These enhancements consist of IBM FlashCopy SE -- a brand unusual licensed office that allows purchasers to perform an region productive photograph reproduction of their information. records copies are a vital Part of records protection and trying out options. IBM Raises The Bar For Storage, once more | killexams.com actual Questions and Pass4sure dumps

The huge word within the expertise world this previous week became IBM service provider’s purchase of red Hat in one of the largest software company acquisitions in heritage. while it really is a basis-shaking stream for both IBM and crimson Hat, it is going to now not possess an repercussion on the day-to-day lives of most working IT experts.

IT specialists focus on providing normally reputable and first-class service to their consumers.  while the purple Hat integration will occupy a long time to submit up to date product and technologies roadmaps for the unusual mixed business, IBM’s fresh plethora of storage bulletins is an abominable lot more essential when brooding about your IT company’s wants.

i dote protecting IBM's storage bulletins. The storage neighborhood, whereas sitting within an unquestionable behemoth of a expertise business, strikes with the pace and agility of a plenty smaller organization. it's an organization that has palpable energy inside it.

This agility and tempo has allowed the IBM storage crew to deliver a cadence of stunning unusual technology and product announcements. What I locate captivating about this crew is its steadfast alignment against a compelling vision of how commercial enterprise records should live managed.

IBM’s storage Story focuses on how facts is generated, managed, and consumed inside an business. it is that understanding that generates a group of technologies that may furthermore live leveraged to convey a cohesive answer to any IT company.

Would you possess guessed that IBM now has the broadest portfolio of NVMe and NVMe-over-material enabled products in the business? It shocked me. I wasn’t stunned to live taught that IBM is the region leader in tape archive solutions, seeing that I began in this industry by route of changing nine-music tapes for gasoline funds. IBM and tape are completely cemented in my intellect. at the equal time, a portfolio that reaches from arguably the fastest storage arrays in production to the lowliest tape pressure is quite a span.

All about utility

IBM has sum the time been about supplying cohesive application-first options to IT, which it intently couples with well-engineered hardware. This has been genuine on account that IBM delivered its first mainframe seventy years ago, carrying on with nowadays with its great purview of offerings in compute and storage that span on-premises and cloud architectures.

as it organizations stream from tape to cloud for information insurance blueprint and archival storage, and as statistics comes alive with the tower of AI-pushed analytics and part-pushed compute, managing that data becomes a logistical challenge. realizing the space records is, what it’s used for, and what the organization’s necessities are in keeping that data is what drives long-term know-how choices.

Managing the stream of a company’s facts, while delivering insights on the characteristics of that statistics, is what IBM’s Spectrum Storage suite is sum about. There are IBM Spectrum Storage products that control records in virtualized environments, provision storage into hybrid-cloud deployments, manipulate the complexities of information-insurance policy and backup, and that supply application-described storage options for file, block, and objects.

IBM's recent bulletins included a flurry of recent points across the Spectrum Storage line, together with a brand unusual answer for SAP HANA installations that leverages IBM storage, IBM Spectrum protect, and IBM Spectrum reproduction. It’s a huge record, however two application-linked announcements dominated my attention.

IBM Storage Insights

IBM Storage Insights is a cloud-based administration device that leverages IBM AI technology to commemorate storage networking efficiency concerns and proactively generate guide circumstances to support IT before concerns gyrate into complications. This classification of skill is rolling out from vendors across the IT trade and is mercurial fitting desk stakes for promoting storage options into the enterprise.

i'm joyous to behold IBM unencumber this product. Given IBM's inheritance in simulated intelligence, combined with its half-century-lengthy institutional legacy in helping datacenter know-how, it might become something special.

Mapping unstructured information

Analytics-pushed workloads and edge computing both power unusual requirements for unstructured facts. expostulate storage is one of the quickest growing storage applied sciences in trade IT, with options from most top-tier storage companies, including IBM. The problem of unstructured statistics lies in the skill to live vigilant what the statistics is, the space it got here from, and what an IT group should accomplish with it.

IBM Spectrum discover is a unusual providing from IBM that goals to tame unstructured facts and supply insights into precisely what that records is. Spectrum find, which arose from know-how generated interior of IBM analysis, scans and creates metadata, developing catalogs for an unstructured statistics set. here's designed to give a roadmap to a company's facts. IBM Spectrum find will support statistics within IBM Cloud expostulate Storage and IBM Spectrum Scale programs and, most notably, is expected to guide Dell EMC Isilon sometime in 2019.

realizing unstructured data is a problem for businesses, one that becomes extra tricky every day. It’s furthermore not a straightforward issue to deploy balanced utility tools to resolve. It’s notable to behold IBM bring technology into this house. it is going to set the bar for others to observe.

performance and density

As excited as I score about software, it is just as acquiescent as the underlying hardware. IT buyers these days may quiet arbiter spoiled with the aid of the exceptional and breadth of options accessible to them. the upward push of solid-state storage, NVMe interconnects, and built-in server-category processing makes it a superb time to buy storage options.

IBM is increasing its portfolio of hardware choices and, at the equal time, turning into the technology provider with the broadest providing of NVMe and NVMe-over-material storage products. IBM focuses on efficiency with NVMe, and on storage density with its pleasing glisten packaging expertise.

The most dependable illustration of IBM’s heart of attention on density is the DS8880F, which nearly doubles its glisten potential to a whopping 737TB (compared to its age 368TB). on the identical time, the IBM FlashSystem 900 and 9100 products are doubling in capacity with unusual 18TB modules with a purpose to support as much as 44TB efficacious means. This unusual skill is up from 22TB provided by using the outdated technology module.

