SUN Solaris 8 System Administration

Solaris eight user Administration tools | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Peter Gregory discusses consumer account configuration data; adding, modifying, and deleting consumer accounts with Admintool and shell commands; person shells; and consumer account instructions in Solaris eight.

This pattern chapter is excerpted from sun licensed gear Administrator for Solaris eight study e-book, with the aid of Peter Gregory.

This chapter is from the ebook 

After completing this chapter, you are going to live capable of

  • determine the following login procedures: log into a gadget, symptom off of a equipment, and change login passwords.

  • State the command used to establish which clients are currently logged into the device.

  • State the steps required to create consumer money owed on the endemic system using the admintool utility.

  • State the command syntax to add, adjust, or delete person/neighborhood debts on the local system with the useradd, groupadd, usermod, groupmod, userdel, or groupdel instructions.

  • Given a user's login shell, record the shell initialization information used to set up a user's drudgery atmosphere at login.

  • to meet these goals, this chapter discusses:

  • user account configuration data;

  • adding, modifying, and deleting user debts with Admintool;

  • including, enhancing, and deleting user debts with shell commands;

  • user shells; and

  • user account commands.

  • Three well-known files outline the identification of a consumer account: the password file, the shadow file, and the community file.

    The Password File

The password file includes the primary opting for recommendation for every person allowed to access a device. The system region of the password file is /etc/passwd. The structure of the password file is:

    username:password:uid:gid:gcos-field:home-dir:login-shell

    These fields are:

  • username—the identify that identifies the consumer account.

  • password—in Solaris eight an "x" during this box means that the corresponding shadow file consists of the encrypted password string.

  • uid—the enjoyable numerical identity assigned to the account. The maximum expense for UID is 2147483647, but directors are advised to consume values lower than 60,000 to execute certain compatibility with complete of the gear which are used to manage accounts or screen recommendation that includes usernames.

  • gid—the fundamental (default) numerical community identification assigned to the account. relish the UID field, the highest value for GID is 2147483647, however a highest of 60,000 is preferable.

  • gcos-field—here's the person's actual identify (the time age "gcos-field" is the ancient time age for this field).

  • home-dir—the listing where the user is placed after logging in; this always includes the user's personal files and directories.

  • login-shell—the initial shell this is began on behalf of the person upon logging in. If this box is clean, then /usr/bin/sh is used.

  • The password file may likewise live examine through anybody on the device. There is not any counsel that hold to live stored furtive in this file. A pattern password file seems relish this:

    root:x:0:1:tremendous-user:/:/sbin/sh daemon:x:1:1::/: bin:x:2:2::/usr/bin: sys:x:3:three::/: adm:x:4:four:Admin:/var/adm: lp:x:71:8:Line Printer Admin:/usr/spool/lp: uucp:x:5:5:uucp Admin:/usr/lib/uucp: nuucp:x:9:9:uucp Admin:/var/spool/uucppublic:/usr/lib/uucp/uucico hear:x:37:4:network Admin:/usr/web/nls: pete:x:one hundred:4:Peter Gregory:/export/domestic/pete:/bin/sh no one:x:60001:60001:no one:/:

Fields within the password file are delimited by using colons (":"), and blank fields are signified by means of two adjacent colons ("::"). for example, commemorate that the account cognomen territory for daemon is clean—simply two colons. also, daemon has no shell entry, so the final character for daemon is the colon delimiter.

The colon delimiter is likewise used in the shadow and neighborhood files, which might live mentioned in a later part.

it's viable and permissible to create multiple username in the password file with the equal UID. each and every username will hold its own unique password. besides the fact that children, tools such as ls and ps, when used with alternatives displaying username, will screen the primary username institute in the password file matching the UID.

When a fresh account is brought, modified, or removed with the useradd, usermod, or userdel instructions (that are discussed later during this chapter), the gear creates a backup reproduction of the password file, known as /and many others/opasswd.

    The Shadow File

The shadow file carries every user account's encrypted password, in addition to specific per-account parameters governing "password growing old." The system region of the shadow file is /and many others/shadow. The layout of the shadow file is:

    username:password:lastchg:min:max:warn:inactive:expire:flag

    These fields are:

  • username—this is the identical username institute in the password file.

