system i retail outlets involved in Java-based internet portals may additionally believe an interest to listen to concerning the newest release of IBM‘s WebSphere Portlet manufacturing unit. big Blue says the latest release, version 6.1.2, brings enhancements a superior route to enable developers to acquire web 2.0 purposes up and working faster than earlier than.
WebSphere Portlet manufacturing unit is a home windows-primarily based device designed to simplify the structure of J2EE portlet applications and dispose of the want for direct coding. The utility runs on properly of WebSphere application Server models 6 or 7, and helps sum foremost operating systems–including i5/OS and IBM i OS.
With version 6.1.2, IBM has delivered a few enhancements that it says speeds evolution and preservation of portals, which is at sum times a concern. a nature of elements is the capacity to swiftly “re-brand” a gross net portal with a centralized theme from one place.
crew structure has additionally been improved because of new versioning capabilities and greater superior skill to determine and add files to source ply repositories.
This free up furthermore introduces a library of pre-built connectors for exposing Representational condition switch (relaxation) services from back-end systems. this may create it less demanding to collect applications from reusable chunks of services–a key Part of carrier oriented architecture (SOA).

Now that IBM has sold its Portal, Commerce, Notes and Domino on-premises offerings to HCL Industries, it seems that imposing Blue is pushing its chips into the hub of the desk on IBM Watson and the cloud. one of the crucial tools under the Watson umbrella that continues to garner attention in internet content administration (WCM) circles is IBM Watson content Hub, so I decided to provide it a fade and spot what the entire fuss turned into about.
My first mistake turned into to google IBM Watson and mark up for a free crucible on the ibm.com/watson page. My registration gave me access to sum styles of Watson-branded tools, together with Watson Language Translator, Watson Assistant, the Watson IoT platform and the Watson Voice Agent.
but, the one product that did not believe entry with a free crucible on IBM Watson changed into IBM Watson content material Hub. After wasting about 10 to 15 minutes in the IBM Cloud rabbit hole, i realized that the IBM Watson content material Hub instrument wasn't anywhere to breathe discovered after I signed up for IBM Watson.IBM is branding everything that moves with the appellation Watson. So, now what?
I headed again to Google and exceptionally searched the IBM Watson content material Hub time period. This generated an engrossing outcome. Google offered a number of links, the first of which requested me to head to IBM Watson Latvia, the 2d asked me to slither to IBM Watson Czech Republic. i used to breathe really shopping from Toronto, so I institute this fairly confusing. much more baffling became that the supplied URLs contained my language and nation code, en-ca, within them. despite sum the quiz-demonstrate-winning acumen Watson possesses, IBM's flagship AI instrument seems to reflect that Latvia is a Part of English-speaking Canada.
How on this planet could an IBM-generated URL with embedded en-ca relent verbiage about countries in japanese Europe? It would not create any feel.
neatly, I may silent teach that it does not create sense until you believe got ever tried to internationalize a site with IBM WebSphere Portal or IBM's Digital relish manager. these apparatus don't create I18N an facile project. Seeing IBM's internet content material administration tools generate non-English-Canadian content for English Canadian sites tells me that no longer even IBM's personal WCM experts recognize a route to exercise these IBM apparatus with ease. Why is IBM Watson together with Latvia and Czech Republic in a clearly English Canadian request?
in any case, I clicked on the IBM Watson Latvia hyperlink, which took me to IBM Watson Canada. From there i attempted to register for a free trial. I teach tried, because it took me several makes an attempt. You see, the registration required a password of eight characters, one uppercase letter, one lowercase epistle and at least one number. I submitted the registration profile using 18Indian as the password. that is two numbers, one uppercase epistle and eight characters in total. however, IBM's Jeopardy-winning AI expertise blocked my registration.
i realized the password container became punitively highlighted purple, and the solemnize debilitated adjoined it. i would met sum of the stated password necessities, but the benign silent blocked me.Watson registration password container has a secret, undocumented requirement. are you able to spot it?
I delivered a ninth letter, however the instrument didn't devotion 18Indians both. It looked to me devotion the gross registration profile turned into damaged. As i used to breathe about search for AWS content Hub, I decided to throw a tenth epistle into the mix, and miraculously, i was allowed to register.
but I believe to say, sum of these system faults and complications believe been definitely starting to dry me, and that i'd barely made it previous the registration wall. IBM has branded so many items with the Watson appellation that I find it overwhelming and complicated. in addition, regardless of IBM's 20 years within the WCM game, it silent can't emerge to result I18N and search engine marketing safely. and at last, on anything so simple as consumer registration, the company managed to supply whatever thing so perplexing and non-intuitive that it just about drove me, a pro veteran of the IT container, to a competitor.
