The son of a construction worker, Richard studied electronics for two years at the University of Houston with the aim of working in the computer industry. He left IBM, in 1978, to join Texas Instruments, which hired him to repair integrated-circuit test systems. The challenge Allen-Bradley set for itself in developing EMS was formidable. The company offers 50 different product lines, and each would require several different boards of varying size and configuration.