  • password—a 13-persona encrypted password. If this box carries a lock string (e.g., "locked" or "NP"), the account is inaccessible; if blank, the account has no password.

  • lastchg—date of remaining password alternate (actually the number of days between January 1, 1970, and the date the password became last modified).

  • min—minimum number of days allowed earlier than the password will likewise live modified.

  • max—highest number of days allowed earlier than the password expires.

  • warn—the variety of days earlier than expiration that the user is warned.

  • inactive—the number of days of inactiveness allowed for the account earlier than the account is immediately locked.

  • expire—the date when the person account is deactivated.

  • flag—a territory reserved for future use.

  • The shadow file is proscribed in order that simplest the device administrator can study it. here is as a result of an interloper could effect a "dictionary assault," the consume of guessable passwords in an try and determine the passwords for one or extra debts. courses that "crack" account passwords are available for this intention; for this reason, the shadow file is not publicly readable.

A pattern shadow file seems relish this:

    root:Pe0iQfp2LcAig:10528:::::: daemon:NP:6445:::::: bin:NP:6445:::::: sys:NP:6445:::::: adm:nIP3GPx2FIZYQ:11053:::::: lp:NP:6445:::::: uucp:NP:6445:::::: nuucp:NP:6445:::::: listen:*LK*::::::: pete:GSSUYVrJ8EKyA:11055:::::: nobody:NP:6445::::::

word that one of the accounts in the instance shadow file hold "NP" ("no password") or "*LK*" (locked) in them. These are only two methods of signifying that the money owed are locked towards login. there's nothing really magic about "NP" or "*LK*"—they are only a fashion of with no exertion displaying that these money owed are locked and going to dwell that approach. You could apportion other textual content within the password box to felicitous your wants; for example, a helpdesk ticket number or a date.

When a person alterations his or her password, the system creates a backup copy of the shadow file, known as /etc/oshadow. This additionally occurs if root adjustments a user's password.

    exam Notes

    consider About It . . .

Why are encrypted passwords present in /etc/shadow and not in /etc/passwd?

for many commands (ps, ls, and many others.) to drudgery effectively, /and many others/passwd should live world readable. earlier than using /etc/shadow, complete users' encrypted password strings had been likewise publicly readable. This gave americans with "password cracking" classes an occasion to find other users' passwords. via relocating the encrypted password strings to /and many others/shadow (which will likewise live study handiest with the aid of root), the capability to entry encrypted passwords is eradicated.

First, slightly of background. Older models of UNIX didn't hold a shadow file; as a substitute, the encrypted password string become present in the password file, in the second box that is constantly filled with an "x" in Solaris. Solaris nevertheless helps the encrypted password appearing in the password file, however here's not a reliable suggestion, due to the fact the password file is publicly readable.

Older versions of UNIX with no shadow file additionally had no password-getting debilitated means.

The network suggestions system (NIS) subsystem become designed around the historic shadow-much less architecture; this explains why NIS has no shadow map, nor does it aid password growing old.

    The group File

The neighborhood file incorporates a catalogue of complete the groups on the equipment, together with every community's numeric groupid and a listing of each of the usernames which are secondary members of each and every community. The vicinity of the community file is /and so forth/community. The format of the neighborhood file is:

    groupname:password:gid:user-record

    These fields are:

  • groupname—here's the cognomen of the neighborhood.

  • password—this is an not obligatory password for the group.

  • gid—the piquant numerical identity assigned to the group. The maximum cost for GID is 2147483647, but directors are advised to consume values less than 60,000 to execute certain compatibility with the entire gear which are used to control debts or monitor guidance that contains neighborhood names.

  • consumer-record—a comma-separated record of users allowed within the neighborhood. These groups are clients' secondary group IDs.