IBM seems to breathe making a stake the farm on Watson and the cloud. but if this exhibit of ineptitude is the most excellent its AI product can do, consumers will need to supply their WCM tools from a unique pasture. definitely IBM can result greater.View sum video clips

In the highly amplified world of information technology, the chatter about what’s next almost always drowns out the talk about what the majority of companies are capable of doing to serve their businesses today. Innovation makes the news, but in the true world innovation isn’t the extreme sport that it’s often portrayed. true innovation is results oriented. If you want to know the reality of IT departments running Lotus software on the IBM i platform, talk with some just companies.
There’s a worthy deal of innovation going on if you are willing to set innovation in perspective with where a given company has been and where it is going. Being evolutionary has always been more Popular than being revolutionary. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, there are many superior reasons for it. withhold in humor that in some instances, the pace of evolution is quite brisk. Other times, it’s excruciatingly slow.
Whatever your preconceived notions are about companies that sprint Lotus Domino on the IBM i platform, let these four examples either reinforce your thinking or open your eyes to what life is devotion in this environment.
Gabriele Spaszewski — Dachser GmbH & Co. KG
Dachser is one of Europe’s leading logistics companies. For years it has sprint its commerce on IBM AS/400s, iSeries, System i, and now Power Systems with IBM i. And for as long as there has been Lotus Notes and Domino, Dachser has depended on that combination of servers and software to ply workflow and a substantial load of commerce communications with profound integration to its home-grown transport management software. It’s had opportunities to migrate from these systems, but has chosen not to.
There’s a tenacious connection between the IBM i platform and Lotus software users, but it’s a difficult one to allocate any numbers. I know for a fact it’s hard to find an IBMer who will quantify this connection. That’s just the route it goes in the IBM i server commerce these days. But coming out of the annual Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida, three weeks ago, with its emphasis on Lotus as the leading edge of sociable business, I looked for some customers who would narrate me what they were up to.
Dachser has a centralized Lotus environment on IBM i. It furthermore has an experienced, well-educated staff to create it labor well and the willingness to innovate.
The main mail server, a Power6-based Power 570, hosts 11,300 registered users in 240 branches and includes mail files in 11 languages. That equates to approximately 400,000 emails routed per day with an just mail delivery time of less than 1 second.
Those 11,000-plus users are in the processing of moving from Lotus Notes 7.0.1 on Citrix Presentation Server 4 to Notes 8.5.1 on XenApp 5. And soon after, there’s a draw to upgrade the servers to 8.5.2. The Notes database houses more than 200 document libraries and more than 100 in-house developed Lotus Notes applications that range from a simple dictionary to a involved CRM system that is accessed by nearby to 1,000 employees each day.
Three additional IBM i servers are set up for specific duties: one for Lotus Sametime integrated chat, one for a third-party content management system, and one for a portion of the CRM system.
Apart from the in-house developed apps, third-party products are used for group calendaring, fax software, and data transfer and synchronization between Lotus Domino and supported external systems.
The only pieces that don’t sprint on IBM i are the servers accessed by BlackBerry mobile users, which IBM did not design to sprint on IBM i.
“We are lucky that they believe a lot of iSeries know-how in their company,” says Gabriele Spaszewski, team leader of Lotus Notes administration at Dachser in an email from Lotusphere. “They really know their job and they serve us tailoring the OS so that it fits their needs. This is absolutely necessary if you draw to sprint Domino on iSeries, because unfortunately there aren’t a lot of people around knowing how to ply Domino on iSeries–you believe a hard time finding some experts.”
Bob Laing — Independent Contractor
As an independent contractor in western New York, Bob Laing works with more than a dozen IBM i shops that sprint Domino and a few that sprint Domino on Windows. His view is a microcosm of the Domino on IBM i landscape. His clients are primarily manufacturers, but with a yoke of insurance companies furthermore in the mix. Most believe an IBM i history that includes the iSeries, the AS/400, and the System/36 and System/38 eras.
The IT shops Laing supports vary in size from 10 users up to 500 users. He is the IT staff at tiny shops, while the larger companies believe IT staffs in the range of 15 to 20 people, where his Domino expertise and IBM software/hardware skills (hardware installations, OS upgrades, PTF installations, and performance tuning) supplements the full-time personnel.
Most of his customers are current on OS and software upgrades, but are operating at a fairly basic feature/function flat with runt custom tweaking and performance tuning. They’ve been running this route for years, preferring the stability and the manageability that Domino on IBM i offers to the hoopla of sociable commerce and cloud computing, which are runt more than curiosities at this point.
“I just went through a project where three Windows servers were consolidated to an existing iSeries,” Laing says. “The only required tuning involved the overnight backups. Domino runs worthy on iSeries and the box manages the reminiscence it uses, the disk space it uses, and it can breathe tweaked–but I believe never seen that done locally. I’ve often seen shops consolidating from multiple iSeries to one iSeries because you no longer need multiple machines to acquire the needed flat of performance.”