The up-to-date third-era Storwize V7000 features built-in NVMe and more than a few enlargement alternatives, whereas providing what IBM describes as a 2.7x boost in highest throughput for some workloads—all whereas being clustered with other V7000 arrays to serve a cluster-broad 32PB of ability.

IBM announced extra hardware points and tweaks throughout its storage line. try its website if you are looking to evanesce deep on the details.

Concluding strategies

in the fight for bragging rights, providers attach up "hero numbers" that exhibit that they've the area's quickest array. This 12 months that declare became credibly made with the aid of Dell EMC, pure Storage, and IBM. The verisimilitude is that most structures that are constructed on up to date-technology—leveraging NVMe interconnects both inside and outside of the box, and wearing official media—will sum meet most worrying storage wants.

past hardware bragging rights, IT groups should focus on the broader query of how these storage options are built-in into their mediocre IT architecture. utility is the glue that ties together storage hardware with cloud, hybrid-cloud, and different storage and compute fashions to provider the altering demands of facts inside the business.

IBM makes a speciality of providing a holistic answer to datacenters. Given the breadth and depth of its storage portfolio, its aiding utility suites, and its penetration into cloud, IBM is one to commemorate as companies’ bits and bytes are grew to become into actionable data.

Disclosure: My firm, Moor Insights & strategy, dote several analysis and analyst businesses, offers or has offered analysis, evaluation, advising, and/or consulting to many excessive-tech companies within the trade, including Dell EMC, red Hat, and IBM, which may well live cited listed here. I don't hang any fairness positions with any groups illustrious in this column.

IBM fills storage system gaps; HP to ship external 6 Gbps SAS array | killexams.com actual questions and Pass4sure dumps

Storage channel word roundup for July 9-15, 2009

IBM adds thin provisioning to DS8000, asynchronous mirroring to XIV Storage System

IBM tweaked its enterprise storage systems today, adding thin provisioning to its System Storage DS8000, and asynchronous mirroring and dual processors to its XIV Storage System. In both cases, the features are already included in competitors' systems and fill gaps in IBM's platforms.

IBM left out thin provisioning when it upgraded the DS8000 final February with full disk encryption and solid-state drive (SSD) support. First made favorite by 3PAR Inc., thin provisioning is becoming a common feature on enterprise systems now that Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) and EMC Corp. tender it. IBM already supports thin provisioning for its SAN Volume Controller (SVC) storage virtualization box, and on the XIV Storage System.

Along with thin provisioning, IBM is making software upgrades for the DS8000 that are intended to help the speed of volume initiation and provide better throughput for systems using FICON on IBM mainframes.

Hewlett-Packard launches first external 6 Gbps SAS enclosures

Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. will inaugurate updating its external disk arrays to 6 Gbps Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) with the unusual HP StorageWorks D2000 series this fall.

Hewlett-Packard has pledged to upgrade its entire storage line to 6 Gbps wee profile factor (2.5-inch) Serial-Attached SCSI drives, and many anticipate the all data storage industry to supervene by offering 6-gig SAS as an alternative to Fibre Channel (FC) in enterprise data storage systems.

The StorageWorks D2000 is an update to the low terminate of the HP Modular Smart Array (MSA) line. The D2600, a 2U enclosure with support for up to 12 great profile factor (3.5-inch) 450 GB 6 Gbps SAS and/or 1 TB 3 Gbps SATA drives, is an update to the 3 Gbps SAS and SATA MSA 60. The D2700, furthermore a 2U enclosure with support for up to 25 wee profile factor 300 GB 6 Gbps SAS and/or 500 GB 3 Gbps SATA, is an update to the MSA 70.

Barracuda Networks adds data deduplication with Yosemite integration

Barracuda Networks is adding data deduplication into its Barracuda Backup Service and the BarracudaWare Yosemite Server data backup product.

Barracuda's hurry into the red deduplication space is driven by acquisitions. Barracuda acquired dedupe IP when it bought BitLeap LLC final November, and the BarracudaWare Yosemite Server Backup comes from the acquisition of Yosemite Technologies in January. The unusual Yosemite product uses the BitLeap deduplication with Yosemite's application-aware backup software agents for granular backups of Microsoft Exchange, SQL and Windows system status information.

Managing snapshot data is a balancing act

Snapshots are a handy implement for storage managers, offering a spruce point-in-time recovery skill that users love. But they're so easy to perform that if they're not carefully managed, they can terminate up taking up too much space in storage managers' systems.

"I don't arbiter we're seeing enough discussion around image sprawl," said Andi Mann, Enterprise Management Associates VP of research, storage management. "We're starting to perceive snapshots and image sprawl as a major storage issue. The view that you can restore captious data, from a compliance perspective, it's overkill. You terminate up storing and restoring 10Gb even though you want to score at one file."

So how many snapshots should a storage manager save? "There's not any one rule for that," said Lauren Whitehouse, Enterprise Strategy Group analyst. "It's so environment-specific, use-case-specific, and it could even live compliance-specific."

DataCore splits cataclysm recovery load among remote sites with Advanced Site Recovery

DataCore Software Inc. rolled out unusual software at the Microsoft Worldwide confederate Conference that allows organizations without a secondary data heart devoted to cataclysm recovery (DR) to fail over physical and virtual servers to multiple remote or offshoot offices (ROBOs) in the event of a disaster.