  • A pattern group file follows.

    root::0:root different::1: bin::2:root,bin,daemon sys::three:root,bin,sys,adm adm::four:root,adm,daemon uucp::5:root,uucp mail::6:root tty::7:root,tty,adm lp::8:root,lp,adm nuucp::9:root,nuucp staff:GSSUYVrJ8EKyA:10:pete daemon::12:root,daemon sysadmin::14: no person::60001: noaccess::60002: nogroup::65534:

be cognizant the password territory within the group "group of workers." organizations may likewise live password included via putting a password string into the password container. observe, though, that this is a completely lead manner; there are no tools provided to apportion the community password in for you.

trace: you could remove a password string from the shadow file and consume the vi editor to splice it into the community file. The neighborhood password may live the equal because the account password from the shadow entry the station you took the password string.

When a gaggle is password included, any person who isn't a member of the neighborhood might live challenged for the community's password when they hold entered the newgrp command.

    simple and Secondary Groupids

each consumer account has one primary groupid—this is the neighborhood defined in the password file. When a person logs on, here is his or her associated groupid.

every user account likewise has zero or greater secondary groupids. A user's secondary organizations are those group entries that encompass the username in their lists of individuals.

There are some constructive boundaries of groupids. for instance, every person account can likewise live in no more than sixteen companies, and a line in the neighborhood file cannot exceed 512 characters (including the newline persona).

What occurs if you deserve to add so many contributors to a group that you exceed the 512-personality entry restrict? You easily create another duplicate group entry—identical identify and group number—and list the further participants there.

The fundamental and secondary groupids at once impact file gear entry permissions, which is explored completely in Chapter 10.

    examination Notes

    believe About It . . .

What will live the consequence if a username were added to a bunch file entry when that neighborhood was the user's primary group?

The extra entry would hold no impact, in view that the user is already configured for the basic group membership within the /and so forth/passwd file.

    the root Account

the basis account has particular privileges on a system: Root is authorised to read and write every file on a gadget, despite the file's possession and authorization settings. gear administrators log in with the root account so they can effect administrative projects.

the basis account gets its energy and privilege from the expense of its user quantity: Root is consumer quantity zero, defined in the password file.

    examination Notes

    suppose About It . . .

What often is the consequences of changing a typical consumer's user quantity to zero? What abilities might there live of placing root's entry on the recess of the passwd file (as an alternative of the starting)?

changing an ordinary user's user number to zero gives the consumer root privileges.

One expertise of putting root on the recess of the password file is that if an intruder is capable of alter the password file to supply a further person root privilege (see the primary question here), then output from commands such as ls and ps would demonstrate that other consumer because the proprietor of root methods and information.

Solaris system performance tuning | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

just relish an automobile, a laptop device wants tuning and optimization as a artery to supply the highest attribute efficiency given a undeniable system configuration and workload. fortunately, solar comprises a number of utilities that will likewise live used to computer screen and change system settings to win premiere outcomes from your installation. right here, i will live able to focus on Solaris 10, despite the fact the strategies described are pertinent to earlier Solaris models and in some situations different UNIX-based working programs.

Some components that can touch a laptop gadget's efficiency can live institute reminiscence, disk I/O, and CPU utilization. Solaris offers the vmstat and iostat utilities (amongst others) to video parade these gadget elements.

vmstat is short for "virtual reminiscence information". it may give recommendation on kernel threads, physical and digital memory, disk I/O, and CPU utilization. When sprint with not a soul command line options, it'll return facts that represents and average of system pastime given that the closing boot. I find it extra advantageous to sprint vmstat 1; this can supply the commonplace-due to the fact that-last-boot on the first line, and then sample statistics once a second, stopping when CTRL-C is pushed. If such exceptional-grained aspect isn't mandatory, running vmstat 5 would give a gadget commonplace and then one endeavor image each 5 seconds. here is specimen output from vmstat 1 running for 4 seconds:

    kthr reminiscence web page disk faults cpu r b w swap free re mf pi po fr de sr f0 s0 s1 s6 in sy cs us sy identification 0 0 0 1922440 1812392 36 232 115 5 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 315 310 198 10 3 87 0 1 0 1525552 1790400 0 185 1426 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1396 1279 1099 0 1 ninety nine 0 0 0 1595216 1806368 8 173 1204 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1282 1304 862 2 2 96 0 0 0 1595456 1806672 0 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 818 2150 897 1 1 98

From left to appropriate, the fields betray kernel thread pastime (within the sprint queue, blocked for resources, and ready), free digital and precise reminiscence, page faults (transfers from disk to memory), disk recreation, device lure/name/interrupts, and CPU utilization (in user, system, and idle time).

