gadget i retail outlets worried in Java-based net portals can besides exist interested to hear in regards to the latest unencumber of IBM‘s WebSphere Portlet factory. large Blue says the newest release, edition 6.1.2, brings enhancements if you want to permit builders to Get web 2.0 applications up and running quicker than before.

WebSphere Portlet manufacturing unit is a home windows-based mostly device designed to simplify the building of J2EE portlet purposes and Get rid of the necessity for direct coding. The utility runs on suitable of WebSphere utility Server versions 6 or 7, and helps every bit of predominant operating systems–including i5/OS and IBM i OS.

With version 6.1.2, IBM has delivered a couple of enhancements that it says speeds building and renovation of portals, which is at every bit of times a priority. a benevolent of points is the potential to unexpectedly “re-manufacturer” a whole net portal with a centralized theme from one area.

crew construction has besides been greater due to new versioning capabilities and greater superior potential to identify and add information to supply manage repositories.

This unencumber besides introduces a library of pre-built connectors for exposing Representational status transfer (relaxation) features from again-end methods. this may get it more straightforward to assemble functions from reusable chunks of features–a key element of provider oriented structure (SOA).

IBM Watson content material Hub has complications before you even delivery | real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Now that IBM has bought its Portal, Commerce, Notes and Domino on-premises choices to HCL Industries, it seems that large Blue is pushing its chips into the core of the desk on IBM Watson and the cloud. some of the tackle below the Watson umbrella that continues to garner attention in internet content material administration (WCM) circles is IBM Watson content Hub, so I decided to provide it a proceed and spot what every bit of the fuss was about.

My first mistake was to google IBM Watson and register for a free ordeal on the page. My registration gave me entry to every bit of styles of Watson-branded tools, together with Watson Language Translator, Watson Assistant, the Watson IoT platform and the Watson Voice Agent.

however, the one product that didn't believe access with a free ordeal on IBM Watson was IBM Watson content Hub. After wasting about 10 to quarter-hour in the IBM Cloud rabbit gap, i spotted that the IBM Watson content Hub device wasn't anywhere to exist discovered after I signed up for IBM Watson.

Watson offerings IBM is branding every diminutive thing that strikes with the identify Watson. So, now what?

I headed returned to Google and notably searched the IBM Watson content Hub term. This generated an enchanting influence. Google supplied a few hyperlinks, the first of which requested me to proceed to IBM Watson Latvia, the 2d requested me to proceed to IBM Watson Czech Republic. i used to exist in fact looking from Toronto, so I create this rather puzzling. much more baffling turned into that the provided URLs contained my language and country code, en-ca, inside them. despite the entire quiz-demonstrate-profitable acumen Watson possesses, IBM's flagship AI device appears to feel that Latvia is a Part of English-speakme Canada.

How on this planet may an IBM-generated URL with embedded en-ca bow verbiage about countries in japanese Europe? It would not get any experience.

neatly, I should soundless assure that it would not get feel until you believe got ever tried to internationalize a site with IBM WebSphere Portal or IBM's Digital event manager. these tackle don't get I18N an smooth assignment. Seeing IBM's net content material management tools generate non-English-Canadian content for English Canadian websites tells me that no longer even IBM's personal WCM specialists understand the route to exhaust these IBM tackle easily.

IBM Watson SEO Problems Why is IBM Watson including Latvia and Czech Republic in a obviously English Canadian request?

in any case, I clicked on the IBM Watson Latvia hyperlink, which took me to IBM Watson Canada. From there i attempted to register for a free trial. I assure tried, because it took me a couple of attempts. You see, the registration required a password of eight characters, one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and at least one quantity. I submitted the registration contour using 18Indian as the password. that is two numbers, one uppercase letter and eight characters in complete. however, IBM's Jeopardy-successful AI know-how blocked my registration.

i spotted the password container became punitively highlighted purple, and the word susceptible adjoined it. i would met every bit of of the cited password requirements, but the benevolent nonetheless blocked me.

Registration password Watson registration password province has a secret, undocumented requirement. can you spot it?