The unusual software, called Advanced Site Recovery, or ASR, requires DataCore's SANmelody or SANsymphony storage virtualization software to live installed on sum storage nodes involved in the cataclysm recovery plan. The customer would furthermore install Advanced Site Recovery on each DataCore node and settle which remote sites should occupy over each workload in case of failure.

This requires particular planning and scholarship of the capacity available at each remote site, but DataCore director of product marketing Augie Gonzalez pointed out that the software will only live available through DataCore-certified Advanced Site Recovery implementation channel partners, who will assist with the planning and deployment of Advanced Site Recovery.

Disaster recovery testing strategies

At a time when businesses are more dependent than ever before on automation to enable fewer people to live more productive, cataclysm recovery (DR) planning is more well-known than ever. Even a minor disruption can possess major consequences for trade continuity.

That said, the verisimilitude is that many organizations possess downsized their planning efforts in response to economic pressures. One significant region where cutbacks are occurring is in the allocation of funds to subsidize blueprint testing.

Testing is the long tail cost of cataclysm recovery planning. Once the captious assets of the company possess been identified and objectives possess been set for their timely recovery following an interruption event, planners typically evanesce on a hunt for the privilege recovery technique to safeguard and restore the assets within the limitations imposed by technology availability and budget. Settling upon the techniques that appropriate the need, the blueprint is documented and bound and they score down to the actual toil of cataclysm recovery: routine testing.

Cloud data backup caution is advised by unusual CA recovery management head Don Kleinschnitz

Don Kleinschnitz became the senior vice president of engineering at CA Inc. final month, and has been charged with leading a unusual product development team overseeing strategy, design and launch of unusual data recovery management products.

Kleinschnitz previously held a product development position within CA compete Symantec Corp., and before that he held positions with StorageTek and Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. Kleinschnitz said CA is gung-ho about supporting server virtualization backups, having recently released day one support for VMware Inc.'s vSphere 4.

But when it comes to cloud data backup, another red technology topic, Kleinschnitz said he believes customers are looking for a gradual, lengthier transition than many of his competitors anticipate

Tarantool vs. Redis: In-Memory Databases countenance Off | killexams.com actual questions and Pass4sure dumps

Image title

With respect to in-memory databases, Redis improved upon Memcached with the abilities it introduced to persist cached data, to expend data types other than strings, and to perform complicated operations on data. [1]

Tarantool improves upon Redis by taking the operations that can live performed on data sets to a all unusual plane of sophistication—as well as surpassing Redis in terms of persistence and indexing, not to mention speed and support. [2] In fact, given the towering trait of Tarantool’s persistence processes, as well as its facility for transactions and great data sets, it can effectively live used as an application’s sole database—a masterstroke that is frankly not often accomplished with Redis. [3]

A chief limitation of Redis is that it can’t process a data set larger than the RAM of its server, as per the FAQ on its website: “...we are very joyful if they can accomplish one thing well: data served from memory, disk used for storage.” Tarantool offers a choice of storage engines: Memtx, which functions dote a traditional in-memory database, and furthermore Vinyl/Disk, which allows the expend of disk storage in conjunction with RAM. Vinyl provides the skill to toil with data sets that are 10 to 100 times the size of available RAM. [4] It is able to toil with these great sets because it is optimized for mercurial random writes, the main bottleneck that arises with this configuration.

Technically speaking, Vinyl implements a disk-access algorithm called log-structured merge tree, or LSM, instead of the more common B-tree. [5]

Redis and Tarantool can both live scripted using variants of Lua, thus allowing complicated functions to live performed on data sets. And in addition to this custom Lua scripting, both Redis and Tarantool can live augmented with inescapable packages from the LuaRocks ecosystem. However, privilege out of the box, Tarantool uses the faster LuaJIT as opposed to the vanilla Lua implementation of Redis. Not only that, but Tarantool runs a full, non-blocking Lua application server that has access to network and external services. Conversely, Redis’s Lua implementation is sandboxed and its scripts are blocking. [6] In other words, waiting for Lua processes to complete in Redis can antecedent performance issues that don’t exist at sum in Tarantool.

Of course, a comparison of Tarantool and Redis would live remiss without at least a brief mention of their relative throughput and latency numbers. Tests for them on a unique node, using the Yahoo! Cloud Server Benchmark’s (YCSB) six core workload types—“update heavy,” “read mostly,” “read only,” “read latest,” “short ranges,” and “read-modify-write”—show that Tarantool, with both Hash and Tree indices, respectively, has better throughput than Redis on sum workloads. Tarantool has lower latency with many workload types, and although they are nearly always close, Redis does possess lower latency with some. This includes workloads both with and without write-ahead logging, a persistence feature.

Tarantool’s ultimate handicap over Redis lies in the fact that in tandem with a database management system (DBMS), Tarantool runs a full application server. [7] This server, which can furthermore live flee alone, rolls out a all additional suite of technical tools that Redis just doesn’t possess at all. The “killer function” of Tarantool’s application server is its skill to toil in conjunction with, and thus accelerate, any number of slower, legacy databases—including Oracle, IBM DB2, MySQL, MS SQL Server, and PostgreSQL.