“Leveraging the sociable aspects of the Lotus software line is not a tall priority. Most shops are doing traditional email and traditional client-based applications. I’d teach less than 25 percent of the shops are just now getting into Web-enabling their 10-to-15-year-old Notes applications.”
In his slice of the customer base, he sees a handful using HA solutions and Domino clustering and several are looking into making exercise of mobile applications. The obstacle, on more than one occasion, has been mobile apps required to sprint on Windows servers. These are shops that are leery of bringing in more Windows servers. The preferred workaround, for now, is using mail forwarding to acquire information to smartphones.
There is a parallel to traditional email and traditional client-based applications. It is traditional skills.
“I discern a skills vacuum for people who possess both legacy skills and modern skills,” Laing says. “There are a lot of RPG programmers with skills that should breathe updated, but for various reasons they aren’t going to learn modern techniques. The very can breathe said for a lot of Domino developers. They believe been doing the very thing for 10 years, and as technology evolves, they don’t evolve as well.”
Regardless, Laing says, “In my neck of the woods there is a vigorous install of Domino on iSeries. I don’t anticipate it changing by more shops migrating to the iSeries or migrating away from the iSeries.”
Rick Davis — Frisbie Memorial Hospital
In March 2001, a separate Domino R5 server was deployed at this Rochester, New Hampshire, hospital. There were 51 registered users. By the time Rick Davis joined the IT staff in 2008, the user list had expanded to approximately 500, with about 350 of those using the Notes client and 150 using the browser-based iNotes. The number of users continued to grow, and today there are 258 iNotes users and 383 using the Notes client. The server is running Domino 8.5.1 and there’s an upgrade to 8.5.1 in progress for the clients. There are plans to roll out Lotus Traveler (for mobile apps) in the near future and the exercise of Sametime (instant messaging, voice over IP, and audio-video conferencing) is in the “under consideration” phase.
Davis is a one-man IT staff. He handles administration duties and some evolution chores. On some platforms it would breathe ridiculous to reflect it could breathe a one-person job. Davis does acquire some assistance.
He says contracting with a Domino hosting service has been a worthy serve to the hospital, which was searching for a route to securely deliver information to providers “outside the network.” The hosting service was the key to secure information replication.
At the very time, the hospital has increased the number of Notes applications that electronically track and document many processes that were previously paper-based. Those applications comprehend coverage calendars, variance reporting, HIPAA violation tracking, key and badge requests, surveys, change requests, network management and many more. Davis points out that the managers now believe accurate data for planning and evaluation purposes.
A tall availability system is furthermore under way. It includes a second iSeries box and a second Domino server clustered with the existing production server. Fail over testing has been scheduled so upgrades of the OS, processors, and reminiscence in the current production server can breathe accomplished while maintaining commerce continuity.
The only problem region that Davis revealed was an ongoing issue with the client upgrade process.
“Over the years there has been no defined install process. Or perhaps there was, but it changed every six weeks,” he says. “We’re finding components in folders and places they never anticipated. This has required a bit more ‘hands-on’ than they would believe liked.”
Davis says the bond that connects Domino and the IBM i is very strong, but he stops short of saw the two will remain forever linked.
“Both Domino and most of the non-Domino medical applications sprint on the iSeries,” Davis says. “As they continue to grow and stress the capacity of the iSeries, the option to slither Domino to another platform will always breathe under consideration. But for the foreseeable future, Domino will remain on the iSeries and the iSeries will remain the production server platform.”
Eric A. Jewett — McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital
In most cases where IBM i is the operating system of election for Domino, core commerce applications are running on that platform. It began that route at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio, but the facility is in the process of migrating its main hospital system to Linux. In the short term, that will believe no repercussion on a conclusion to slither Domino off the IBM i platform.
Because the hospital makes exercise of a multi-partitioned box, it has realized many advantages–specifically, separate partitions for email, WebSphere Portal, and a test environment for both WebSphere and Domino.
“We went from two Windows servers to a multiple LPAR for Domino,” Jewett says. “And at that very time, they moved to Domino 6.5.”
That was a bit of a jagged road–the Domino upgrades of that era were notoriously ugly–and it required some serve from a commerce ally to smooth the transition. But as Jewett says, “Once they got through that, they never looked back. They now believe Sametime and Quikr running on the iSeries, and another application server as well. The only Intel Domino server in this blend is for BlackBerry (only runs on Windows). Given the choice, they probably would breathe running that on iSeries, too.”
In the LPAR environment, Jewett can sprint multiple releases of Domino, which is handy for testing new applications. The test environments comprehend pretty much everything that’s in the production environment. And it allows regression testing while making Domino upgrades.
“Currently they believe two different Domino releases,” Jewett says. But there believe been times–because of add-in packages and questions of compatibility–we’ve had three releases running at one time.”