Diagnosing your device's troublespotsThe first section to live concerned about is free reminiscence. When a device runs low on physical reminiscence, it's going to web page (every now and then often known as "swap") facts from that RAM into its virtual reminiscence on disk storage. Idle non-active methods and their address zone in actual reminiscence can likewise live paged out unless they may live obligatory once again. When feasible, always hold ample actual RAM in a gadget to steer limpid of going into "swap." using immoderate amounts of paging house in lieu of exact reminiscence can vastly demean system performance as a result of actual storage may likewise live orders of magnitude slower than device RAM. If a device runs out of free physical reminiscence and paging area, it could desist to characteristic correctly or lock up.

An debilitated tenet for allocating digital reminiscence was "make it double the quantity of actual memory," but as the cost of RAM has dropped, the amount of reminiscence installed in programs nowadays has improved. really, it has accelerated so tons that in some cases using this guideline consequences in too a entire lot wasted paging house allotted. believe a system's meant workload when allocating virtual reminiscence. utility vendors will usually hold minimal device requirements that should live met for his or her products. For widespread goal methods (these with 4G or much less of reminiscence) I always earmark 2G of swap.

The next zone is page faults. A web page fault occurs when a gadget tries to entry facts in reminiscence that has been paged out to disk. When this occurs an interrupt is generated and the data must live retrieved from moving storage. Pay shut consideration to the "pi" (kilobytes paged in) and "po" (kilobytes paged out) symptoms. constant giant numbers can live a symptom of insufficient physical reminiscence for the device's workload.

After web page faults comes disk undertaking, which is measured in disk operations (input or output) per 2nd. up to 4 disks may hold their pastime shown.

Following disk exercise is CPU usage, shown as us (consumer time), sy (gadget time), and identification (idle time). if you hold diverse processors, the numbers proven are a orthodox across the entire CPUs. immoderate CPU utilization isn't a foul factor (it just aptitude the processors are being utilized to their fullest), however immoderate CPU utilization combined with heavy disk endeavor and heavy swapping can point out a problem with hardware configuration. Low CPU usage and immoderate disk undertaking can insinuate that a gadget is perhaps spending too tons time waiting on disk pastime. heavy swapping with orthodox disk and CPU exercise will likewise live an illustration that a gadget doesn't hold enough physical RAM. complete of those opinions are very situation and software particular; a device it's perfectly configured for one workload can likewise live severely underpowered to deal with yet another.

historic and precise-time monitoring toolsFor a extra certain look into disk endeavor, Solaris offers the iostat command. comparable to vmstat, it may likewise live used to give a working log of disk utilization. right here's pattern output from operating iostat 1 for four seconds (as with vmstat, the first line of output is a typical of endeavor considering that the closing device boot):

    tty sd0 sd1 sd6 nfs1 cpu tin tout kps tps serv kps tps serv kps tps serv kps tps serv us sy wt id 1 51 fifty seven 5 30 151 sixteen 18 0 0 0 0 0 0 10 three 2 eighty five 0 635 0 0 0 64 eight 21 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 a hundred 0 331 0 0 0 61 eight 18 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 97 0 329 0 0 0 109 13 13 0 0 0 0 0 0 13 1 0 86

I/O information are given for terminal and disk activity when it comes to kilobytes per 2d, transactions per 2d, and the habitual carrier time for each and every request in milliseconds. CPU pastime is shown as person, equipment, wait, and idle time (akin to the output of vmstat).

once more, it's very application specific, but a remarkable artery to tune a system for efficiency is to execute certain that its physical reminiscence, virtual memory, disk (potential and i/O), and CPU utilization are complete evenly balanced, making bound that no separate aspect is loaded more than the leisure. It isn't respectable to hold CPU sitting idle ready on disk I/O, disk waiting on an overloaded CPU, or inadequate actual RAM causing heavy swapping that slows the leisure of the system down. In some instances here is no longer complete the time actual; for instance, a database server can likewise hold heavy disk activity that doesn't point out misconfiguration.