Tarantool orchestrates and virtualizes the data of its targets, enabling data to live accessed more rapidly. Adding Tarantool into the architecture of nearly any enterprise application and services lightens code bases for integration and scale, and furthermore reduces servers and hardware requirements. For example, one Tarantool server can replace potentially dozens of servers running a traditional DBMS—allowing you to rapidly scale your microservices and applications. [8]

Rob Pegoraro: Busy, industrious day here. I've got a full inbox of mail that piled up during my tiny sphere trip to the West Coast final week, and a full screen of questions about IMAP e-mail, Verizon Wireless EV-DO Internet access and the Mozilla Firefox Web browser. Let's score to it....

_______________________

Laurel, Md.: Hi Rob -

Anticipating the question of 'when and where can I score Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess (Ev-DO) service?' I tender the following:

Verizon Wireless is on target to expand their BroadbandAccess network to cover one-third of their network - approximately 75 million Americans - by the terminate of 2004. Today at CTIA they announced multi-million dollar agreements with Lucent and Nortel for wireless infrastructure technology for BroadbandAccess over the next two years.

BroadbandAccess will live available to trade and individual customers in many major U.S. cities later this year, with additional markets phased in through 2005.

We possess not yet announced any further deployment info.

Rob Pegoraro: I arbiter I know just who in Verizon Wireless PR sent this... the post helpfully addresses a topic that Verizon had yet to clarify when I wrote that column.

BTW, "CTIA" is a major wireless-telecom trade argue in Atlanta this week; behold for some coverage by the Post's Yuki Noguchi of developments at this gathering in the next few days.

Falls Church, Va.: towering speed woes over here. DSL isn't available. Cheapest seems to live Cox Cable at $55 bucks a month -- it's not really cheaper if you add their basic service. Satellite service seems to live higher. Is there any solution that can drop broadband down to $40, or accomplish I possess to wait until Verizon gets here with its service?

Rob Pegoraro: You should check around with the other DSL providers they list in their annual survey of Internet providers. I *hope* that some of them can hook you up. Because if they can't, that is a shameful indictment of the landline telecom business. Falls Church is a dense, close-in region that should possess had universal DSL access years ago, going by everything that I've heard from folks at landline telecom companies.

Chestertown, Md.: So, suppose I switch to Firefox 8.0. Since I'm now using Netscape 7.02 for both browsing and Email, would I continue to expend it just for email? Seems kinda silly to retain the great program on the computer just for email. Is there some route to trim away the unneeded Part of Netscape?

I accomplish recall that Mozilla was furthermore working on an email application as a companion to what is now Firefox, but I don't recall the name.

Is there some email program (not Microsoft) that I could expend and one to which I could easily transfer alot of mail settings, addresses and files emails?

Thanks

stugodwin-friend.ly.net

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, you could retain Netscape just as an e-mail client. There is a mail-only Mozilla program called Thunderbird as well; I've been using it for the past few months. It's showing some acquiescent progress of its own--but it's furthermore in a much rougher status than Firefox, at a 0.5 version instead of 0.8. You requisite to live prepared to accomplish a lot more debugging and tinkering to score it to toil right. (I've switched to it mainly because my toil accounts are sum IMAP, and T-bird does provide pretty acquiescent IMAP support.)

_______________________

Columbus, Ohio: No question, just a astronomical thank you for suggesting I try out Mozilla Firefox. It works well. I never experienced an pains to hack into my laptop (52.0 Kb dial-in) with MS Explorer but believe an ounce of protection, etc.

I esteem the support and ideas you offer. delight retain it up.

Rob Pegoraro: Thanks. I'll accomplish my best!

Washington, D.C. Asks About I-Tunes, Wintel: Rob -- my daughter wants to buy an iPod -actually, the pink mini]. I am a Mac guy since 1984 -128k ruled!;], but a cataclysm technically.

My daughter's mom has a two-yr.-old Dell running Windows 98 -not 98SE]. It has USB, but not USB 2. It has no Firewire. The Apple website offers a Belkin Firewire card for PC.

My questions:

(1) Is installing the card difficult for a goof dote me who knows nothing about the PC world, and (2) will iTunes/iPod toil in Windows 98, without upgrading to XP -one Apple Spec sheet said 98SE okay, another just listed 2000 or XP].

Thanks for any help!;

Rob Pegoraro: Installing the card may live tricky, and installing iTunes will live impossible--it's Win 2000/XP only. You might live able to expend a third-party iPod program dote ephPod or Xplay, but then you're getting deeper into the trade of tinkering.

Wait, how could a two-year-old Dell possess been shipped with Win 98 instead of XP? Something here doesn't perform sense.

_______________________

Yuma, Ariz.: Can you disclose me how to find out why Microsoft Internet EXplorer keeps blocking my submission of a credit card number on the ground that "THE CARD NUMBER IS INVALID"? Is there some route to over-ride this block?

Rob Pegoraro: Uh-oh. That's not a feature that exists at sum in IE by itself. If your credit card is not, in fact, invalid, you requisite to check--carefully and quickly--to perform positive you don't possess some spyware running on your computer.

(Can they score a link to my column on that, pls.?)

Another possibility: You've got some child-protection software that's been poorly configured and is coughing up incorrect/confusing error messages in an attempt to preclude what it thinks is a kid uploading mom and dad's credit-card number.

Any other guesses?

Madison, Wisc.: A tech. columnist on the Chicago Tribune gave counsel on how to expend the computer avoiding starting up sum the hidden startup programs that absorb so much memory . His counsel was to flee msconfig the rest of The counsel I lost. Any ideas on how to spotless out the clutter

Rob Pegoraro: "MSConfig"--a wee utility buried deep in the Start Menu, which is simplest to find by choosing "Run..." off the Start Menu and typing "msconfig"--lets you adjust a lot of hidden system parameters, including what runs at boot time. Click its "Startup" tab and you can cease inescapable programs from running then.