The hospital is up to date with Domino 8.5.2 for everything that’s capable of running on it.
The majority of users–the line of commerce staffers–have access to browser-based applications. Jewett says, “A lot of newer and more sophisticated apps believe been built for browsers, but the supervisory staff silent relies primarily on applications running on the Notes client especially when accessing older departmental databases. Some composites application evolution is furthermore in the mix.
Jewett describes his job as being mostly focused on the admin side of things. His affinity for the platform is clear.
“The fact that Domino on the i has been tremendously stable has been a worthy benefit. Once it is up and running, it stays running and they believe very few issues,” he says. Although he claims his evolution skills are a bit stale, he wants to tackle the modernization of some of the client-based apps.
“It’s not been a tall priority to this point because of limited time,” is the intimate refrain Jewett evokes. “The top of the priority list is generally taking pervade of things that are broken as is the case when dealing with older applications. There are things that we’d devotion to slither over to the browser and consume handicap of new features. The time to labor on those projects isn’t there right now.”
The lease on the hospital’s current iSeries will soon expire. Jewett says there’s no consideration given to leaving the platform.
“We will breathe scaling down their hardware buy because there’s a terabyte of disk space or more that is tied up in the hospital system, which is no longer needed on the i. But the platform has been very stable and the licensing model is not conducive to switching to individual Linux or Windows servers. Besides, managing that workload [on the Linux or Windows side] would not breathe something that I could add to my duties.”

1. We’re here with Jerry Cuomo, CTO of IBM WebSphere, talking about Cloud Computing. Jerry, give us an update of what’s going on in the Cloud.
For the most Part they are silent looking at the taxonomy of the Cloud, the route we’ve been - infrastructure, services as the foundation and for the most Part infrastructure services continue to slither on. They believe a number of things going on around the IBM Cloud. The IBM store is silent resident at Amazon, so you can acquire a bunch of IBM middleware there. Platform services are benign of moving up the stack. They are starting to set a lot of focus on that and hopefully they can chat a runt bit about that as well.
Software-as-a-Service is the third region of the taxonomy. Again, they believe a number of things going on at that flat as well. Certainly, they are looking at the Cloud as infrastructure services, platform services and Software-as-a-Service. As they talked about before, the thing that makes us a bit unique in IBM is they don’t discriminate about where they run. Running them on-premise (a lot of customers devotion to start with their services running in a safe spot on-premise), off-premise in a public Cloud (I mentioned before to you some of their public offerings) and then engrossing combinations or hybrid.
Public, private and hybrid is their focus. When they tender things across that taxonomy, they are always thinking about the variations of public, private and hybrid. I reflect that makes us a bit unique in how we’re going about their Cloud taxonomy.
2. You mentioned hybrid. This is something that they haven’t heard too much of. Can you narrate us a runt bit about what is Hybrid Cloud?
Hybrid Cloud is using the best aspects of public cloud and furthermore using capability that you believe behind your data centered firewall. Examples that they discern around infrastructure services, grow your infrastructure up to a inevitable point and then as you start to overflow, you overflow into the Public Cloud thinking about renting capacity on demand when you need it. That’s a very engrossing exercise case. For specimen we, in IBM, result some of their scalability tests by renting machines either from other parts of the IBM using the IBM Cloud or Amazon to sprint scalability tests, client workload drivers.
When we’re done, they give them back. That’s an engrossing exercise of Hybrid for testing. There is furthermore Hybrid for exercise around structure commerce applications. You believe a lot of your services running resident in your company, perhaps your systems of record sprint resident. But then outsourcing across the internet for other capabilities - shipping services, even CRM services from companies devotion Salesforce - and structure these hybrid applications that perhaps silent exercise your system of record on site, but then venture out to exercise services on the public internet. It’s another profile of structure hybrid applications.
3. Is that another word for SOA?
It’s absolutely another word for SOA. They certainly leer at this as a Service Oriented Architecture, whether you are an administrator working on your infrastructure, you are interacting with your infrastructure as a set of services or if you are an application or services consumer creating composite application. You want to breathe able to pick from capabilities you believe running behind your firewall and furthermore capabilities that you believe running outside your firewall.
But with this nature of SOA you believe to reflect about governing, you believe to reflect about security in ways that you probably weren’t before it and certainly perhaps not as stringently when everything is running in your data center. Thinking about how you access services publicly and being able to audit the information being accessed in both directions, perhaps providing a secure tunnel between you and that Public Cloud, so that the data flowing is protected. These are the considerations when your SOA goes out beyond your corporate firewall. Yes, it’s absolutely a profile of SOA.
4. Developers watch to breathe excited about Platform-as-a-Service. What does IBM believe to teach about that and what’s in store?
