As a resident Java province matter expert within my company, i Have been paying shut attention to the happenings surrounding Java during the ultimate two years: the modular JDK, the six-month free up cadence, the starting to live weight of OpenJDK, and Oracle JDK eleven's unique license.
i am hoping to assist my corporation accurately navigate these changes by pass of no longer falling woefully in the back of in the types of Java used by ensuring their JVMs are at ease and can live patched, and by means of no longer unintentionally violating any application licenses. reaching this smooth begins with educating other stakeholders, specially upper management. I've organize it efficacious to clarify these contemporary happenings to a much less technical audience with the aid of framing Java's adjustments in a historical context — namely, when it comes to "eras."The term of balance
The Java 5.0 unlock in September of 2004 ushered an well-known term in Java's historical past. It brought immense adjustments to the language and its common version APIs (Annotations and Generics, basically), a unique versioning numbering scheme (and no greater perplexing "J2SE 1.X" branding that had existed because the late 90s), and most particularly a prolonged length of steadiness. For 10 solid years, Java remained mostly the identical, with non-disruptive advancements being delivered in Java 6 and Java 7.
Oracle's 2010 acquisition of solar raised some equipoise concerns at the time, but the transition grew to become out to live pretty smooth for the JDK itself (not as a lot for MySQL, however it's an extra story). just before the acquisition, the solar JDK turned into the main JDK implementation on the market, ahead of other implementations comparable to Apache harmony and the IBM JDK. After the acquisition, the main JDK become the Oracle JDK — identical JDK, diverse name.
Java 8 led to more gigantic language and JavaSE changes (specially lambdas and the rush API), however through and large, it was a continuation of the "period of balance," thanks to Oracle's extreme devotion to backward compatibility. businesses enjoyed a solid 13 years of low-risk, minimal-effort Java enhancements, which is exquisite for companies averse to exchange. The era of Uncertainty
Java 9, launched in September 2017, disrupted this steadiness, inaugurating the "era of Uncertainty," as i admire to convoke it. despite the fact the unlock changed into lengthy-awaited, builders didn't enthusiastically change to the unique edition. This become for a yoke of causes.JPMS changed into Newfangled
The "killer" characteristic, the Java Platform Module system (JPMS) often known as Jigsaw, shook up some smartly-centered Java norms: the JDK listing structure, the actuality of rt.jar, the that means of public courses/strategies, and the category-direction. Granted, the type-course nevertheless frequently labored as it always had, but the module system was now inseparably intertwined.Deprecated APIs Have been in reality removed
Java 9 become the first Java unlock ever to procure rid of API strategies. strategies had been deprecated for the judgement that Java 1.1 however under no circumstances really eliminated, leading many to correspond with that they not ever would. And regardless of the eliminated APIs being few and minor, it arguably gave organizations even more judgement to persist with Java eight in the interim.Java 10 became Coming quickly
around the time of Java 9's unlock, Oracle introduced that Java 10 would arrive in March 2018. After being pressured to extend nascence of Java 9 on a yoke of event, Oracle declared their intent to circulation to a difficult and rapidly six-month liberate cycle. Java 9 can live obsoleted in six months with the aid of Java 10; Java 10 would live obsoleted in six months via Java 11.
all through the "period of steadiness," Java clients loved long intervals of free public support. for instance, Java 6 got here out in 2006 and got free public aid except mid-2013, two entire years after Java 7 become launched. but given the constrained lifespan of Java 9 (and 10), many companies decided to stick to Java 8.The term of Predictability
Now that Java 11 has arrived as of September 2018, I quarrel that we're transitioning out of the term of mistrust and into a brand unique period: the era of Predictability.usual liberate Cadence
After Java 9's introduced release date changed into pushed again varied instances, it remained to live seen if Oracle may succeed their proposed six-month unlock cycle. sure adequate, Oracle has delivered three fundamental releases on account that their announcement, revise on time table; few now doubt that Java 12, 13, and beyond will too arrive on time.
