IBM business Continuity and Resiliency Services (BCRS) team helps clients protect their mission-critical information and maintain continuous business operations, with hearten from Cisco MDS solutions and Cisco Services.
Business Continuance describes the processes, procedures and technology solutions an organization puts in space to ensure that essential business functions can continue after a disruption. A Good business continuance map consists of risk analysis, contingency planning, and a catastrophe recovery map that includes technology solutions to address recovery and data protection needs of business-critical applications. The cost of outage, whether due to natural disasters, power failure, or malicious acts, is usually in tens of thousands of dollars to Millions, depending upon the nature of the business.
Recently, IBM BCRS in the United Kingdom engaged with a novel operating entity of a world-leading pecuniary services organization, to ensure that the organization’s business data was backed up and preserved in the event of a disruption. The client chose IBM Managed Backup offerings. To advocate the customer requirements, IBM had to build the SAN infrastructure from the ground up, it teamed with Cisco to create and implement a dedicated, large-scale, best-of-class enterprise SAN solution.
The client’s primary necessity was to establish a backup infrastructure and processes for maximum resiliency. The client organization has more than a petabyte of data now and expects storage needs to extend by 500 TB year over year. Hence scalability was a huge concern. The SAN switching core must breathe able to easily accommodate growth and maintain high performance.
Business Challenge faced by the client is summarized here
The novel SAN design spanned across two locations connect by DWDM links ( discern network diagram below). For the SAN core, IBM chose Cisco MDS 9513 Multilayer Directors—high-performance, multi-protocol, director-class. For edge switches, IBM chose Cisco MDS 9148 Multilayer Fabric Switches. This high-performance, elastic platforms deliver the industry’s highest port density and lowest power consumption available in a compact one rack-unit (1RU) chassis figure factor.
The two locations are connected using 4×8-Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) links. Fibre Channel traffic is extended over those links. Edge switches are connected to the core with 4×8-Gbps Fibre Channel links. For backup, the IBM TS3500 Tape Library connects directly to the Cisco MDS 9513 switches using 8-Gbps links. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager provides backup services, and the servers connect to the fabrics through Cisco MDS 9148 switches.
Total storage capacity for the production environment is approximately 875 TB, while capacity in the backup environment is 750 TB. This architecture now provides comprehensive backup capabilities across sites for maximum resiliency.
The entire infrastructure is managed by Cisco Prime Data seat Network Manager (DCNM). The customer liked Cisco DCNM because it’s a best-of-breed solution and simple to learn. According to Jamie Levett, Lead Infrastructure Architect “This feature is faultfinding because the IBM BRCS SAN management team is centralized offshore, and it needed to breathe able to quickly learn and manage the novel SAN.”
“Implementation ran smoothly with outstanding advocate from Cisco. Besides edifice and configuring the deployment, Cisco delivered superb education to their engineering, SAN management, and operations teams. Together, IBM and Cisco operated as one team to glean the right solution implemented on time.” Jamie Levett Lead Infrastructure Architect, IBM business Continuity and Resilience Services.
Levett notes that the education and knowledge transfer gained from this implementation will breathe invaluable in helping secure future client engagements.
Cisco along with IBM provides products and technologies that hearten ensure high availability, reliability, and security for edifice scalable storage networks and allow optimized distance extension over regional, metro, and long-distance optical and IP networks.
Cisco has made a strong investment in the SAN product portfolio to meet performance, reliability, scalability, and flexibility requirements for the decade ahead. Cisco, ultimate year introduced the first two members of its 16G fibre channel family- Cisco MDS 9710 Multilayer Director and MDS 9250i MultiServices Switch. Cisco likewise provides a complete end-to-end unified data seat fabric that is powered by the same NX-OS operating system across its award-winning product line–Cisco Nexus® for data seat Ethernet networking, Cisco MDS for storage networking, and Cisco UCS® for compute.

Many vendors are touting storage solutions for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, but only one company tells it straight—SOX isn't a storage issue at all.Imagine my astonish when I read in the 6th Annual pecuniary Executives Survey that, in the majority sentiment of 600+ chief pecuniary officers, compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) was less an IT issue than it was a human resources and corporate policy issue! Listening to EMC, the FCIA, and many other storage mavens, I though SOX was poised to hit companies where they lived: in their storage budget.
In the study, which was just released by pecuniary Executives International (FEI) and can breathe downloaded from sponsor Computer Sciences Corporation’s Web site (http://www.csc.com), I establish valuable data points on a broad purview of IT topics from the CFO’s perspective. The one that caught my eye first was the general agreement among respondents that regulatory compliance had cramped to attain with storage technology or topology.