With infrastructure services the image is the central piece. With platform services the application becomes the hub piece. Let me justify to you a runt bit more about what I carry weight by that. In infrastructure services you consume an image and you deploy that image to your favorite Cloud service and within that image it’s benign of devotion a black box. The nature of application, the nature of platform, is sum up to you. You’ve fertilized that black box with whatever you want to set in it.
With a platform service you really approach to that platform with an view about the nature of application that you want to run. Most platform services believe some benign of personality. For example, they sprint Java applications, they sprint .NET applications or they sprint some special variety of an application - reflect Force.com that will sprint an application that runs within the Saleforce ecosystem. Certainly, they believe a big evolution community around IBM and WebSphere and Java.
Naturally, their platform services they want to focus on the things that we’re really tenacious at - being able to process applications in the vein of JEE, being able to not just tender the application runtime capabilities, but teach you approach to their platform with a WAR file. Not just bring the WAR file, but bring some flat of QoS policy, some document that describes what your view of goodness is for this application. Does it believe to breathe highly available? Does it believe to breathe secured in a special way? What’s your policy around health? How much reminiscence is it allowed to consume? etc.
With that policy, they can consume off your hands a lot of the cumbersome activities around managing that application - managing its scale, managing its performance, managing its health. The engrossing thing when they reflect about Platform-as-a-Service. They reflect about the application first. You approach in perhaps as a developer to the platform service with an application and some intentions about how well that application should run.
We then process that and they create the application sprint to meet the needs of that contract. It’s a very effectual benign of environment for developers to sprint existing applications and perhaps to build new styles of applications.
5. Is IBM planning to result any benign of Platform-as-a-Service offering? What would breathe the preferred model and language and approach?
Given their approach at the WebSphere, the retort is absolutely yes. We’re well on their route of structure that, even testing it with a select set of customers. You can watch the space coming to an IBM Cloud near you soon. We’ll breathe their Platform-as-a-Service. What environments, you ask? Of course Java centered environments is a superior spot to start across. They believe a lot of expertise in that region so we’ll certainly breathe bringing that at the core of the platform, although they believe that they can tender a platform environment that can tender multiple runtime selections, multiple dialects of Java and APIs around Java, so JEE.
Think about the hundreds of thousands if not millions of applications that are in today around that API set. They certainly want to breathe a runt leverage the skills and people’s competency in that area. They want to breathe able to consume your JEE application to the IBM PaaS and sprint it. But they furthermore believe that there is other emerging programming models that complement JEE very well, whether it’s data centric models that allow you to result things devotion data analytics, map reduce kinds of things, operations on data grids. sum of these kinds of workloads we’d devotion to breathe able to uphold as well within their PaaS.
6. How result architects need to reflect differently in terms of their design and programming models when they are in an environment of unlimited skill and resources?
You Somehow want architects to continue to reflect about the basic aspects of application design, because at some flat that really hasn’t changed. The model-view-controller paradigm of architecture is silent very much the application architecture of choice. They want people to bring that forward and incrementally consume some of the newer capabilities that we’re bringing around Cloud and its notion of elastic scale and the like.
One of the things that you should reflect about is how you bind to your services. One of the things that we’re looking to tender as they leer at their platform for architecture and design is to start lifting out core services that are typically Part of your application runtime and making those shared services at the platform level. Queuing, data access, some of the core functional services, but furthermore I’d teach non-functional services if people subscribe to that including workload management, how you manage your logs, security even.
Lifting those out and providing those as more global capabilities around the Cloud server, being able to declare what your application truly depends on, what services. You may believe a web application that requires data services so you want to breathe able to bring up the mappings of your database schema. You may believe requirements around publish and subscribe so you want to reflect about the services you need around your queuing capabilities.
You may believe security requirements, perhaps separate sign-on. Being able to declare those services upfront gives you some flexibility within your application not to believe that embedded, but to utilize some of the external services. The unruffled Part about utilizing the external services is those services are managed for you. They already stood up; you don’t believe to worry about the provisioning of those capabilities, the property of service of those capabilities. You can pretty much assume they are there and that’s pretty powerful. Now you can just focus on the core of your application.
7. Some of the things you said about queuing and data sounds a lot devotion Amazon. How are you going to differentiate? What would breathe the imposing inequity of IBM’s PaaS offerings?
We actually believe products in the marketplace that believe years and years of notoriety - DB 2 for data, WebSphere Application Server, MQ for queuing. We’re using those products as the underpinnings for their shared services. They are not at some flat black boxes. When you leer at some of the competitors out there in this space, you don’t know how those things are implemented. Perhaps you don’t believe to know, at some level.
But the engrossing Part (remember the early Part of this discussion) is that their customers seem to want to breathe able to sprint these services behind their firewall. They devotion the Cloud notion, they devotion the notion of a self-help portal to fade and to serve yourself to a dose of some runtime environment. They devotion the capacity to breathe able to manage those environments elastically and to specify their requirements through QoS documents. That goes whether they are running it on-premise or off-premise.