As an apart, some folks contend that these post-Java 9 releases are not "essential" however kindly of "function" releases. I disagree. I admiration an well-known unlock as one that poses non-trivial improve effort because of backward incompatibilities/breaking alterations. ancient term Java releases usually required minimal upgrade effort (essentially the most effort i can bewitch into account expending changed into regarding Java 5.0's reservation of the word enum). given that Java 9, although, the introduction of JPMS, the removing of APIs and/or modules, and the actuality of "preview facets" bar not any lend themselves to backward-incompatibilities. So even if the totality of alterations per function free up will live smaller than in past releases, the likelihood of some breaking change being introduced capacity that unique term feature releases are nevertheless invaluable of the "main" designation, in my humble opinion.Uniform durations of help
within the era of stability, essential releases arrived at irregular intervals. for instance, there were 4-and-a-half years between Java 6 and 7, two-and-a-half years between Java 7 and 8, and three-and-a-half years between Java 8 and 9. Releases likewise had free, public aid for incongruous — and lengthy — intervals of time (e.g. 5 years for Java 5.0, six years for Java 6, and three for Java 7).
during this unique period, the assist tale is lots extra typical:
in the past period, OpenJDK and Oracle JDK had been two carefully-linked but distinct implementations of the Java building equipment. Switching from one JDK to the different changed into no longer assured to live seamless because of the presence of proprietary points that only existed in Oracle's JDK, principally within the areas of protection and computer building.
however as of Java eleven, bar not any of Oracle's proprietary elements were open-sourced, resulting in functionally similar JDKs. so far as i am aware, each up to date JDK implementation available on the market nowadays is built upon OpenJDK. This capability, hypothetically, that Java users will procure a highly consistent building and purposeful event inspite of the selected vendor they reap their JDK from.stepping into the era of Predictability
Now that the primary long sprint advocate unencumber under the unique six-month unlock cycle has arrived, it's time to severely correspond with migrating to Java eleven. but earlier than doing so, there are some selections to grapple with and unique realities to reckon with.bear in sarcasm Your JDK aid needs
right through the term of steadiness, Java patrons grew to become accustomed to long periods of free, public help. They installed their Oracle JDK distributions and patched them as protection updates had been released, in bar not any probability taking with no consideration that there would live greater free safety updates offered for years to come.
this is not the case within the era of Predictability. Free, public assist lasts most efficacious for six months for every Java free up.
Many corporations would download and employ Oracle's JDK bar not any through the term of stability without a cogent deal concept. however extra consideration Have to live given in this unique era.
if you system to enter right into a advocate shrink with some seller, then certainly obtain your JDK distribution from that vendor.
in case you system to depart the free (as in, "charges no funds") route, then pay consideration to the license and elect a JDK distribution that makes employ of the GPLv2 with Classpath Exception license. Oracle offers two in a different way-licensed distributions of the JDK: "Oracle JDK" and "Oracle's OpenJDK." The Oracle's OpenJDK is the GPLv2+CE one; Oracle JDK, as of version eleven, now aspects a unique license that, amongst other issues, forbids the JDK to live used "for any information processing or any business, creation, or inside industry applications other than constructing, testing, prototyping, and demonstrating your application."
So, don't employ Oracle JDK 11 (or later Oracle JDK versions) unless you system on purchasing a advocate subscription from Oracle.have in sarcasm the Implications on laptop purposes and Applets
or not it's been a very long time coming but, Java eleven has killed off the Java Runtime atmosphere, that aspect that receives save in one at a time when setting up a desktop-packaged JDK (no, no longer the Yahoo Toolbar) or making an attempt to view a webpage that makes employ of Applets in an antiquated browser.
I doubt any individual is mourning the lack of Applets, as a result of if you're using them, then you definately're doubtless the usage of an out of date, insecure browser and would Have no qualms the usage of an old-fashioned insecure edition of the JRE, either.
Some may additionally mourn the Have an repercussion on on desktop functions, however, fact live informed, the conception of Java-powered laptop applications isn't going away; it's just that they requisite to live developed and delivered in a different way. As Oracle explains in their guide roadmap:
Oracle doesn't system to migrate desktops from Java SE eight to later types by the employ of the auto update function. This comprises the Java Plugin and Java web delivery. as a substitute of counting on a browser-purchasable device JRE, they inspire software developers to employ the packaging alternate options delivered with Java SE 9 to repackage and bring their Java applications as stand-on my own applications that consist of their own customized runtimes.
