SLIM) at the University of Hawaii Maui College (UHMC) and an adjunct professor in the Sustainable Science Management Bachelor’s program at UHMC. At SLIM, she is involved in a wide purview of community outreach activities related to increasing understanding of sustainability and how it can subsist adopted and implemented at both organizational and individual levels. She works with individuals and organizations from the public, private, educational, and non-profit sectors and presents to a variety of audiences on a wide purview of sustainability-related topics. She holds a Ph.D. in environmental policy and a master’s degree in public health. Her research expertise is in air quality, green building, transportation, sustainable squander management, and renewable energy. She is the founder of the Maui Chapter of Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) and serves on the boards for Hawaii WiRE, the Sustainability Association of Hawaii, the Hawaii Public Utility Commission IRP, and TEDxMaui.
Bob Franco, Kapiolani CC, Faculty and Director.Dr. Robert Franco is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Office for Institutional Effectiveness at Kapi’olani Community College. He is an ecological and urban anthropologist focusing on contemporaneous Hawaiian, Samoan, and Micronesian educational, employment, health, housing, and cultural issues. He has published scholarly and policy research on Samoan political and cultural change, the import and management of water in ancient Hawaii, and sociocultural factors affecting Oceanic fisheries. In 2009, he collaborated with the American Samoa Humanities Council to defer American Samoa’s first written history textbook.He provides national leadership on diversity and democracy issues for the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and the American Council on Education. For AAC&U, he serves on the Advisory Boards for their Community College Roadmap (MetLife-funded) and Bridging Cultures (NEH-funded) initiatives. In 2012, he was named one of 20 national “Beacons of Vision, Hope, and Action” by the Community College National seat for Community appointment (CCNCCE). He has led Hawaii’s statewide progress of service-learning with six grants from Hawaii-Pacific Islands Campus Compact (UHM) and the Corporation for National and Community Service.He currently serves as a Co-Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation (NSF) vouchsafe to integrate and institutionalize issue innovations, and oversees the evaluation of four major NSF grants at Kapi’olani. Kevin Griffin, UH Manoa, Campus Planner.Kevin Griffin is a Planner in the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Office of Physical, Environmental, and Long purview Planning. His specialties include institutional space planning, spatial analyses and complex reorganizations. He currently heads up the space information and planning efforts on campus and shares oversight of the UH Manoa Sustainability Council. With an understanding of the unique qualitative and quantitative space needs of a research and educational institution, Kevin has been able to optimize the exercise of existing true estate assets and assist in the planning efforts for future edifice and renovation work. Kevin holds a BS in Interior Design from Drexel University and an MS in Construction Administration from Columbia University. He is an NCIDQ Certificate holder and a LEED Accredited Professional. As a relative newcomer to the islands, Kevin hopes to contribute to, collaborate with, and learn from his recent home.
Philip Johnson, UH Manoa, Faculty.Dr. Philip Johnson is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii, and Director of the Collaborative Software progress Laboratory, whose members Do research on software engineering, renewable energy, and earnest game development. For the past four years, he has led the Kukui Cup Project, which explores how to exercise information technology to defer sustained positive changes in energy behavior. Anne Ku, UH Maui College, Project Director.Born in Brunei, Dr. Anne Ku spent her childhood in Taiwan and Okinawa before winning a full scholarship to Duke University where she majored in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. Her interest in sustainability grew while pursuing her doctorate in modelling uncertainty at the London trade School at the onset of the privatization and deregulation of electricity industries in the UK and elsewhere. Upon earning her Ph.D. in determination Sciences, she joined the research group at Enron in Houston and London and later traveled widely as editor of two energy magazines for Platts (a McGraw-Hill Company). Bill Labby, Leeward CC, Program Coordinator.Bill Labby is the Industry, Trades and Sustainability Programs Coordinator for the Office of Continuing Education and Workforce progress (OCEWD) at Leeward Community College. Bill recently expanded the Process Technology Program to include biofuels process operations including biodiesel and ethanol production. He has been working with the University of Hawaii, Pacific seat for Advanced Technical Training (PCATT) , Hawaiian Electric, Siemens, and other industry professionals on a project developing curriculum for bright Energy Management Systems-Smartgrid workforce training. He is a member of the Leeward Community College sustainability committee. Bill retired from the United States Navy in 2001 where he served as an Electronic Warfare Specialist. Bill is committed to the advancement of sustainable technology through training the next generation workforce to understand, install, operate, and maintain sustainable outfit and systems in the bailiwick of energy production transmission and distribution.