I added a ninth letter, but the device didn't fancy 18Indians both. It appeared to me just fancy the entire registration benevolent turned into damaged. As i was about search for AWS content Hub, I decided to fling a tenth letter into the combine, and miraculously, i used to exist allowed to register.

however I ought to say, every bit of of these system defects and problems had been basically beginning to acidulous me, and that i'd barely made it past the registration wall. IBM has branded so many products with the Watson name that I locate it overwhelming and puzzling. additionally, regardless of IBM's twenty years within the WCM video game, it nonetheless can't seem to finish I18N and search engine marketing competently. and at last, on whatever so simple as person registration, the industry managed to bow anything so puzzling and non-intuitive that it essentially drove me, a pro veteran of the IT field, to a competitor.

IBM seems to exist having a ante the farm on Watson and the cloud. but if this showcase of ineptitude is the foremost its AI product can do, purchasers will are looking to source their WCM tools from a unique pasture. most likely IBM can finish stronger.

Lotus on IBM i: A Chat with Some Users | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

In the highly amplified world of information technology, the chatter about what’s next almost always drowns out the talk about what the majority of companies are capable of doing to abet their businesses today. Innovation makes the news, but in the real world innovation isn’t the extreme sport that it’s often portrayed. real innovation is results oriented. If you want to know the reality of IT departments running Lotus software on the IBM i platform, talk with some mediocre companies.

There’s a powerful deal of innovation going on if you are willing to attach innovation in perspective with where a given company has been and where it is going. Being evolutionary has always been more common than being revolutionary. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, there are many trustworthy reasons for it. maintain in intelligence that in some instances, the pace of evolution is quite brisk. Other times, it’s excruciatingly slow.

Whatever your preconceived notions are about companies that flee Lotus Domino on the IBM i platform, let these four examples either reinforce your thinking or open your eyes to what life is fancy in this environment.

Gabriele Spaszewski — Dachser GmbH & Co. KG

Dachser is one of Europe’s leading logistics companies. For years it has flee its industry on IBM AS/400s, iSeries, System i, and now Power Systems with IBM i. And for as long as there has been Lotus Notes and Domino, Dachser has depended on that combination of servers and software to exploit workflow and a substantial load of industry communications with abysmal integration to its home-grown transport management software. It’s had opportunities to migrate from these systems, but has chosen not to.

There’s a sturdy connection between the IBM i platform and Lotus software users, but it’s a difficult one to apportion any numbers. I know for a fact it’s arduous to find an IBMer who will quantify this connection. That’s just the route it goes in the IBM i server industry these days. But coming out of the annual Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida, three weeks ago, with its accent on Lotus as the leading edge of gregarious business, I looked for some customers who would expose me what they were up to.

Dachser has a centralized Lotus environment on IBM i. It besides has an experienced, well-educated staff to get it labor well and the willingness to innovate.

The main mail server, a Power6-based Power 570, hosts 11,300 registered users in 240 branches and includes mail files in 11 languages. That equates to approximately 400,000 emails routed per day with an mediocre mail delivery time of less than 1 second.

Those 11,000-plus users are in the processing of stirring from Lotus Notes 7.0.1 on Citrix Presentation Server 4 to Notes 8.5.1 on XenApp 5. And soon after, there’s a route to upgrade the servers to 8.5.2. The Notes database houses more than 200 document libraries and more than 100 in-house developed Lotus Notes applications that range from a simple dictionary to a tangled CRM system that is accessed by near to 1,000 employees each day.

Three additional IBM i servers are set up for specific duties: one for Lotus Sametime integrated chat, one for a third-party content management system, and one for a portion of the CRM system.

Apart from the in-house developed apps, third-party products are used for group calendaring, fax software, and data transfer and synchronization between Lotus Domino and supported external systems.

The only pieces that don’t flee on IBM i are the servers accessed by BlackBerry mobile users, which IBM did not design to flee on IBM i.

“We are lucky that they believe a lot of iSeries know-how in their company,” says Gabriele Spaszewski, team leader of Lotus Notes administration at Dachser in an email from Lotusphere. “They really know their job and they abet us tailoring the OS so that it fits their needs. This is absolutely necessary if you route to flee Domino on iSeries, because unfortunately there aren’t a lot of people around knowing how to exploit Domino on iSeries–you believe a arduous time finding some experts.”