For historical (in station of precise-time) performance monitoring over a collection period, Solaris contains sar, the system exercise Reporter. information from sar is recorded right into a binary file that is not without problems readable, but many utilities exist to parse sar facts into stories and graphs. The most effectual common of those utilities is doubtless the commercial product SarCheck.

In most cases, a Solaris gadget is self-tuning with regards to inside gear kernel parameters. however, if a problem is encountered that cannot live solved by means of enough actual RAM, disk or CPU, manual kernel tuning could live crucial. In these situations, an utility dealer may point out what parameters to change within the /and many others/system file, or the values to change for particular points can live institute in solar's Solaris Tunable Parameters Reference guide.

The next stage after device tuning is software tuning. sadly an in-depth examine app tuning is past the scope of this short article. There are a variety of on-line elements purchasable:

additional analyzing for Solaris system optimization and tuningThe prstat utility, protected with Solaris, can deliver true-time views of a gadget's recreation and aid consumption related to individual techniques and threads.

truss is yet another Solaris utility used to hint gear and library calls made with the aid of a manner.

Solaris 10 added DTrace, which lets a gear administrator or application developer dynamically track system facets and application techniques without needing to "wrap" an utility similar to truss around the process. The DTrace a artery to engage gives a short introduction, and the Solaris Dynamic Tracing e-book gives finished DTrace documentation.

a number of books were written totally about Solaris gadget optimization and tuning. listed below are a few of my favorites:

sun efficiency Tuning: Java and the internet is an older title, but nonetheless advantageous for conventional device optization ideas and older releases of Solaris.

Solaris Internals: Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris Kernel architecture and Solaris efficiency and equipment: DTrace and MDB ideas for Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris were at the start a separate title, however the ebook ended up being so huge that the authors lop up it up into two publications. The authors additionally maintain the Solaris Internals and performance FAQ Wiki that consists of how-to courses, optimum practices files, scripts, and tutorials on Solaris system optimization.

This brief article can only start to scratch the surface of gear tuning and optimization, however hopefully these simple guidelines and tips to greater superior substances aid you resolve your system performance issues.

Solaris Operating System Availability Features | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Solaris maintains a list of pages not being used. This list of pages is known as the freelist. When a fresh page is needed, one is taken off the freelist. To remove a page from consume permanently, it is enough to ensure that when it is no longer being used by the system, it is not returned to the freelist. Essentially, it will remain unused until the system is rebooted and the OS starts over with a fresh freelist. When a page is no longer being used, the OS calls the role page_free() on that page.

This section discusses some of the reasons for page retirement, and how faulty pages are handled.

Page Retirement is implemented via bug IDs 4484338, 4504686, and 4880360. A reminiscence DIMM which is experiencing repeated correctable (single-bit) errors has an increased probability of experiencing an uncorrectable (multi-bit) error. Likewise, the probability of a reminiscence oversight condition which could result in system downtime likewise increases.

To assist address this, fresh features hold been implemented for both UltraSPARC II-based and UltraSPARC III-based systems. These features attempt to proactively foretell which system reminiscence components (DIMMs) hold an increased probability of experiencing an uncorrectable error, and subsequently remove this reminiscence from future consume when it is no longer used by the kernel or any processes. Limits are placed on the number of reminiscence pages which can live retired from use.

A CPU receives notification that a correctable reminiscence oversight has occurred via the trap mechanism. This initiates the following sequence of events:

Because of reminiscence interleaving, every DIMM in the system has multiple pages associated with it. Conversely, a separate physical page consists of portions of physical reminiscence from multiple DIMMs.

The OS distinguishes between pages that hold correctable or uncorrectable errors. A page with an uncorrectable oversight which might live able to live cleared is marked as toxic. Pages that are mapped to a DIMM that has experienced multiple correctable errors are marked as failing. Recall earlier that DIMMs could live marked as deteriorating. A deteriorating DIMM contains pages that are either toxic or failing.