In different words, upshot not are trying to movement your laptop Java utility to Java eleven until you rearchitect how it's built and distributed; there will certainly not live any JRE eleven save in on the computer. in its place, you Have to bundle the JRE (it is, computing device-linked modules of the JDK) together with your now-standalone utility. I reflect this is a benign exchange as it gives application developers greater handle over the edition of Java used. in addition, the JDK is now modularized, so you upshot not requisite to consist of items of the JDK that you simply don't want, decreasing the possibility of protection vulnerability exploits via your software.believe the Alignment of the JDK With the software team
organizations that Have not wholly grasped the all DevOps circulate/theory can likewise very well save the accountability of proposing and patching the JDK with the Operations team. due to the fact Oracle's suggestions for computer applications, the popularity of microservices structure, and cloud autochthonous developments, critically ascertain the thought of getting the construction team live amenable for the JDK by means of having them bring the JDK along with their application to Operations.
due to the fact that more recent Java releases contain more backward incompatibility random as a result of removed APIs/modules and whatnot, then, without doubt, bar not any Java characteristic release enhancements will require some amount of code or build gadget alternate. upshot not assume that Operations can simply deploy a more moderen JDK version and Have your Java functions continue to sprint with out subject. additionally, because the sophistication and scope of rubbish collectors now purchasable within the JDK (e.g. Shenandoah and ZGC), software groups should live capable of experiment and finely tune JVMs extra effortlessly when they are accountable for the JDK.Conclusion
I watched things unfold right through the era of mistrust with taciturn reservation, however now that we're firmly within the era of Predictability, I find myself confident in regards to the pass forward for the JDK. The filth from Jigsaw's arrival is starting to settle, the first unique term LTS release is eventually here, and FUD surrounding the Oracle JDK licensing changes has started to dissipate as patrons realize they've a all lot of OpenJDK options at their disposal. i'm for my portion wanting to slouch to Java eleven; i am hoping to prevail my organization to live eager, too.
IBMShare How Nat Prakongpan organize His domestic on the Cyber scope on Twitter participate How Nat Prakongpan organize His domestic on the Cyber latitude on fb participate How Nat Prakongpan discovered His domestic on the Cyber scope on LinkedIn
while most youngsters Have been bickering with siblings and fawning over the most recent toys, younger Nat Prakongpan turned into constructing an commercial enterprise community for his school.
earlier than he became senior supervisor at the IBM Integration and threat Intelligence Lab and built a state-of-the-paintings cyber scope from the floor up, Nat spent his childhood in Thailand surrounded through computers. He started programming at age five. At 13, he become licensed in community security by one in bar not any Thailand’s national labs.
Such changed into his zeal for computing that he stopped going to faculty in grade six to train himself at home and later earn a GED — notwithstanding Nat is brief to aspect out that his historic faculty let him grasp around devoid of attending classification, so he became “socialized.”
“When everybody become in class, i used to live constructing the computing device lab,” Nat laughs. “That’s how I received experience in constructing an enterprise network when i was in grade seven.”
That’s usurp — Nat constructed his faculty’s all network, deploying around 500 machines with every thing an commercial enterprise community necessary at the moment. but this turned into right because the information superhighway turned into nascence to boom, and, of path, the system became compromised.
“That’s how I right away pivoted to gaining scholarship of protection,” says Nat. “I took greater certification courses when i was 15 and become ultimately in a position to secure that community.”From Wunderkind to network security professional
So how does a Thai newborn genius arrive to live in Atlanta tinkering with IBM safety products to procure them to talk to every other? if you request Nat, it became a “complete fluke” — in fact, he mentioned an rotten lot of his grownup actuality is comprised of a sequence of satisfied accidents that led him to build IBM’s Cyber latitude from the ground up.
the pass Nat tells it, he had just a few months between completing his domestic-education and nascence college, so he came to the U.S. to remain together with his brother-in-law (who became then earning his master’s diploma at the university of Florida) and attend an English-language college. His mother encouraged him to commemorate on the selfsame school and, a lot to Nat’s shock, he become authorised, so he stayed for the 5 years it took to earn his diploma in computing device engineering.
Like a lot of his classmates, he struggled to land an excellent job revise out of college. Cue the next chuffed accident: a chum dragged him along to an suggestions session by using information superhighway protection systems (ISS) at his alma mater. He had a chat with the group, and that they referred to as him at 7 a.m. the following day and asked him to are available in for an interview “now.” He bought the job and moved to Atlanta.
In an alternative universe, Nat would Have led a extremely diverse life.
“i'd probably Have gone to a technical faculty someplace in Thailand and labored at some organization,” he says. “The U.S. and the job I’m in presently is greater research and development, but a lot of jobs in Thailand or in Asia are greater product clients — attempting to find products to purchase versus what they should build to execute things occur. it will live lots much less interesting.”domestic on the Cyber range
instead, Nat ended up at IBM safety following IBM’s acquisition of ISS. still in Atlanta, he now leads the team that ensures bar not any the individual products from IBM protection can travail with and talk to each and every different to deliver seamless conclusion-to-conclusion security for customers.