The unruffled Part is when we’re backing that with capability that your IT shop may already breathe sensible of. Taking a DB 2, taking a WebSphere and now running it in, you probably believe organizational capability around those tools. Believe it or not, in a Cloud environment you’ll believe middleware powering the Cloud, then the middleware will believe logs, they’ll believe command lines and someone has to fade and manage those things.
While we’re putting facades on top of these and we’re making them for specimen more friendly about working in multitenant environments, etc., people will believe to operate these things. When you are operating the IBM Cloud, the piece powering the data is going to breathe DB 2. There are many tens of thousands of administrators for DB 2 out there. So you want to believe to skill up on that and the very thing about the runtime environments.
You’ll recognize the runtime environments, how you interact with it, command line interfaces and sum of the garnishes that they believe around WebSphere. Being able to result logging services, JMX and sum of the capabilities that we’ve known to well and worship will breathe Part of that ecosystem. While it could breathe made to breathe a black box, you can furthermore leer into that black box and what you discern you’ll recognize.
8. What about Cloud portability? IBM coming from the background of being one of the founders of JEE, what result you teach about that?
Absolutely spot on. One of the things that I’m really surprised of is that the very very customers that were very vocal back in the day and silent are about JEE, about wanting this environment where there is devotion a flat thing playing domain from an API’s perspective where they believe community processes, where they believe the likes of Sun and IBM and others coming to the table, they’ve benign of gotten taciturn around the gross Cloud space.
I believe standards are every bit as important. The right ones sprint anywhere standards are silent with us, are silent a key point. They want to breathe able to give that customer the right to build a set of assets and sprint it on vendor A’s cloud, and if vendor A lets it down in any way, slither it to vendor B’s cloud without having to start from scratch. The flat of standards around APIs for Cloud interoperability, to breathe able to deploy, to breathe able to run, to breathe able to debug and manage, that is key, that hasn’t gone away.
When they leer at how we’re bringing their Platform-as-a-Service and their infrastructure into focus as I said earlier, we’re doing it in such a route that doesn’t lock you in, to either running on public or private. They want to breathe able to allow you to pick what’s right for your commerce (even hybrid combinations), but furthermore they want to continue to labor with others from the industry that they worked with for years on one of those standards. Because, let’s set it this way, JEE and the standards around Java are putting my kids through school.
I want the next generation of APIs to allow us to compete the very way, because I reflect that’s that liberty of action that really sold their customer on us as vendors. They could dream it up with the best of them, for sure. I know their competitors can too, but I’d devotion to hear from their users and I devotion them to breathe as hard on us as they were when they were when demanding sum us to sit at the table, the JEE table, the JSE table for standards and currency of those Cloud standards, etc. It’s a superior question and I hope their customers silent interrogate those superior questions because they are superior questions.
9. If there were Cloud standards for Platform-as-a-Service. What might that leer like? ?
I reflect there would breathe different APIs that would address different areas of the Cloud. At the intersection of the platform and the infrastructure there is the need for an API. There are open source projects devotion Eucalyptus, as an example, that try to abstract the provisioning of an environment. I reflect ensuring that we’re not locked in at the API flat from their provisioning perspective so that your PaaS could sit on top of the IBM Cloud, the Amazon Cloud or whatever else Cloud out there is important.
That’s one level. I mentioned earlier that within a PaaS environment you want to register services, you want your database service or your messaging service, etc. The contracts between the PaaS and those services are very distinguished to acquire right. Let’s teach the Cloud registry that registered these services - What is the format of that registry? What does it consume to breathe a plug-in into that registry? That’s another specimen at the application service flat of what that would sum breathe and how you plug in with that.
Perhaps even the containers, the different uphold for let’s teach programming APIs, whether it’s JEE, whether it’s scripting or it’s some other jargon of API, to breathe able to register those with the platform service as well. Those would breathe some examples and I reflect from the edge of the IaaS to the PaaS there are APIs. Within the PaaS there are APIs and probably around the admin system there are a variety of APIs for doing things devotion receiving your logging information alerts, etc. the more they can standardize the shape of it.
I don’t want to imply that there aren’t activities going out in the industry; there absolutely are. But they want to hear back from the user community around which ones are resonating with them and we’d devotion to give you that feedback too on which ones are resonating with us.
10. How does one manage to abide in orchestrate between internal and external clouds and the deployment of different parts of the application?
One of the things that’s enticing about the public SaaS services out there is their price, their availability. There is more and more of them every day and of course if you could fade global, you would discern this n-dimensional thing. If you fade to China, there is a gross set of commerce services there, is a gross set of commerce services there. How is best to consume these services? How result you build these composite applications? Exactly what you said - Where result you set the data? How result you access the data?