If a page is marked toxic, the OS attempts to antiseptic any errors from the page using a scrubbing algorithm when page_free() is invoked on that page. If it can verify that there are no errors on the page after it does its scrubbing, it allows that page to live returned to the freelist. This ensures that a separate oversight does not antecedent a page to live removed from the system. If the scrubbing is unsuccessful, the page is marked as failing. Further, if it is no longer in consume by other threads, the page is immediately retired.

If a page is marked failing, no attempt is made to antiseptic the page via scrubbing. It is immediately retired if it is no longer in consume by other threads.

Page Retirement does not utilize DR. Automatic DR of an entire system board or its subcomponents is not attempted due to one or more pages being retired on a board. If a system administrator manually performs DR on a system board containing retired pages out of a domain and into the identical or another domain, the pages will live lively again if the POST process is successful.

There is currently no mechanism to inform POST/OBP of deteriorating DIMMs. For this reason, there exists no fashion to remove a page from consume permanently across reboots. The recess result is that pages retired during one OS sprint become available again at the next boot.

Bug ID 4401262 describes a hang condition during dynamic reconfiguration. If a system board with DIMMs containing retired pages is subsequently dynamically reconfigured from the system, the DR operation hangs during the DR unconfigure stage. Note that you might likewise encounter a reminiscence oversight during DR which invokes the page retirement algorithms during the DR operation. This is expected to result in the identical hang condition; however, test cases hold not proven this. The message to understand regarding Solaris 8 Kernel Update patches prior to 108528-24 and Solaris 9 Kernel Update patches 112233-08 and earlier is that DR should not live used on a system board containing known retired pages. Service to the DIMM should live postponed until such time as the OS can live taken down.

Bug ID 4854496 describes a panic condition that results from dereferencing a pointer which resides on a page already zeroed by page retirement. While no customers hold experienced this panic condition outside of artificially created conditions, it is theoretically viable for it to occur.

While it is not recommended, armed with this scholarship you can understand the DR interaction and potential panic conditions, and enable page retirement on those systems which necessity to utilize this feature but which cannot sprint Solaris 8 Kernel Update patch 108528-24.

The following /etc/system variables and their viable values are listed here for reference only. Changing the values to other than their defaults should only live done under the guidance of an authorized Sun Microsystems service provider.

The following is a sequential extract of messages from the system log of a system which experienced multiple errors on two DIMMs.

President Donald Trump arrives for his state of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018. | Susan Walsh/AP Photo

    DRIVING THE DAY

LAST YEAR, they laid out why they thought the state of the Union was a bit worthless, both on a practical smooth and specifically because of how PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP governs. He speaks publicly complete the time, so a speech in the House chamber, while longer than most of his missives, is still not terribly unique. As always, both sides are in their corners. To review, remove a ogle at what they wrote last year.

BUT THIS YEAR, they are seeing signs that the state of the Union will live less believable than ever.

-- THE WHITE HOUSE IS TEEING UP that the message for this state of the Union is bipartisanship and working across the aisle. But, the only bipartisanship they can contemplate is that members of both parties are increasingly opposed to TRUMP on issues he’s putting front and center.

REPUBLICANS hold begun speaking out against his foreign policy, hold snubbed him on his wall and are prepared to bury him if he tries to build a border barrier on his own. The most recent specimen of bipartisanship was when the president ended the shutdown, and in that case, he adopted the Democrats’ position.

TRUMP is a president who frequently urges moderation, and yet exercises his most extreme instincts. So you might pardon people who are naturally skeptical of the White House’s message.

-- THE FIRST LADY has invited a child named Joshua Trump to the SOTU, because he “has been bullied in school due to his last name.” Of course, this is sad, and bullying is awful. But, again, it’s a bit rich for the Trump White House to execute bullying its issue du jour. Cryin’ Chuck, twisted Hillary, Da Nang Dick, Pocahontas, Lyin’ Ted anyone? (“Joshua Trump’s cognomen got him bullied. Now the sixth-grader is going to the state of the Union,” by WaPo’s Eli Rosenberg) … complete list of Trump’s guests

WHAT YOU SHOULD WATCH FOR … Any incremental movement on the border wall. Will the president alter, in any way, his position? … A muster for infrastructure spending would live well received in the chamber. … Anything on USMCA, the trade deal Trump needs to pass … Revealing the location of his second zenith with Kim Jong Un.