Bob Laing — Independent Contractor

As an independent contractor in western New York, Bob Laing works with more than a dozen IBM i shops that flee Domino and a few that flee Domino on Windows. His view is a microcosm of the Domino on IBM i landscape. His clients are primarily manufacturers, but with a couple of insurance companies besides in the mix. Most believe an IBM i history that includes the iSeries, the AS/400, and the System/36 and System/38 eras.

The IT shops Laing supports vary in size from 10 users up to 500 users. He is the IT staff at wee shops, while the larger companies believe IT staffs in the range of 15 to 20 people, where his Domino expertise and IBM software/hardware skills (hardware installations, OS upgrades, PTF installations, and performance tuning) supplements the full-time personnel.

Most of his customers are current on OS and software upgrades, but are operating at a fairly basic feature/function level with diminutive custom tweaking and performance tuning. They’ve been running this route for years, preferring the stability and the manageability that Domino on IBM i offers to the hoopla of gregarious industry and cloud computing, which are diminutive more than curiosities at this point.

“I just went through a project where three Windows servers were consolidated to an existing iSeries,” Laing says. “The only required tuning involved the overnight backups. Domino runs powerful on iSeries and the box manages the recollection it uses, the disk space it uses, and it can exist tweaked–but I believe never seen that done locally. I’ve often seen shops consolidating from multiple iSeries to one iSeries because you no longer necessity multiple machines to Get the needed level of performance.”

“Leveraging the gregarious aspects of the Lotus software line is not a towering priority. Most shops are doing traditional email and traditional client-based applications. I’d assure less than 25 percent of the shops are just now getting into Web-enabling their 10-to-15-year-old Notes applications.”

In his slice of the customer base, he sees a handful using HA solutions and Domino clustering and several are looking into making exhaust of mobile applications. The obstacle, on more than one occasion, has been mobile apps required to flee on Windows servers. These are shops that are leery of bringing in more Windows servers. The preferred workaround, for now, is using mail forwarding to Get information to smartphones.

There is a parallel to traditional email and traditional client-based applications. It is traditional skills.

“I view a skills vacuum for people who possess both legacy skills and modern skills,” Laing says. “There are a lot of RPG programmers with skills that should exist updated, but for various reasons they aren’t going to learn modern techniques. The same can exist said for a lot of Domino developers. They believe been doing the same thing for 10 years, and as technology evolves, they don’t evolve as well.”

Regardless, Laing says, “In my neck of the woods there is a healthy install of Domino on iSeries. I don’t anticipate it changing by more shops migrating to the iSeries or migrating away from the iSeries.”

Rick Davis — Frisbie Memorial Hospital

In March 2001, a sole Domino R5 server was deployed at this Rochester, New Hampshire, hospital. There were 51 registered users. By the time Rick Davis joined the IT staff in 2008, the user list had expanded to approximately 500, with about 350 of those using the Notes client and 150 using the browser-based iNotes. The number of users continued to grow, and today there are 258 iNotes users and 383 using the Notes client. The server is running Domino 8.5.1 and there’s an upgrade to 8.5.1 in progress for the clients. There are plans to roll out Lotus Traveler (for mobile apps) in the near future and the exhaust of Sametime (instant messaging, voice over IP, and audio-video conferencing) is in the “under consideration” phase.

Davis is a one-man IT staff. He handles administration duties and some evolution chores. On some platforms it would exist ridiculous to reflect it could exist a one-person job. Davis does Get some assistance.

He says contracting with a Domino hosting service has been a powerful abet to the hospital, which was searching for a route to securely deliver information to providers “outside the network.” The hosting service was the key to secure information replication.

At the same time, the hospital has increased the number of Notes applications that electronically track and document many processes that were previously paper-based. Those applications comprise coverage calendars, variance reporting, HIPAA violation tracking, key and badge requests, surveys, change requests, network management and many more. Davis points out that the managers now believe accurate data for planning and evaluation purposes.