What we’re seeing is that their customers and especially customers coming from a tradition of bigger enterprise can’t believe multiple systems of record. To reflect that they are going to breathe using off-premise services and putting their customer databases out there isn’t a superior thought. We’re introducing environments, devotion their Cast Iron environment, we’re putting process governance in spot to allow you to result things devotion create workflows.
In fact you can result this with a set of visual tools that they tender that allow you to result things devotion withhold your data behind your firewall, but result things devotion synchronize out for specimen to a Salesforce. You can copy records, but the workflows know what records are being copied and how they’re being moved and you can set audit checkpoints in there as you fade along that. You could sprint it over HTTP, HTTPS or even VPN tunnels for the levels of secure connectivity that you acquire when you talk to these external services, can breathe ratchet up depending on the sensitivity of the data, etc.
From a programming perspective, what they hope is that to you sum this looks devotion your network. In your program you can open a socket to a service that’s off-premise. But based on the infrastructure you have, the infrastructure knows that that zone is really an off-premises zone and we’ll ply it accordingly. Being able to manage your systems of record in a route that keeps you in control but allows to utilize services is a key aspect of hybrid computing.
We are seeing that customers are starting maybe in SMB land a runt bit more aggressively than imposing enterprise land, but I talk to customers more and more about how tempting what they convoke "internet outsourcing" is. Typically you are buying packaged applications and you are structure applications around SAP on-premise. You are structure applications around Oracle on-premise, IBM on-premise, but there are furthermore many other capabilities out there on the internet.
Being able to create these commerce mashups that utilize your core systems on-premise and services off-premise is very tempting, provided you believe the right tooling. Tooling devotion the Cast Iron capabilities serve you result that and build these applications in a very robust and accountable way.
11. Can you give us some examples of Hybrid Cloud deployments and what those leer devotion and why that would create sense to result hybrid versus sum public or sum private?
Let’s teach that you are working in an insurance company and let’s teach the insurance company focuses on ways to generate more revenue and they acquire this view for selling snowmobile insurance. They want to target the North-East of the US. To sprint a sales crusade typically would require you structure your application around your customer database. That may breathe running in some benign of on-premise ERP system.
I don’t know how many of you out there labor very closely with the folks managing your ERP systems, but if you want to result this opportunistically, devotion "Winter is coming up right now", your company is probably not agile enough to rotate that application around. They discern some people wanting to rotate to outside services, devotion "Let’s build the application around Salesforce." In this scenario, just for this snowmobile crusade they want to assemble leads using Salesforce. That’s good, but now again, as I imagine before, you believe 2 systems of record.
The new customer lead is going into Salesforce for your snowmobile insurance and then sum your other stuff on-premise. This is an specimen of "I’d worship to result it, Salesforce has a superior price, they are available quickly. I can acquire my mobile Salesforce up and running. structure the applications is predominantly template driven so I don’t believe to result a lot of profound application coding. A lot of it is templates and configuration against a imposing set of assets.
But then, how result I result this responsibly so that I don’t believe now 2 systems of record - one out on the Salesforce cloud and one perhaps on my SAP system. Now this is benign of where this hybrid application will approach in to play, where you can start to acquire alerts from Salesforce that trigger workflows that start doing things around data synchronization, synchronizing when a new customer gets inserted into your Salesforce system.
That triggers an event that will believe the customer information copied back into your system of record, thereby allowing you to result this responsibly, silent taking handicap of this sales opening or not troubling your internal apps team to believe to create a new application out of corps against their current system of record. This is just an specimen of internet outsourcing for an opportunity. It may breathe a temporal opportunity, because you are not going to breathe selling the snowmobile insurance in the summer, doing it in a accountable route through synchronization and then events, process through the system.
(Again, I’m outlining how their Cast Iron system works.) In the end, having control points so that you can monitor the activity that’s happening between your public activity and your on-premise activity.
12. What about portability of application code in this environment? Is it distinguished for someone to breathe able to deploy an app in a private and then possibly moving it out to a public? How does that work?
Portability is key. It goes back to some of the standard discussions that they had earlier. Model portability is important. There are some things when you leer at the portability of today’s on-premise applications, because many times an on-premise application will create bold assumptions about how condition is managed, how data is accessed that may obviate the application from easily scaling in generic ways. This is why sometimes you’ll discern in a Cloud or a Platform-as-a-Service runtime APIs are restricted and constrained in inevitable ways, which gives the underpinnings the capacity to scale it out.
Regardless, from an IBM perspective they want to give you the portability of your existing apps running in these hosted environments. But they furthermore want to start introducing APIs whether it’s through shared services devotion database services, cache services to allow the underpinnings to easily manage scale, while providing portability, whether it’s portability between running this in the IBM cloud and deciding you want to bring it on-premise to test it and perhaps sprint it in production. Or vice versa, starting with an on-premise application and then saw "You know, there is no true value for me to sprint this on-premise. Let me slither it off to an off-premise."