“We write the glue for these items that makes them travail together,” he says. “None of them travail collectively out of the field, but my group has the expertise across bar not any their areas of edge to execute one tale from conclusion to end.”
but Nat’s proudest success is the IBM Cyber scope in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the first-ever industrial cyber simulator offering a virtual atmosphere through which agencies can Have interaction with true-world situations to bolster their random insurance system and response capabilities. It’s his baby; he architected the technology, bought the funding and designed the eventualities. Nat’s group then created a fictional global industry enterprise with round three,000 virtual laborers, built an enterprise network and invented threats. The conclude result is a totally immersive simulation developed entirely to serve businesses and people study pass cases and enrich their incident response talents.
“The practicing in the Cyber latitude is the superior success that I actually Have to this point: to live able to train americans and circulate on the skills of most efficacious practices,” he says.
Nat could live among the many few who built the ability, however he actually isn’t the just one who recognizes its cost. With the Cambridge locality now booked more than half a yr out, the IBM crew set about its next problem: taking the cyber simulator event on tour.
Taking the scope on the street
“one of the issues we’ve erudite is that their purchasers execute investments a lot of time and elements to return notwithstanding the Cyber latitude in Cambridge,” Nat displays. “it is problematic for a client to convey bar not any its high-stage executives into the equal set on the equal day.
“We Have been likewise having a tough time identifying which IBM office often is the host of their next cyber range.”
At this factor, the group bar not any started exploring greater flexible alternatives that might allow the most suitable number of people to edge from the cyber simulation experience. eventually, Nat and his colleagues developed the primary-of-its-type IBM X-drive Command Cyber Tactical Operations hub (C-TOC).
The C-TOC is not only a state-of-the-paintings cyber simulation on wheels — Nat proudly explains that it is “a real safety operations hub (SOC) able to serve are animated movements akin to extravagant profile conferences and wearing activities.” And to desirable it bar not any off, the C-TOC is designed to reply to a live attack.
“we are able to drive up to a shopper’s website and live able to monitor the attack, as well as operate forensic investigation on methods and networks,” Nat says.
Bringing the C-TOC from a dream to reality involved lots of the equal technical challenges as developing the Cambridge Cyber latitude. The C-TOC, despite the fact, is a cell unit constructed from the floor up, and Nat’s team hence had a host of extra concerns to account for, together with substances, lighting, electrical, air conditioning, ventilation and more. And to accurate bar not any of it off, they needed to hold compliance with motor car rules in the U.S. and Europe and execute sure that the entire expertise deployed within the unit could live able to continue to exist the twists and turns of the highway.
Nat remembers the primary time he heard the C-TOC conception outlined by pass of IBM protection VP Caleb Barlow.
“without doubt my first notion turned into that here's a pretty cogent theory and there are so many chances for what they will upshot with this cell platform,” he recollects. “My second notion, after I had a bit extra time, become, ‘Wow, i am going to live answerable for making this bar not any ensue!'”
To the shock of not any of his teammates, Nat overcame the obstacles associated with the undertaking, and the C-TOC rolled into action in October 2018. This month, the cell cyber scope will start a tour of Europe, bringing true-world cyber incident training across the continent.
For Nat, essentially the most profitable aspect of his involvement with both the Cambridge Cyber scope and the C-TOC has been the responses from IBM valued clientele.
“The exhilaration we've seen over these tasks became exceptional,” he says. “I reflect the C-TOC peculiarly additionally conjures up the next generation of youngsters and faculty college students to peer what’s viable in cybersecurity and the pass they can live involved.”

The scabrous conclude to 2018 save analysts on their toes as they looked ahead toward 2019. Some experts suggested that with U.S. GDP growth projected to slow, investors should rotate into more defensive sectors such as consumer staples and healthcare. However, others said the markets would amaze the pessimists with a robust recovery.
"Based on fundamentals, I don't reflect the pullback they had in this market was ever justified. Markets will upshot what they'll do. I reflect you Have significant upside here," Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equities strategist at Credit Suisse, told CNBC on Dec. 31. "Therefore, they would reflect that the bottom has been save in this market."