The astronomical problem, though, is that at least half of these apps will live identified only by eight-character filenames, which you'll possess to behold up via Google to score any clue as to what they do. It's now been almost 10 years since Win 95 supposedly banished DOS 8.3 filenames in favor of human-readable names; how much longer are they reputed to decipher the import of filenames dote "systray" or "rnaapp" or whatever?

Lititz, Pa.: Dear Rob: I may live changing my ISP and want to set my email up for IMAP. The ISP I am considering will accept Outlook Express and other programs. i am not set up for Outlook Express. What accomplish you insinuate I accomplish prior to switching ISP's? Should i metamorphose my current email to Outlook? I want a smooth transition so I can export my address book and email log. Thanks

Rob Pegoraro: Don't even quiz the ISP what mail programs they support; provided you're capable of typing in a server address into a preferences screen, the term "support" means *nothing" except "we provide specific setup counsel for this application."

The entire point of protocols dote POP and IMAP is that they allow a lot of different programs to interoperate. Unless you expend AOL or MSN or some other ISP that doesn't expend these standard protocols, don't ever let your ISP disclose you what mail program to use.

_______________________

Denver: How accomplish I expend or set up tab browsing in firefox?

Rob Pegoraro: Hit Ctrl-T to open a unusual tab, then drag a link onto that tab to view that page there. You can furthermore open links in unusual tabs by right-clicking and selecting "Open Link in unusual Tab," or--this is really neat--by selecting the link by pushing down on the scroll wheel of any mouse with a built-in wheel between the buttons.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: How did you find your smack with Verizon 1X service levels on the broadband cards ?

Rob Pegoraro: Much slower, of course--but quiet pretty usable for simpler tasks dote e-mail or reading mostly-text Web sites. I was pretty impressed to perceive that Verizon's network could hand off my connection from EV-DO to 1xRTT without a drop.

_______________________

Asheville, N.C.: Your column left out a problem with Firefox: It can't find the cookies placed on the HDD by IE that subscription sites possess planted so you don't possess to sort in your password or that identify you automatically. It can't find any of the other IE placed cookies of other sites, either. My start page from Excite isn't establish by Firefox, nor are any of my TV schedule pages from other websites. Bummer!

Also . . . When I power down my 390X IBM laptop, running 98SE, I score a window that says something is quiet running. How can I find out what it is? I can't defrag as that utility furthermore says that something is running, but neither window identifies the program.

Thanks for any support you may provide!

Tim

Rob Pegoraro: Correct, the 0.8 version of Firefox only imports IE bookmarks. However, a complete settings-import option has been added to the more recent "nightly builds," the daily updates that more adventuresome folks are welcome to try. (I'm holding off on that myself; having made the switch from IE to Ffox, I don't requisite this added function). It should live in a .9 release soon enough, maybe next month.

What's the title of this app that won't quit at shutdown? The message you perceive ought to report that. If it doesn't, hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the stint Manager, which should list it by name.

Millheim, Pa.: I'm having a problem with getting amplified sound from my speakers. Sound is faint and not affected by muting or raising/lowering volume. I've checked my connections, troubleshooting, even rolled back drivers. Can find no conflicts anywhere. Even substituted other speakers. The final thing I bethink doing is burning a pair CDs (which turned out okay) and then a few days later just happened to notice I couldn't hear anything. It took a while to notice the problem because I don't retain the volume up when working at night. Any ideas?

Rob Pegoraro: Hmm. Hmm. accomplish headphones toil alright? You're positive that the speakers are quiet plugged into a wall outlet that itself has not been switched off? Seems dote you've already done sum the privilege trouble-shooting steps that I'd try... this one's a actual head-scratcher. Any suggestions?

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: final chat, I think, I was the guy who switched to Firefox because after installing MS Office XP, my IE had freaked out. Saw someone later give an easy fix for my problem.

Was having a problem with Outlook, had to start it in safe mode...what accomplish you know, dang MESSenger starts up in my systray. This is my actual problem with MS...ever time you upgrade, etc, they evanesce and blow out sum your settings. It's dote browser hijacking or spam...only in this case, you've actually WANT what's being offered (up to a point).

I've disabled half of the MS "clone" programs (i. e., Messenger vs. AOL IM), yet it's dote the Godfather III....they retain draggin me back in. I guess my point is, until more corps. device out that they are CUSTOMERS, not MINIONS, it seems that they are destined to score second-rate products with second-rate service. I guess that's more of a rant than a point, but I feel better now.

Bob

Rob Pegoraro: Rants are welcome here anytime. And this one raises a useful point--who's the actual customer of sum the stuff they score on their computers? Quite often, it's not us. Many parts of Windows Media Player, for example, are designed for the capitalize of record labels and movie studios, not individual users.

_______________________

Stouffville, Ont.: I currently expend a HP officejet v40 'all-in-one' machine for faxing/printing/copying & scanning. It is a sheet fed machine and is not much limited in use. I am considering a flat bed scanner to scan photos and documents. Can you recommend a machine that incorporates acquiescent document storage software?

Rob Pegoraro: Nope, because that's not something I've tried to accomplish myself (my own scanning toil at home is limited enough to live served well by a tiny HP combo printer-scanner). Any suggestions for Stouffville?

_______________________

Centreville, Va.: Is it practicable that spam filtering rules on my Mail client could live shared by other Macs and my .Mac webmail?