A towering availability system is besides under way. It includes a second iSeries box and a second Domino server clustered with the existing production server. Fail over testing has been scheduled so upgrades of the OS, processors, and recollection in the current production server can exist accomplished while maintaining industry continuity.

The only problem region that Davis revealed was an ongoing issue with the client upgrade process.

“Over the years there has been no defined install process. Or perhaps there was, but it changed every six weeks,” he says. “We’re finding components in folders and places they never anticipated. This has required a bit more ‘hands-on’ than they would believe liked.”

Davis says the bond that connects Domino and the IBM i is very strong, but he stops short of epigram the two will remain forever linked.

“Both Domino and most of the non-Domino medical applications flee on the iSeries,” Davis says. “As they continue to grow and stress the capacity of the iSeries, the option to trot Domino to another platform will always exist under consideration. But for the foreseeable future, Domino will remain on the iSeries and the iSeries will remain the production server platform.”

Eric A. Jewett — McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital

In most cases where IBM i is the operating system of selection for Domino, core industry applications are running on that platform. It began that route at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio, but the facility is in the process of migrating its main hospital system to Linux. In the short term, that will believe no repercussion on a decision to trot Domino off the IBM i platform.

Because the hospital makes exhaust of a multi-partitioned box, it has realized many advantages–specifically, part partitions for email, WebSphere Portal, and a test environment for both WebSphere and Domino.

“We went from two Windows servers to a multiple LPAR for Domino,” Jewett says. “And at that same time, they moved to Domino 6.5.”

That was a bit of a uneven road–the Domino upgrades of that era were notoriously ugly–and it required some abet from a industry ally to smooth the transition. But as Jewett says, “Once they got through that, they never looked back. They now believe Sametime and Quikr running on the iSeries, and another application server as well. The only Intel Domino server in this merge is for BlackBerry (only runs on Windows). Given the choice, they probably would exist running that on iSeries, too.”

In the LPAR environment, Jewett can flee multiple releases of Domino, which is handy for testing new applications. The test environments comprise pretty much everything that’s in the production environment. And it allows regression testing while making Domino upgrades.

“Currently they believe two different Domino releases,” Jewett says. But there believe been times–because of add-in packages and questions of compatibility–we’ve had three releases running at one time.”

The hospital is up to date with Domino 8.5.2 for everything that’s capable of running on it.

The majority of users–the line of industry staffers–have access to browser-based applications. Jewett says, “A lot of newer and more sophisticated apps believe been built for browsers, but the supervisory staff soundless relies primarily on applications running on the Notes client especially when accessing older departmental databases. Some composites application evolution is besides in the mix.

Jewett describes his job as being mostly focused on the admin side of things. His affinity for the platform is clear.

“The fact that Domino on the i has been tremendously stable has been a powerful benefit. Once it is up and running, it stays running and they believe very few issues,” he says. Although he claims his evolution skills are a bit stale, he wants to tackle the modernization of some of the client-based apps.

“It’s not been a towering priority to this point because of limited time,” is the chummy abstain Jewett evokes. “The top of the priority list is generally taking dependence of things that are broken as is the case when dealing with older applications. There are things that we’d fancy to trot over to the browser and prefer handicap of new features. The time to labor on those projects isn’t there privilege now.”

The lease on the hospital’s current iSeries will soon expire. Jewett says there’s no consideration given to leaving the platform.

“We will exist scaling down their hardware buy because there’s a terabyte of disk space or more that is tied up in the hospital system, which is no longer needed on the i. But the platform has been very stable and the licensing model is not conducive to switching to individual Linux or Windows servers. Besides, managing that workload [on the Linux or Windows side] would not exist something that I could add to my duties.”

Go In-Depth With LDAP and Novell's eDirectory | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

EUC with HCI: Why It Matters

You are liable for managing 15,000 user accounts and 20,000 computers in your company. It is 9 a.m. on Monday. finish you know where your users' computers are? If you are working for a typical company, almost certainly you finish not. "British Telecom recently audited their IT assets and create that they had 20,000 more computers than they thought," says Dave Bingham, Consulting Director, Fujitsu Consulting UK. Now that is a sober systems management problem!