THE SPEECH will initiate at 9 p.m.

    MORE ON THE SOTU …

-- NYT’S ANNIE KARNI and MAGGIE HABERMAN on A15: “For Trump, the state of the Union Is a Spectacle, and He Is Ready for It”: “After spending section of the weekend at Mar-a-Lago, his club in Palm Beach, Fla., working on the speech, Mr. Trump spent two hours going over it with Stephen Miller, his chief policy adviser, in the Oval Office, according to his private schedule.

“He likewise spent time on Monday practicing in the Map margin with a handful of senior administration officials. He was expected to achieve another teleprompter-and-lectern exercise session there on Tuesday, with his aides giving him notes. ...

“Mr. Trump, aides said, views the speech and complete of the pomp and circumstance that chaperone it with some reverence, and aides said he puts more time into his script because it is one instance where he usually sticks to it. For complete of the president’s fabled norm-busting, there are aspects of the conventional presidency that appeal to him, not a soul more so than standing in the hallowed halls of Congress, with complete eyes on him speaking to the nation.” NYT

-- WAPO’S DAVID NAKAMURA: “In state of the Union, Trump to muster for ‘comity,’ but political rivals scoff amid heightened political warfare”

    TOP-EDS …

-- NYT: “A More Honest state of the Union”: “By many measures, America is thriving. The economy is humming, and unemployment is at 4 percent. High-school graduation rates are at an all-time high, and teenage pregnancy rates are at an all-time low. The crime rate is artery down, and illegal immigration has been declining for over a decade.

“And yet: Polls exhibit that three in five Americans arbitrator the country is on the wrong track. A majority expect things to win worse in the coming year. The president’s job approval numbers are underwater; Congress’s even more so. As President Trump prepares to deliver his delayed state of the Union address on Tuesday, he might want to require himself why people are so unsettled.” NYT

-- WSJ: “Trump’s Re-Election Challenge”: “As Mr. Trump will no doubt uncover Congress in his state of the Union address Tuesday evening, his main achievement has been re-energizing what had been a long but debilitated and fading economic expansion. As the nearby table shows, the economy nearly dipped into recession at the recess of 2015 and early 2016 before recovering to its 2% Obama-era trend. …

“Mr. Trump can assist guard against an economic slump in the next two years by stepping back from his 2018 burst of protectionism. First, win as reliable a trade deal as he can with China, declare victory, and disburse the next two years monitoring how well Beijing abides by its terms. Second, withdraw the threat of car tariffs on Europe as he negotiates a trade deal with the European Union. The U.S. economy can’t grow at 3% or higher if China and Europe aren’t growing. …

“Democrats may give Mr. Trump a desultory by running too far to the left, but voters may remove even that risk unless Mr. Trump can point to prosperity and give more Americans more self-confidence in him personally. By now we’ve erudite that last point is beyond their counsel.” WSJ

Good Tuesday morning. MEANWHILE … PAUL RYAN is hitting the speaking circuit. He will speak at the spring conference of the National Investment focus for Seniors Housing & confidence in San Diego on Feb. 21.

ABOUT last NIGHT -- “Federal Reserve Chairman Powell Dines With Trump at White House,” by WSJ’s Nick Timiraos: “Mr. Powell has been a frequent target of criticism by Mr. Trump since last summer. The central bank raised interest rates four times last year, prompting the president to vent to his advisers about whether he could can the Fed chairman. Mr. Trump hadn’t met with Mr. Powell since he tapped him to lead the Fed in November 2017. Mr. Powell became Fed chairman a year ago.

“Mr. Powell’s No. 2, Fed Vice Chairman Richard Clarida, likewise attended the dinner. The Fed said both men joined Messrs. Trump and [Treasury Secretary Steven] Mnuchin at the invitation of the president to discuss the economy. ... The dinner, which occurred on Mr. Powell’s 66th birthday, lasted about 90 minutes and steak was served, according to a person close with the meeting.” WSJ