Rob Pegoraro: It's possible, yes, and seems a fairly obvious thing to accomplish as well. But Apple hasn't updated the software to provide that option.

_______________________

Charlotte, N.C.: Cleaning out the clutter: My Dell kept crashing from lack of memory, so I finally had to call tech support when AOL wouldn't run. I went back and forth between AOL and Dell, but the bottom line was Dell tech support had me uncheck everything on startup in msconfig and then read me the list of things to check. I made a written copy of it and retain it immediate at hand. The only thing I've added back is the firewall...It's working okay now!;

Rob Pegoraro: Can you participate that list of "safe" apps? I arbiter a lot of folks here would esteem it.

_______________________

Vienna, Va.: Just a word of warning for those using IMAP. My wife was doing this in order to read her email at toil and at home, just as you recommended. But recently, their provider had a catastrophic RAID failure that they could not retrieve from, so sum that email saved on their server was lost! Most bigger providers should possess ways of recovering from this, but ours did not (yes, they will live taking their accounts elsewhere). Luckily, I had set up the account to cache sum the emails to their local arduous drive, but this setting was not the default, so if I hadn't been careful, she really wound possess lost everything...

Rob Pegoraro: That is a risk with IMAP. But I arbiter the risk is far higher of individual users suffering data loss from computing malfunctions--most of the providers I talked to illustrious that they accomplish backups every night, unlike nearly sum home users (myself included).

Pueblo, Colo.: For a Mac devotee using Netscape and Safari, is there any reason to not try Mozilla's Firefox?

Rob Pegoraro: No--it should certainly replace Netscape quite handily. The Firefox-vs.-Safari debate is harder to settle. I really wish the two apps would finish borrowing each other's features: Safari needs Ffox's more comprehensive integrated searching and find-as-you-type, while Firefox needs Safari's forms auto-fill option and "open links from external applications in unusual tabs" option.

Falls Church DSL Woes follow-up: Tried Covad and Verizon. Neither offered it. Something about copper wires, Verizon said, I think. It's really pretty dejected that of sum the bragging they do, the landline companies don't possess DSL available in every DC-area home. Is there really a dissimilarity in speed between DSL and cable, appreciably, anyway?

Rob Pegoraro: The problem would live if you *don't* possess copper wires leading to your home, not if you do, but odds are whatever sales droids you talked to score their scripts scrambled.

Cable modem services are usually faster in absolute numbers--but it's not a dissimilarity you're likely to notice much, since either service is more than quick enough for any real-time stuff (i.e., Web browsing and audio or video streaming).

I try to exit, it says something dote "You possess a program running that requires this to live open (IE/Outlook etc)" even though I DON'T possess THEM OPEN.

HELP! How can I disable this from starting up every morning?

Rob Pegoraro: Fire up Messenger, select Options off its Tools menu, and uncheck sum the "run at startup" options.

I understand it comes with a firewall so my files should live safe, but can my neighbors borrow bandwidth from me by connecting? I'm unusual at this... Thanks!

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, if you leave the AirPort basis station running in a wide-open mode, your neighbors could start borrowing your bandwidth. Your Internet expend would furthermore live simple for anybody to eavesdrop on. But turning on encryption to secure the connection demands about two clicks, and you should live automatically prompted to accomplish this when you set up the basis station.

Homewood, Ill.: Alas, I won't live able to live at your session in actual time...hope you post it.

I esteem the acquiescent things that you dispute bout FireFox. sum True.

But Opera has most of it, and a all bunch of features that FireFox hasn't gotten to (yet?), such as

1. aliasing favorites

2. mouse gestures and mouse buttons for forward and back (no requisite to recur to the top of the screen)

3. the skill to bare out fancy backgrounds and sort so you can actually read that light sort on sunless background monstrosities that some web designer thought was "cool". (I'm old. Sometimes my eyes don't pick up fancy too well; there are lots of us.)

just to title three that I don't want to give up.

Yes...there are some sites that don't render properly with Opera...(just as they don't with Netscape...haven't tested mozilla) so I wouldn't toss away IE.

Rob Pegoraro: Sorry, not a fan of Opera--not with that mess of an interface. I mean, four different "reload" commands?

(Note to sum Opera fans: I know that 7.5 is reputed to spotless up things. But until that version gets shipped, the browser quiet presents one of the worst UIs I've seen in a Web browser... with the practicable exception of the one mentioned in the next posting.)

You were right, I was wrong - DC: But only kinda privilege and kinda wrong!;

I posted final week about how powerful IE was and you blasted it, so I looked into the alternative browsers dote Firefox.

I fancy tabbed browsing!; But Firefox renders things differently from IE, and let's countenance it, the web is optimized for IE. Plus Firefox can live needlessly complicated and confusing.

So -- and I am NOT a paid spokesposter here -- I establish a freeware tabbed browser that sits on top of IE, but adds many advanced browsing features that Mozilla has.

In other words, IE does the rendering, but this "skin" (called Avant Browser) does the rest. And though it's crashed a pair times since I've installed it, it's a heck of a lot less than IE and IT DOESN'T CRASH WINDOWS!;!;

It's quiet in beta, and it's not perfect, but the imperfections are shallow and infrequently encountered, and I arbiter they're updated fairly regularly anyway.