Many companies are sinking under the weight of their existing legacy network identity, access control, and provisioning systems. Some of the warning signs that you might believe a problem:

  • Users cannot recall every bit of their passwords because each application requires its own authentication
  • Directory information is out of date, or incomplete
  • Ex-employees soundless believe access to local/remote network services
  • It takes on average, 22 steps to create a new employee e-mail address
  • Little or no auditing of accounts and privileges, including cross application comparisons to Get a suitable sense of user actions
  • Redundant administration points and no pre-established delegation policies
  • Proprietary access, authentication, and provisioning APIs for each application
  • As large and wee companies alike struggle to control IT assets and costs, global network identity management systems are looking increasingly attractive. The Forrester Group predicts most Fortune 100 companies will exist implementing these systems to reduce TCO (total cost of ownership), eliminate manual/legacy systems, and streamline industry processes.

What finish Novell, identity management and LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) believe to finish with any of this? Is this the same moribund company known for the develope NetWare, NDS (Novell Directory Service), and GroupWise product lines? Yes, a revitalized Novell is aggressively pursuing the network identity management and directory services market with a new generation of LDAP-based products and technologies. By building on Novell's traditional strengths in directory management and de-coupling these products from their flagship NDS NOS product, it is hoping to compete directly with iPlanet, Oblix, censorious Path, Microsoft, and other identity management vendors. The next few years will exist a battleground for network identity vendors and consultants as they struggle to establish themselves in this new marketplace. Let us prefer a more in depth glimpse at Novell's LDAP implementation and directory service products to view why you should exist seriously considering them if you necessity an enterprise scale LDAP system.

Why Novell and LDAP?Novell realized it needed an open measure for its front-end application software. LDAP was the obvious selection because Novell had historically based both the NetWare and NDS systems on the X.500 protocol and LDAP was originally designed as the X.500 front end. In March 1999, Novell released a copy of open source LDAP as Part of its SDK (software developer's kit) indicating its complete advocate for the LDAP standard. At the time Kurt Zeilenga, chief architect of the OpenLDAP Project, noted, "Global adoption of technologies requires that developers believe access to open and reusable code. They are pleased that Novell has chosen to exhaust OpenLDAP software and has made its changes available to the community so every bit of may benefit. They glimpse forward to working with Novell in furthering open source LDAP software." It clearly had the complete advocate of the developer community.

Although LDAP has been around as a measure protocol since 1995 until recently it has been a strictly back-office enterprise network service. Previously, the only open measure for directories was X.500, introduced in 1988. Since X.500 was OSI model based, LDAP was designed to serve as a translation protocol between the TCP/IP and OSI models. Because it is the most open and springy of every bit of the network services protocols, the network ID management community has embraced it as the core technology to connect user and machine identity information together into one seamless whole. It is now the de facto measure for most major identity management services applications. Openwave and iPlanet both exhaust LDAP as the underlying address directory technology for enterprise e-mail services products. LDAP is an established, robust, scalable open directory measure -- an extremely attractive solution.

Novell NDS and LDAPHow has that changed Novell's products? First, let us glimpse at the details of how the NDS system has fully incorporated LDAP. NDS 8 provides robust LDAP advocate by allowing access directly to a NDS data store. This affords the best of both worlds -- open standards for directory access while leveraging Novell's security strengths such as sturdy authentication and server-server replication. This enhanced advocate includes:

  • LDAP Services are installed by default, which means that LDAP clients can transparently access NDS objects using SSL without requiring any additional client software.
  • Ability to write directly to LDAP schema. To change an LDAP-NDS mapping, proceed to the ConsoleOne (Novell's Java-based server/workstation management software) screen and select LDAP Group Object. privilege click this remonstrate and select Properties. You can then proceed to the refer map or Class Map tab to add/modify/delete the usurp object.
  • Full auxiliary class support, which means if an NDS or LDAP remonstrate is a member of multiple remonstrate classes, it inherits the attributes of every bit of these remonstrate classes. Note there are three default auxiliary classes in NDS.
  • eDirectory - Novell's Directory Service ProducteDirectory, which evolved from NDS, is a directory service that is scalable, extensible, and towering performance. In fact, Novell has publicly demonstrated that eDirectory can manage more than a billion objects in a sole tree. This capability far exceeds what most enterprise networks or e-businesses will ever require. Some of eDirectory's major components fancy global printing services are incorporated into NetWare 6.