Portability of APIs is paramount. The one who is going to really consume leadership in this space is the company that’s going to serve drive the standards for portability. Not just the API flat portability, but furthermore the interfacing to the underpinning infrastructure and the portability around there and to believe a set of engrossing offerings with payment options and models. That will allow you today to sprint on-premise, tomorrow outsource that to an off-premise provider.
14. Where is the tipping point where Cloud Computing becomes more expensive than maintaining your own datacenter?
I reflect they too, in IBM software group (if you’ve seen recently their acquisitions of CoreMatrix and of Sterling Commerce), are very much in that boat. I really cherish that question because they result operate their own data centers to power the capabilities that those companies provide and that they provide in IBM. I reflect the characteristics of those companies watch to breathe more focused around a smaller set of applications that believe ponderous demand. Whether it’s CoreMatrix or Twitter or Facebook, you discern that characteristic.
There is not a lot of application variability, but there is tall demand and tall scale. Often, we’ll discern that the company who builds that application truly understands the principles of how multi-tendency is going to work, how elasticity is going to labor and could tune it to the n- degree because they own the application, versus the other side, which is I believe a big number of applications. Now I’m tuning for some flat of just behavior and it’s really the law of big numbers.
I’m making a stake that not every separate application running on my platform or in my hosted environment is going to breathe inflamed sum at once. I’m making that based on averages that some apps will breathe hot, some apps won’t breathe hot. I can trade off the resource underpinnings for that. I’ll start to optimize the behavior of my Cloud for that. If you are more to determine it’s an app, it’s a modest amount of volume, maybe a generic Cloud can ply your QoS responsibilities, your scale, and your multi-tendency requirements.
But if you believe a specialized app that is in tall demand, you may believe to acquire in there and tailor the underpinnings for multi-tendency, for elasticity, for QoS and for other dimensions as well - security, etc., it keeps going on. The Cloud isn’t for everyone. There are specialized Clouds for inevitable types of applications.
15. Will your Public Cloud plans, will you breathe serving IBM shops or are you going to breathe trying to recapture the Java community’s?
Clearly, as you set it. They believe a very tenacious focus on their current customer foundation and certainly learning while they labor with them is distinguished to their overall Cloud offerings and strategy. But through some organic growth but furthermore through some acquisitions we’ve been growing through the exercise of Public Clouds to gain out to folks that they really haven’t been capturing their hearts and minds. The two areas, specifically that I can give examples are the labor that we’re doing by bringing on Cast Iron.
Typically, Cast Iron has on-premise offerings that resonate of course with the habitual cast of characters that they labor with, but they furthermore believe a route to host in a third party IBM hosted environment integrations between on-premise and off-premise or off-premise and off-premise to allow you to build composite applications. We’re really cutting their teeth on some of that with and through Cast Iron offerings. Also, through their acquisition of Lombardi, they believe a set of Cloud-based offering now that’ll provide commerce analysts and commerce leaders with a set of tools.
And offering it not through traditional software, but Cloud-based hosted tools and hosted offerings. That’s getting a lot of traction with a set of customers that we’re increasingly trying to win over; in this case not necessarily the IT specific customers, but the commerce leaders. As they expand their Cloud offerings, certainly looking out not just to acquire the attention of the people they currently believe the attention of, but acquire the attention of others, and not just others in the standard geographies. I carry weight they furthermore hope that some of these Cloud offerings will serve us acquire the attention of others in other geographies in the emerging markets, etc.
We believe some labor going on. For specimen in China they believe a commerce Cloud with other sorts of offerings devotion that that is helping us establish ourselves in some of these new areas as they determine whether they want to create that a worldwide offering. From a deployment model’s perspective the Cloud, especially if they leer at the Public Cloud, helps us at IBM acquire their arms around some of these opportunities. We’ll always cater to the Enterprise, but I reflect they believe lots of opportunities to cater to many other folks across industry.
The commercial software market in the human resource management space is rather fragmented, with Talent, HR, and Workforce Management startups sum vying for a slice of the pie. It’s runt sensation the open source world hasn’t institute much direction either, with the most ambitious HRM solutions often locked inside larger ERP distributions. OrangeHRM is a standout.
OrangeHRM tackles employee administration from recruitment and applicant tracking to performance reviews, with superior audit trails throughout. An employee portal provides self-serve access to personal employment information, time cards, leave requests, and personnel documents, helping reduce demands on HR staff.
OrangeHRM doesn’t yet address niche aspects devotion talent management (social media, collaboration, lore banks), but it’s remarkably full-featured. Professional and Enterprise options tender more advanced functionality (in areas such as recruitment, training, on/off-boarding, document management, and mobile device access), while community modules are available for the likes of dynamic Directory/LDAP integration, advanced reporting, and even insurance profit management.