Suzette Robinson, UH Community Colleges, Director of Academic Programs.Suzette Robinson is the Director of Academic Programs in the Office of the Vice President for Community Colleges (OVPCC).As the Director of Academic Programs, she works with the campuses’ academic and student services leaders in matters related to student success. Prior to coming to OVPCC, she was at UHMaui College for 32 years. There she took on many roles–Coordinator of the Learning Center, English faculty/department chair, Director of Continuing Education, assistant Dean of Instruction, and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Her interest in “everything sustainable” began when she was Director of Continuing Education and had the chance to visit a number of colleges on the mainland such as University of Tennessee and University of California, San Diego where sustainability is a major component of the college’s everyday life style. Later, she had the chance to attend the International petite Island Studies Association (ISISA) conference in Taiwan where environmental leaders from petite islands around the world came together to partake their latest research on water recycling, squander management, and environmental (land and water) conditions. Paula AyotteScientist, Diver
Paula Ayotte is acting as fish team lead during the NOWRAMP cruise. Paula has participated in 7 Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (RAMP) cruises, doing fish surveys at over 40 Pacific islands as an employee of the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED) of the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science seat and as a confederate of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
During RAMP cruises, the fish team dives at as many as 9 sites per day to assess fish diversity and abundance. Surveys retract dwelling at depths ranging from a few feet up 100 feet using two methods: stationary counts and belt transect surveys. Fish team members need to gain in-depth learning of Hawaiian fish taxonomy as they signify and size hundreds of swirling fish and classify them in one of the 200 or so species recorded by scientists.
Yumi YasutakeScientist, Diver
Yumi Yasutake is a member of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument education and outreach team, serving as the Program Coordinator for Mokupapapa Discovery Center, an educational facility in Hilo, Hawaii. Originally from Wailua, Kauai, Yumi is a lifelong fisherman, diver, and overall lover of the ocean. When he's not chasing fish, he's either bow hunting or working in his garden.
Kevin LinoResearch Biologist
Kevin was born and raised in Pennsylvania and attended Edinboro University where he acquired his BS in Biology. After too much unruffled water diving he conducted coral reef research in Roatan, Honduras and San Salvador, Bahamas. Graduation he worked as a pre-college instructor at Wallop's Island Consortium in Virginia teaching coastal ecology to grade school and tall school students. He moved to Hawaii to drudgery as a fisheries observer on the Honolulu tuna and swordfish long line fishing fleet. He has been working with NOAA's Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED) since 2005 when he started with the marine debris team removing derelict fishing gear in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. He has worked with CRED primarily as a Marine Ecosystems Research Specialist and acts as the permit coordinator for monitoring and mapping research the division conducts throughout the Pacific. While primarily a fish diver, he too assists with the divisions other research teams that are focused on coral reef ecosystems in the Line & Phoenix islands and throughout the Marianas and Hawaiian archipelagos.
Dr. Steven G. Smith is a research scientist hailing from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. He has expertise in population dynamics of marine fishes and invertebrates, fisheries assessment, and biostatistics. With his colleague Dr. Jerry Ault, Dr. Smith has been working for the past three years with the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument on the design and implementation of a Monument-wide statistical sampling survey to assess the populations of fishes, benthic invertebrates, and algae in shallow water coral reef habitats (less than 100 feet). He is very excited to participate in the bailiwick implementation of the statistical design as a fish survey diver, especially after spending most of his time working for the Monument analyzing data from past research cruises on while his computer in Miami, Florida.
Jonatha GiddensScientist, Diver
I grew up down east (MA) where I scholarly to dive, became a captain, and sailed to Hawaii. Here I gain organize my educational and career pathways to the sea. My background is in Marine Science and Anthropology (UH Hilo) and the practical integration of companionable and ecological sciences. Currently I drudgery with community-based marine monitoring programs in Puako, West Hawaii, with a special interest in Hawaiian perspectives and Local Ecological Knowledge. I aim to merit my Ph.D. in Zoology at UH Manoa studying the differential effects of removing Roi (an introduced grouper) on the present reef fish assemblage, as well as examine the fundamental vis-à-vis realized niche of Roi under varying levels of competition. Overall, my purpose is to drudgery on, in, and for the ocean, realizing that their lives arrive from, depend on, and are blessed by water.

Originally from Minnesota, Krista attended UC Santa Barbara where she studied Biopsychology. After graduating in 1999, she became certified to dive and shortly thereafter went back to school at Brooks Institute of Photography to pursue a career in underwater photography. She has worked in CA, Oahu and Kona as a dive instructor and has developed her photography portfolio throughout the Pacific. For the past 2 years she has served as the Regional Coordinator for Reef Check Hawaii, a community-based coral reef monitoring and education organization.
Hailey RameyScientist, Diver
Hailey was raised on Maui and graduated from the University of Hawaii Hilo with a B.A. in Marine Science in 2006. An avid diver since the age of twelve, she has always had a devout devotion of the ocean and fishes in particular. This is her first cruise to the North Western Hawaiian Islands and she couldn't subsist more excited. She is hoping to obtain some near encounters with her favorite animal, the tiger shark.