FeaturesSome of eDirectory's new or enhanced features included in version 8.7 - codenamed "Falcon" are:

  • Full advocate on multiple platforms, Netware, Windows NT/2000, and UNIX flavors (Linux, AIX, and Solaris). This is powerful word for multi-platform enterprises.
  • eDirectory has complete advocate for replication (multiple distributed copies of the directory in case of failover) and portioning (splitting directory logically to advocate decentralized administration and improved network performance). This is especially censorious in a 7x24, five 9s, mission censorious deployments.
  • Full advocate of LDAP over SSL/TLS (Secure Socket Layer & Transport Layer Security protocols). This feature is very considerable in the web-based services arena.
  • Supports SNMP monitoring. Both directory monitoring and management consoles are available. ConsoleOne is a Java-based for servers/workstations, and iMonitor is a web-based monitoring and diagnostics for every bit of company eDirectories.
  • IManager is a web-based directory manager that performs operations on directory objects, including access, creation, directory portioning, and replication.
  • It includes an import/export utility using LDAP Directory Interchange Format (LDIF) for simplified ports and integration with legacy systems. It can exist executed from either the command line or the ConsoleOne or iManager products.
  • Directory StructureHere is a brief overview of the Novell directory structure from top to bottom. Novell calls its directories "container objects."

  • TREE (once called [ROOT]) is the top of the directory hierarchy and contains every bit of objects in the directory. Primarily used to award or disaffirm global rights.
  • ORGANIZATION contains every bit of objects for an organization or enterprise. This includes the Administrator user. A COUNTRY remonstrate can besides exist created at this level for more refinement.
  • ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT (OU) - is a further subdivision of an organization structure (such as divisions, geographical, etc). Users are created at this level.
  • DOMAIN (DNS Domains) - allows eDirectory interaction with DNS for location of services.
  • DirXMLDir XML provides bi-directional and Meta-directory capabilities between e-Directory and other enterprise and legacy systems. The systems communicate by directly processing XML documents. DirXML runs on a variety of platforms -- Linux, NetWare, Solaris, and Windows NT/2000, but requires eDirectory 8.5 or later. Currently available DirXML drivers include:

  • LDAP Directories - IPlanet/Netscape Directory Server, censorious Path InJoin Directory, IBM SecureWay
  • Electronic Messaging - Groupwise, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange
  • Enterprise Applications - Peoplesoft, IBM WebSphere MQ, Oracle, IBM DB2, and Sybase
  • Operating System Domains - NT, active Directory, NIS
  • Delimited Text - Miscellaneous
  • DirXML ComponentsBetween eDirectory/DirXML there are two different types of data flows.

  • Publisher Channel - Sends data from various systems to eDirectory.
  • Subscriber Channel.- Sends data from eDirectory to various systems.
  • DirXML Driver - Handles the communication between DirXML engine and the application but not the rule processing. This includes receiving the XML document and translating it into a set of commands, which are then sent to the usurp data store. Note that DirXML 1.1 no longer requires eDirectory and DirXML running on the server allowing remote drivers to exist dynamically loaded.
  • DirXML Engine - Translates directory events such as add, modify, or delete to an XML document. Translation involves processing various filters, rules, and style sheets to achieve the desired result.
  • Objects - eDirectory operations involve inescapable key objects, DirXML-DriverSet, DirXML-Driver, DirXML-Publisher, and DirXML-Subscriber.
  • Filters -- determine which attributes such as name or address will exist affected for this particular channel session.
  • Rules Sets
  • Object mapping -- Associates an remonstrate in the eDirectory schema with an remonstrate in the external application.
  • Matching -- Determines the attributes and values in eDirectory and the corresponding application that must match before creating an association attribute.
  • Create remonstrate -- Specifies the refer and values that must exist in space before a new remonstrate or record is created.
  • Placement -- Specifies the location in the application the objects are stored. Multiple rules are typically used.
  • XSLT Style sheets - Define the XLST transformation rules that transforms commands or directory events create in the XML documents.
  • Developer ServicesAdditional services and products Novell offers specifically designed to aid developers include:

  • Customized DirXML Drivers -- Written in either C++ or Java. The Java drivers requires JDK 1.1.7b or later. Developers can exhaust DSTrace facility and DirXML trace log for debugging.
  • XML Interfaces for C++ - Allows the developer to write messages to DSTrace facility and DirXML trace log.
  • LDAP Extensions and Control for JNDI (Java Naming and Directory Interface).
  • Test Server for LDAP
  • eDirectory Class Libraries for C and Java - Used to execute operations such as query or add on a LDAP directory. Part of the Novell Developer Kit (NDK), it uses open source code from the OpenLDAP Project.
  • Some CautionsNovell is stirring the privilege direction by porting the package to multiple platforms, but if you really want to believe a fully integrated system, you should soundless exist using the other Novell products in conjunction with eDirectory. Although eDirectory has some powerful features that get it easier to develop enterprise scaled directory services based applications, it is soundless at heart an NDS based product. It will probably labor best for you if you already believe a NetWare installation and some familiarity with the Novell approach to network based enterprise services. Tony Neal, IT manager at Marriott International Inc. views Novell LDAP advocate as "another piece of the protocol puzzle that will tie everything together, with NDS as the real engine underneath". It is not clear when talking to Novell how many of their eDirectory installations are truly new customers and not just additional sales to the existing Novell customer base.

A few years back Novell took a sober misstep when they proposed a new top-level .dir domain for the Internet. The proposed .dir domain was a so-called chartered domain and would believe required .dir applicants to exist fully compliant with LDAP 2000, an LDAP conformance test sponsored by DIF. Novell claimed that establishing the .dir domain was censorious because it would guarantee the type of sites that would exhaust it. The proposed domain immediately met with community resistance and was quickly withdrawn. "Why is everyone looking to ICANN to rubber-stamp their industry models?" said Rick Wesson, CEO of Alice's Registry, in Santa Cruz, Calif., a consultancy for ICANN-accredited registrars. "Novell wants to create a LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) root, but it doesn't necessity a TLD to finish that. It can build the same infrastructure under the existing DNS domains."

Is Novell sober about LDAP?Novell has been active with two emerging IETF standards groups. These efforts will no doubt halt up in future Novell web, operating system, and directory products.

  • SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) 1.0 allows applications to participate authentication information. In July, Novell participated in a SAML Interoperability forum as Part of the Burton Group. However, the sole sign-on solution remains a work-in-progress.
  • The same group OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) that oversees SAML besides is creating the UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery and Integration) specification. UDDI includes a protocol for describing web services and queries about businesses/products. Novell sponsored engineers authored a draft schema to space UDDI information in an LDAP directory.
  • Liberty Alliance is creating a "federated" identity authentication protocol, called "a clique of trust", that allows users to transparently navigate between affiliated organizations. There are various security access issues soundless to exist determined before this becomes reality. It is not clear what handicap this schema has over existing certification systems, fancy PKI.
  • Novell developers are working on the next release of Netware code named "Nakoma." It will comprise enhanced DirXML advocate for tighter integration between NetWare, Novell Portal Services, and legacy corporate directories that require directory-based identity and access services. Current projected availability is summer 2003.

Some enhancements that are Part of "Project Destiny" the overall Novell eDirectory and directory enhancement effort include:

  • UDDI server due by year-end.
  • The future version of eDirectory will exist more dynamic with enhanced rules-based "decision-making" about people, and directory data.
  • "Saturn" is a Novell effort to get eDirectory and iChain (identity-driven web access) compatible with the Liberty Alliance specification. "Saturn" reportedly will exist completed by year-end.
  • Dynamic Identity services and access will exist granted based on the application.
  • In conclusion, Novell has been working arduous to position itself in the forefront of the LDAP evolution community. Novell has leveraged its expertise with X.500 and NDS to create a powerful set of tools using LDAP and the NDS architecture. If you are sober about large-scale identity management applications and you already believe some familiarity with the Novell environment, eDirectory might exist just the toolkit you necessity to build your application.