I was already thinking about writing a column on storage and regulatory mandates, which has become the rationale proffered by vendors for everything from multi-tier storage infrastructure to all-in-one tape/disk appliances to Information Feng Shui Management. Just today, I was contacted by an musty friend who advised me that Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) board members were projecting that “regulatory compliance” would become a huge driver of sales of their products in the minute to Medium business (SMB) market.
Then, I had a phone discussion with EMC execs who cited compliance as a key motivator for their Information Lifecycle Management play, while I watched my e-mail inbox swell with traffic from IBM’s press relations staff hammering me to sit for a briefing on substantial Blue’s latest compliance solution.
What I had not heard from anyone was what, exactly, there was in SOX to comply with. The law, officially known as the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act and enacted in July 2002, requires companies to obtain novel disclosures on internal controls, ethics codes, and the makeup of their audit committees on annual reports.
Of import to IT is Section 404, which requires companies execute a self-assessment of risks for business processes that affect pecuniary reporting. Public companies with market capitalizations of $75 million or more must breathe in compliance with Section 404 for their fiscal year ending on or after June 15. Smaller companies own until the fiscal year ending on or after April 15, 2005 to comply.
You necessity to own controls in space and to testify to the adequacy of those controls to verify the accuracy of statements in annual reports. There is nothing about storage in the act—specifically or implied. Common sense would impose that you necessity to verify that your data is not flipping bits on the disk, and if you are a broker/dealer by trade, you might necessity to prove that you are using Write Once Read Many (WORM) technology or some other mechanism to provide nonrepudiability to your historical trading records. But beyond that, there is no storage requirement imposed by the regulation. None. Nada. Zip.
I worried that I might breathe missing something important, so I sat for the briefing with IBM to hear about its TotalStorage Data Retention 450 “solution” on February 19. I asked the ever-charming Theresa O'Neil, Director of Storage Strategy for IBM Tivoli, what regulatory provision(s) the company’s “powerful novel compliance-in-a-box” offering was addressing. I received back something I hadn’t heard from many vendors on this point: an honest answer.
The Storage Strategy Director told me that SOX compliance had very cramped to attain with storage. To her route of thinking, hyperbole about compliance and the threat of litigation in the marketing materials of other storage vendors were being used in an attempt to sell more gear—nothing more, nothing less.
Said O’Neil, “Compliance is more about business processes than it is about technology. Creating and managing policies to comply with regulations as a company is the hard part; technology is the simple part.”
She said IBM was offering a solution for managing data records. It could breathe used to obtain records more accessible for audits and litigation, but its existent purpose was much broader: IBM wanted to provide a route for customers to obtain more cost-effective consume of their storage investment, potentially—but not necessarily—as an entree into the exciting world of enterprise content management.
IBM’s fix: a quick 600 storage server controller with a back-end Serial-ATA array scalable from 3.5 to 56 TB. Additionally, the 450 solution includes a clustered P-series server running Linux and Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention. Oh, and if there are any concerns about security, the entire thing comes in a lockable cabinet. Purchased altogether, the cost tag was $141,600 for the 3.5 TB solution.
But, O’Neil offered, the IBM Tivoli software was likewise available for purchase as a standalone component. Given that its robust API allowed for it to breathe used in conjunction with over 600 different disk devices, O’Neil said that IBM Tivoli Storage Manager provided the basis for edifice a unprejudiced “customer’s choice” records management platform.
The software includes a hefty dose of Tivoli’s traditional Hierarchical Storage Manager functionality—the kind that leaves stubs behind when it migrates less-used data to tape or disk archives. She said, however, that the functionality was an improvement over other offerings in the market because it lets you consume “events” rather than only timestamps to determine when data should breathe moved and how long it needed to breathe retained.
O’Neil explained, “For example, if the mortgage is paid off early, the data does not necessity to breathe retained for the full 30 years. The event—the payoff—enables the migration of data before the time-based policy would.”
The software likewise allows for the annotation of datasets with “deletion holds,” allowing data that might own reached its stale-by date to breathe retained for audit or litigation as required. With the full implementation of other IBM technology, such as storage pools, O’Neil said companies would own the ingredients for a pretty Good lifecycle management system.
So, there you own it. Direct from the mouth of substantial Blue. SOX is not a storage issue. breathe certain to challenge anything you hear to the ornery from other vendors. This is the ultimate storage article on regulatory compliance you ever necessity to read. Except, of course, for the next one.