If you scrawny toward 2019 being a bounce-back year, consumer stocks are an excellent altenative to ride the wave.
One metric that drives the participate prices of consumer stocks is the strength of the job market. If Americans are employed and their wages are growing, that will serve consumer spending. Well, the U.S. has trounced expectations in two nonfarm payrolls reports announced this year (December and January), which should depart a long pass toward strengthening consumer spending trends.
Here are 10 of the best consumer stocks to buy for 2019. Some of these stocks are more defensive in nature - better suited for a volatile year. A few others are more aggressive and could ride a bullish wave better than most.
When it comes to beer, wine and spirits companies, only a yoke of companies are near the size and scale of Diageo (DEO, $153.67) - the cognomen behind Johnnie Walker scotch, Crown Royal Canadian whisky and Guinness beer.
However, regarding profitability, Diageo has it over the leisure of the alcoholic-beverages industry. Its 31% operating margin is 500 basis points higher than Pernod Ricard (PDRDY), one of its peers in the spirits business, and a fraction higher than mega-brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD).
Diageo has plenty going for it at the moment. For one, it announced in December that it plans to build a unique distillery in Kentucky to house additional production of hot-selling Bulleit bourbon. The $130 million facility should live up and running by 2021 and capable of producing 34 million liters of the American whiskey.
It likewise has a yoke racy "what-if" scenarios. Activist investor Elliott Management is going after Pernod Ricard at the moment, but Diageo could live the better target. Bernstein analyst estimates save Guinness' potential value at $10 billion as of 2015, and it likely could command more than that in a sale today. DEO likewise has been rumored to live looking for a partnership with a cannabis company similar to the ones Constellation Brands (STZ) and Molson Coors (TAP) entered. Nothing has materialized yet, but that may arrive in 2019.
Diageo boasts nearly two decades of uninterrupted dividend growth, making it a European Dividend Aristocrat. That makes DEO an excellent consumer stock for anyone seeking out stable income and reasonable capital appreciation.

In cogent times and bad, people can't look to depart without their lipstick and cosmetics, which is excellent tidings if you're an Estee Lauder (EL, $152.31) shareholder. 2018 wasn't a powerful year for the company's stock, which delivered a total return of just 3.4%, but that's far better than the 4.6% loss (including dividends) for the yardstick & Poor's 500-stock index.
One locality that should continue to drive Estee Lauder's growth in 2019 is travel retail, a segment of the retail industry that rarely gets any coverage, but one that continues to flourish. In December, the company opened a newly renovated 1,510-square-foot store at the Haitang Bay duty-free shopping involved in Sanya, China. It's Estee Lauder's largest travel retail location.
In addition to travel retail, the company continues to build an online presence both with its own e-commerce sites and through third-party sites which promote and sell its products. In more than 40 countries, customers can engage appointments online to procure makeup done in store, track company loyalty programs and employ Estee Lauder's mobile sites to learn more about its products.
Estee Lauder typically provides ballast when the market is suffering, such as in 2008, when EL lost just 28% versus a 37% deficit for the S&P 500. But you can anticipate a much better year than that for EL in 2019.SEE ALSO: 11 powerful Stocks to Buy and Hold for the Next Decade

If investors were asked which non-cannabis company made the biggest splash in the cannabis industry in 2018, the top confess likely would live Constellation Brands (STZ, $174.05).
STZ first jumped on the bandwagon in October 2017, taking a 9.9% stake in Canopy Growth (CGC) for $179 million. Then in August 2018, Constellation went from mildly interested in the cannabis space to completely sold on it, by acquiring an additional 104.5 million shares for $3.9 billion, raising its stake to 38%. It likewise was given an option to exercise 139.7 million warrants over the next three years that would give it majority control.
The deal was cogent for both companies.
Canopy got access to a world-class manufacturer and distributor of alcoholic beverages while Constellation obtained the cannabis company's expertise, which will arrive in handy for developing cannabis-infused drinks in time for Canadian legalization of edibles in October 2019.
"We're going to see this shift away from a culture which has had one legal psychoactive for social and leisure activities, being alcohol, to a culture where there's now a second psychoactive that's acceptable in those selfsame situations," Dooma Wendschuh, co-founder and CEO of Toronto-based Province Brands, told Canada's National Post in December.