Elizabeth KehnScientist, Diver
Elizabeth was born and raised in Connecticut and attended the University of Vermont where she received a BS in Wildlife Biology. After graduation she traveled in Central America for a year where she volunteered as a diver for a coral reef research project in Honduras, and started her career as a marine biologist. She moved to Kauai in 1997 where she worked at the Hanalei Wildlife refuge. She then spent a few years on Maui working as a dive instructor on a charter sailboat before affecting to Oahu. She has worked with NOAA since 2001 when she joined the initial large scale marine debris cleanly up in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, lead by NMFS Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED). She worked for CRED for 7 years as a Coral Reef Ecosystems Specialist participating in monitoring cruises around the Pacific. She has been with Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument since 2007 as the Research Specialist.
Rodney WithallScientist, Coral Surveys
Rodney Withall works as a biologist within NOAA's Coral Reef Ecosystem Division in Honolulu. Originally from Ontario, Canada, Rodney began scuba diving 15-years ago in the frigid Great Lakes and virtually was inspired to become a marine biologist. He has a BS in marine biology from the University of British Columbia and an MS in biology from the University of recent Brunswick where his main research interests were in the biodiversity and molecular systematics of marine macroalgae. He has previously worked at developing DNA-based detection methods for harmful algal blooms and as a dive instructor on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Having recently expanded his interest to algal-coral interactions and coral ecology, Rodney is aboard coral diversity and size structure surveys. This is his first trip to the Northwest Hawaiian Islands.
Hi'ilei KaweloTraditional Ecological learning Team
Angela Hi'ilei Kawelo is a lawai'a (fisherwoman) born into a fishing family of Kahalu'u, O'ahu. Hi'ilei has scholarly and continues to learn the fishing practices of her family from her father. Of the practices taught to her, are that of 'okilo he'e (octopus spotting), lu'u kai (spear fishing), gathering limu (seaweed) and other petite invertebrates, net fishing and trap fishing. Hi'ilei is the Executive Director of Paepae o He'eia a non-profit that cares for He'eia Fishpond on the island of O'ahu. This cruise is Hi'ilei's second cruise, the purpose of which is to continue her Traditional Ecological learning project called the Cultural Health Index or Cultural Reef Assessment Model.

Galbraith "Gabby" Lohiauipo Kawelo is a lawai'a (fisherman), born and raised in Kahalu'u, O'ahu along the shores of Kane'ohe Bay. The smooth waters of Kane'ohe Bay allow for many different styles of fishing to subsist employed. Fishing in the Bay is seasonal. Different species of i'a (fish and invertebrates) and limu (seaweed) are gathered at different times of the year. Gabby is an opportunistic fisherman, season, dictates what is caught. Gabby is a spear fisherman, a net fisherman, a trap fisherman and an 'okilo he'e (ocotpus spotter). Gabby is joining his daughter on this cruise, continuing a Traditional Ecological learning (TEK) project in Paphanaumokuakea.
Graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1997 with a BS. I moved to Hawaii in 1998, graduated with my Ph.D. in Botany in 2006, and gain worked at Hawaii Institute for Marine Biology ever since. My primary research focus is on population genetics, evolution, and fisheries management. I specialize in marine invertebrates, such as the Hawaiian limpets (opihi). In my spare time I'm an avid triathlete.
Matt was born and raised on the island of Oahu, but currently works on Maui as a Ranger for DLNR in Ahihi-Kinau Natural zone Reserve, Marine Protected zone in Makena. He attended school at Beloit College and Cornell University majoring in Natural Resource Management.
Kate Cullison leads the intrepid algae team, which is collecting data and samples throughout the monument to determine the species composition and biogeographic distribution of crustose coralline algae in the Hawaiian archipelago. Kate received her biology degree from the University of Maryland while working for the Smithsonian Institution's Marine Systems Lab. She returned to Hawaii in 2005 to study marine algae with the UH botany department under Dr. Isabella Abbott and Celia Smith. She is interested in studying the threats to coastal marine environments, specifically invasive species, pollution, and habitat degradation. This is her third year of research in the Monument aboard the Hi'ialakai.
John ConeyScientist, Diver
John works for the Marine Option Program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the Marine Science Department as staff uphold and coordinates scientific diving at UHH. Born and raised in Hawaii, sailing around Ni'ihau as a puerile kid was the farthest North he has gone in the Hawaiian Islands and he is most excited to subsist a allotment of this research trip! Recruited due to his excellent skills with underwater photography and his steadiness as a diver in unpredictable situations, John will subsist a faultfinding member of the coralline algae team. John's goals on this trip, besides providing research and dive support, is to bring back a sense of some of the research drudgery to partake with the students.
Daniel TurnerData Manager
Daniel is a GIS Developer for Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. He received a B.A. in History of Science from the University of Chicago, undertook graduate studies in Anthropology from the University of Virginia, and completed a M.S. in Geographic Information Science from the University of Texas.
Sarah HarrisNOAA Corps Officer
LTJG Sarah A.T. Harris is a NOAA Corps Officer on assignment to the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument as the Vessel Operations Coordinator. She manages the Monuments three petite boats and ensures that the boats as well as totality operators are in compliance with the NOAA petite Boat Program. Due to a shortage of coxswains she will subsist driving the Monuments 19' safe boat, R/V Kaku during the RAMP cruise.
