Donald went on to glean a BA at Carleton College, a BS in mechanical engineering at Washington University, and an MBA at the University of Chicago. He joined Monsanto, the agribusiness giant, in 1977 as a salesman in its industrial chemical division. "At first people assumed that I didn't know what I was doing--they assumed I was a token." But by 1995 he was leading the company's $4 billion agriculture business, a star black executive in a lily-white industry. He was considered the leading contender to hasten the company. "As an African-American woman I was really going against the grain," she says.