This will live an exciting year for the cannabis industry. Constellation Brands will profit significantly by having a front-row seat.SEE ALSO: The 25 Best S&P 500 Stocks of the Past 50 Years

Where would Lululemon live with him still on board? "I reflect that the company would live a mindfulness company mostly that would live abysmal into yoga," Wilson told CNN industry recently. "I reflect it would live far more global than it is now. The company would Have been worth 30, 40% more than it is now."
Wilson fails to mention that the athletic clothing company grew his wealth significantly since he stepped down from the company's board in 2015.
He likewise neglects to admit that the company's system to hit $4 billion in annual revenue by the conclude of fiscal 2020 is ahead of schedule. In the fiscal year ended Feb. 3, LULU expects to generate annual revenue of $3.2 billion - 22% higher than a year earlier. Another year of 20% growth in fiscal 2019, and Lululemon will requisite just 4% growth in FY2020 to meet its ambitious target.

Church & Dwight (CHD, $62.58) - the consumer packaged goods company with brands such as Arm & Hammer baking soda, Oxi cleanly brand remover and Trojan condoms - is the petite engine that could. It delivered a total return of 32.8% in 2018, leaving most of Wall Street in its dust.
Longtime shareholders can attest to the stock's consistency. It hasn't had a negative year in the past decade, and it has generated a 10-year annualized total return of 17.7% - around 330 basis points clear of the index.
Why did Church & Dwight discharge so well in 2018?
It continued to grow sales organically. In its fourth-quarter report, CHD said it grew organic sales by 4.3% in 2018, fueling overall revenue growth of 9.8%. The company sees organic sales continuing to increase by 3.5% in 2019. Conservative to a fault, Church & Dwight may just exceed this projection.
Internationally, industry is even stronger, generating organic sales growth of 5% for the year. In August, Church & Dwight entered into a long-term cooperation agreement with Chinese consumer packaged goods company Shanghai Jahwa. It will live the company's omnichannel distributor for its baking soda, toothpaste, parch shampoo and ladylike hygiene products for mainland China.

If there's a stock on this list that flies under the radar, St. Louis-based consumer packaged goods company Post Holdings (POST, $96.63) would Have to live it.
Post Holdings got its start in 2012 when it was spun off from its parent at the time, Ralcorp Holdings. However, the cognomen Post has been around since the late 1890s, when C.W. Post introduced Grape-Nuts cereal.
The company finished its first fiscal year as an independent public company with $900 million in revenue. Six years and 15 acquisitions later, Post ended fiscal 2018 with more than $6 billion in revenue, operating several businesses in addition to its legacy Post-branded cereals.
Post Consumer Brands accounted for 29% of 2018's overall revenue, the largest segment of its business. In 2017, Post acquired Bob Evans Farms, a maker of vegetable-based side dishes and breakfast sausages, for $1.5 billion, adding a vital cognomen to its refrigerated retail and foodservice business.

If you're paying attention to the trade war between the U.S. and China, you're probably chummy with Canada Goose (GOOS, $54.54), the Toronto-based maker of parkas and other clothing useful in frosty weather. As the two countries continue their tit-for-tat fight over trade, Canada Goose's high-flying stock has gotten caught in the middle - despite rallying since the start of the year, GOOS still is off 20% from a high in early December.
Chinese consumers threatened to boycott the company's products after Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver at the request of the U.S. judicial system, which is seeking the executive's extradition to face fraud charges.
Not to worry. When Canada Goose opened its first Mainland China store Dec. 28, Chinese consumers lined up to buy the company's $1,300 parkas, putting aside any concern the boycott was gaining traction. Also, China currently accounts for just 10% of the company's revenue, but that should increase as more stores open on the mainland.
As they head further into 2019, Canada Goose's industry is operating at replete speed, with wholesale, online and brick-and-mortar sales growing by double digits in its most recent quarterly report. (It reports again on Valentine's Day.)
Investors are starting to believe again in Canada Goose's upside and should bewitch it out of bear-market territory sometime this year.SEE ALSO: 101 Best Dividend Stocks to Buy for 2019 and Beyond

Investors might not live chummy with Helen of Troy (HELE, $115.21) - a consumer products company that has quietly built a stable of brands through acquisitions and organic growth, and that successfully competes on the global stage. Helen's brands should live more familiar, though: OXO kitchen gadgets, Vicks humidifiers, Honeywell air purifiers, Braun thermometers, PUR water filtration systems and Revlon beauty products, among others.