(Channeling Scarlett O'Hara): With Gates as my witness, I'll never expend IE again!;

Rob Pegoraro: very problem: AvantBrowser (and CrazyBrowser and myIE 2) furthermore suffer from developers who apparently couldn't dispute no to any option. Just behold at the stacked toolbars in the screen shot that graces its home page (www.avantbrowser.com). Sorry, but editing is just as well-known in software development as it is for my own sorry prose.

Washington, D.C.: Adding to your list, Starpower (erols, rcn et al) doesn't 'do' IMAP.

In re: Spam blocking, Starpower along with Verizon are doing a high-level 'spam blocking' that is really bad. I flee a listserve for my kids' school here in DC (Lafayette, the one that had the fire final week), and almost sum of those with Starpower and Verizon domain names are NOT getting their mail from their listserve. It's random, though, as some are getting it and others aren't. Tech support at both places hasn't been able to help, so we're sort-of stuck.

While I really accomplish applaud ISP's attempts to arise the tide of spam, these obvious wide sweeping solutions don't necessarily work.

Rob Pegoraro: Thanks for the report. I'm furthermore hearing of problems with occasional issues sending mail to/from AOL, for much the very reason. These false-positives emerge to score fixed after a few days or maybe a week. If that sounds dote your experience, delight score in handle (rob at twp.com).

Washington, D.C.: Resolution to My Mom's E-Mac failure.

The problem, as it happened, was not the well-publicized Rastar shift one, but rather one I was told by the service folks is just as common -- an intermittent or failed logic board. These service people possess seen lots of these boards fail within 6 months of coming out of the box.

So sum is well with 80 yr age Mom's e-Mac, although I quiet believe Apple's response was terrible. The service guys said that they score tiny information -from- Apple. They possess to regularly evanesce to a specially designated Apple website to perceive what's new.

Rob Pegoraro: This is an update to something posted two weeks ago. I'm joyous to perceive that things finally got fixed--but annoyed to hear that it took so long. Replacing a logic board is almost a default repair in these kinds of situations, and it should possess been done almost overnight.

High Point, N.C.: There are some alternatives to downloading and using the Messenging Programs from Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft, which usually are much more friendly in how they want to start up etc.

My personal suggestion is Gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net but privilege now there are problems with yahoo's unusual authentication scheme, so it doesn't toil powerful for that. it is under lively development and has some very icy features that the other clients then picked up.

Rob Pegoraro: I've tried Gaim myself. To the issues that towering Point noted, I'd add that it looks and feels dote the Linux port that it is--the UI has a lot of rugged edges and just looks frightful in generic once you score past the first screen.

Washington, D.C.: Rob,

I want to score a web page up - just something where I can post photos and keen links. I possess no view where to start. Any recommendations for a novice?

Rob Pegoraro: Start with your ISP, which probably offers some Web space for free. Another option is using Yahoo, which definitely does.

Washington, D.C.: I just got an Ipod and noticed that unless my computer is connected to the internet when I try to rip songs from a CD I don't score the song names and CD title. Isn't this information coded on the CD somewhere?

Rob Pegoraro: Nope--iTunes, just dote other music programs, looks up this data automatically by matching the CD's pattern of track times to an online database. That's why fuse CDs you've done yourself aren't recognized in this way.

Silver Spring, Md.: Just a word about auto-fill. I'm not crazy about having the browser provide that service (may live the result of MS paranoia). For just a pair of bucks Robo-form gives me more autofill capability than I would ever requisite and, unless, they're REALLY tricky, leaves it sum under my control.

Rob Pegoraro: Agreed. That's why I dote how Safari handles it (which, in turn, is based on the feature Microsoft added to the Mac version of IE about 5 years ago, but which was never included in IE for Windows): Unless you click the auto-fill button, nothing gets pasted into forms for you.

Otherwise, when you start typing into fields with titles that match the auto-fill database (name, address, phone number, e-mail, etc.), Safari will tender to fill in that info, but you can override it by continuing to sort something else.

San Jose, Calif.: Thank you for your timely article on IMAP vs. POP. As a professional IT person I possess a question about one line in your article:

Microsoft's Outlook and Qualcomm's Eudora suffer from strangely sloppy IMAP support.

Could you live more specific on how "sloppy" Outlook is with IMAP? I score a lot of questions from home users about personal email programs and would dote to know benevolent of problems might crop up.

Rob Pegoraro: The principal profile of sloppiness is that Outlook doesn't delete messages properly--they quiet emerge in a message list, but in a strikethrough, grayed-out font. They don't evanesce until you select "Purge Deleted Messages" from one of the menus.

Technically, this is an accurate portrayal of what happens on the server, but it suggests to the user that they haven't deleted things "right." The better route is to hurry the deleted messages to a Trash folder, where they don't score in the route but can quiet live inspected before you blank the trash.

Thanks!; Marg

Rob Pegoraro: I was just in your neck of the woods final week (my trip wasn't sum work, OK? :)... a regular Google search returns a list of sites that Google thinks matches your query. An "I'm emotion lucky" search takes you directly to the site that Google thinks is most relevant, without the wait to perceive a page of search results.

Also, the pop-up blocker is arduous to configure...is the site where the pop-up comes from or the URL of the pop-up itself?

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, some monetary institutions play that game, although I haven't approach across that issue myself in my own almost IE-free browsing. Which ones are at foible in your case?

If you want to allow pop-ups from specific sites, sum you requisite to accomplish is provide the domain title of the site that launches the pop-ups, not the address of each pop-up.

Rob Pegoraro: I arbiter Millheim has already done this, but in case he/she hasn't, here you are.

Re: Stacked toolbars in Avant: Unpaid spokesposter again...

Yeah, I establish the abundant toolbars a tiny daunting at first, but again, it's in beta, plus you can customize them out of existence.

Right now I've got a compact setup with only the features I expend regularly. The rest I accomplish with keystrokes or that powerful invention, mouse gestures. (It furthermore helps that I possess an IntelliMouse with those extra buttons. Really helps.)

Rob Pegoraro: Ooh, these are the two worst excuses in software development.

"It's in beta": Bzzt, wrong answer! A beta version is reputed to live feature-complete, which means you should possess the interface finished by then--that way, the beta testers can focus on finding bugs instead of fixing features. Simplicity isn't something you can airbrush on in the final months of development; it has to start early on.

"You can customize...": Wrong again! Most users never handle the defaults. The default interface should live the one commandeer for sum users; the geekier stuff can safely live left off, since the geekier users will know to behold for it in the options/settings/preferences windows.

I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Sun Java. No difference.

Can you give me a clue as to what happened and how to score this off at start up.

thanks.

Rob Pegoraro: Until I got halfway down your message, I was going to dispute "reinstall the Sun software." If I did and I had that very problem, I'd quiz the Wachovia folks why their site is so far behind the competition; American Express's site, for example, works perfectly in non-IE browsers.

Is there a known problem with the XP stint Manager causing me to worry about a non-problem, am I misinterpreting stint Manager, or should I live looking elsewhere?

I will live interested in trying the Firefox Browser and other third party s/w, but only when I possess more aplomb in my current configuration. Thanks for any feedback.

Rob Pegoraro: Not positive what might live the issue. System Idle Process on this Windows 2000 machine can easily flee that high, but it does drop down when other apps are in use. How much memory accomplish you possess on your Dell? Washington, D.C.: Hi Rob -- I'd dote to try out the Post's unusual RSS feeds, but I'm having a arduous time sifting through the readers. After reading reviews at CNET and such, it looks dote the sum of the readers for Windows possess some pretty unattractive features/requirements (e.g., require .NET, are add-ons to IE, are arduous to setup). possess you establish a nice, free RSS client, or even a not-so-free client that's worth the registration fee?

washingtonpost.com: Read the Post's recent review of RSS readers, and check out washingtonpost.com's RSS feeds page.

Rob Pegoraro: I agree; I went through a lot of different RSS clients before settling on SharpReader myself. I decided that the .Net framework requirement was acceptable, that it ran mercurial enough on my computers, and that once I copied its folder over the C:\Program Files\, I wouldn't possess to arbiter about its lack of an installer.

Still, it's missing a few features that I esteem sum the time in NetNewsWire Lite on the Mac, dote being able to perceive its list of current headlines by clicking on its Dock icon, then imprint them sum as read from that very icon.

Does the iPod lose sum its data during the process? Any technical hazards to worry about? Etc. many thanks.

Rob Pegoraro: I arbiter I can answer most of the questions privilege here... namely, since sum the data is stored on a arduous drive, not glisten memory, you shouldn't lose any of it (although syncing it up before sending it out for any service is just a acquiescent idea, period) and that there are no technical hazards unique to a battery replacement (as in, the tech doing the service could drop a soldering iron by mistake, but that could betide anytime you've got the case cracked open).

I'm not positive there would live much to review--or much to review unless they did this a *lot* of times.

How can I find out more about how corporations collect this information and protecting my privacy?

Rob Pegoraro: acquiescent question, Jim Owens of 1201 Wilkes St.

Sorry, couldn't resist that :) There are a lot of keen databases to match people against, and that's probably what's going on here. sum you requisite is the privilege benevolent of magic number, dote a credit card, to tie different databases together. Arlington, Va.: People retain talking about "backing up" your files and I know the reason. What I don't know is: which files accomplish you back up? Specifically which extensions accomplish you requisite to protect? Thanks

Rob Pegoraro: I find it's easier to arbiter in terms of file locations, not extensions. Assuming you actually accomplish rescue sum your toil to My Documents or a sub-folder of that--which you should do, or you'll never live able to find the things again--you can safely concentrate on backing up that folder, along with your browser bookmarks (it's simplest to expend your browser's "export" command to dump a copy of them into My Documents).

Rob Pegoraro: null that I'm vigilant of, and I've tried this with earlier, rougher versions. Firefox doesn't possess any complicated hooks into the system, as IE does, so it's simple to install and uninstall (you'll notice, for instance, that there's no restart required).

Is there any route (easy or hard) to occupy the emails off my age computer and migrate them over to the unusual one? The final time I tried this(just saving the folders and loading them on the unusual one) it was an utter failure, but I had no view what I was doing. Am I (hopefully) missing the obvious answer?

Thanks for your help!

Rob Pegoraro: If you're not positive what mail program you're using, then it almost always is Outlook Express, the default in Windows. expend the File menu's export command to copy out your mailboxes and other settings, hurry those exported files to the unusual computer, then expend OE's import command (also in the File menu) to tow in the exported data.

Now I can just evanesce to my bookmark folder, hit "open in tabs", and sum of my favorite comics load in one window. It's the coolest browser development in YEARS.

Would it live a worthy experiment for these networks to create a generic identity schema for a one-registration fits sum cartel!? I'm sick of managing multiple profiles! :-)

=================================

My answer: It sum looks dote the very benevolent of fads that swept the Web in '99. Once again, they possess a lot of different sites, sum essentially offering the very thing.