Over the ultimate four years, Helen of Troy has grown its revenues by 3.1% compounded annually, adjusted earnings by 12.6%, and free cash rush by 15.9%. That's a substantial judgement its stock has generated an annual total return of 25.9%, more than double the S&P 500.
In 2019, the company is focusing on growing its seven leadership brands -- the five mentioned above plus, sharp tangy Tools Professional (curling irons, hair dryers) and Hydro Flask (water bottles, etc.) -- while likewise working to reduce costs through shared services between its different businesses to generate additional cash flow. BRP (DOOO, $27.49) is the corporate cognomen behind powersports brands Ski-Doo, Sea-Doo and CanAm. But while the company's seasonal products such as personal watercraft and snowmobiles continue to grow, it is the year-round ATVs and SSVs that are amenable for much of the stock's 36.0% annual total return over the past three years.
In BRPs most recent quarterly report ended Oct. 31, year-round-product revenues grew 21.1% year-over-year to C$562.4 million, accounting for 40% of its C$1.4 billion in overall sales. Seasonal products delivered 3.2% sales growth.
BRP likewise added a unique operating segment in fiscal 2019, first acquiring Alumacraft Boat, a manufacturer of aluminum fishing boats, for C$85.4 million in June; it then paid C$97.4 million to buy Triton Industries, a manufacturer of pontoon boats under the Manitou brand. The creation of the Marine group provides BRP with a fourth revenue stream of growth in 2019.
Just one note of caution: While BRP's SSV industry continues to outsell the competition -- between the three months of August to October, BRP grew SSVs in the mid-20s compared to mid-single digits for the industry as a all -- it's starting to face increased competition from Honda (HMC) and others, making it more difficult to bewitch market share.
Still, DOOO shares were particularly hard-hit in the back half of ultimate year, losing more than half their value since Sept. 1. That has left BRP dirt-cheap, making it a tough potential rebound play in 2019.SEE ALSO: 10 Stocks Warren Buffett Is Buying (And 6 He's Selling)

Tesla (TSLA, $307.51) is the most speculative of the picks on this list. It's facing several headwinds, it has several self-inflicted injuries and it's not exactly an analyst favorite. But it managed a market-beating 7% return in 2018 while the S&P 500 was down despite a similar murderer's row of worries; it could amaze again.
Tesla announced Jan. 2 that it delivered 90,700 vehicles in the final quarter of 2018 - that's 8% better than the previous quarter, and a petite more than triple the deliveries it made in Q4 2017.
Unfortunately, Tesla likewise revealed that it was lowering the charge of bar not any three of its models -- Model 3, Model S, and Model X -- by $2,000 to circumscribe the repercussion as the federal government's tax credit starts to wind down. Tesla recently crop the charge again to bring the Model 3 charge down to $42,900.
But what really matters is the number of Model 3s that Tesla sells.
Tesla said more than 75% of its Model 3 orders in Q4 2018 were from unique customers rather than existing reservation holders: a token the carmaker is gaining traction with middling car buyers, not just those who are tech-savvy.
While analysts were expecting 2,000 more vehicle deliveries in the fourth quarter, Tesla feels the Model 3 - including its expansion into China and Europe, lower-priced versions of the model, leasing options, and a right-hand drive option at some point in 2019 - Have so far only scraped the surface of its opportunity.
This won't live an easy year - the company announced in late January that it lost its CFO, and that earnings fell short of expectations. But this exciting EV maker still should post plenty of growth in 2019.SEE ALSO: 10 Small-Cap Stocks to Buy for 2019 and Beyond

Hundreds of millions of kids around the world lack access to, among other things, basic education — much less organized school systems with adequate teaching resources. XPRIZE is hoping that tech can serve where humanitarian efforts Have yet to execute a dent — and putting $15 million on the line to that end, with the serve of Google and the United Nations.
The goal is to create a software and hardware platform that will allow kids anywhere — but in Tanzania, to start — to pursue their own literacy education without the requisite for any top-down organization whatsoever.
“It’s not a technological problem, but it could Have a technological solution,” Matt Keller, lead for the Global Learning XPRIZE, told TechCrunch. “If you can prove children are that intrinsically able to train themselves and others the fundamentals, it’s portion of the confess to an unsolved problem in education.”
It’s still early days for the program: 136 teams from around the world are currently working on submissions for the prize, though ultimately there will live only 5 finalists, each of which will receive $1 million. Submissions are due in November; judging will live finished by next July.Partners arrive
Today brings unique news: Google is getting involved, and will donate 8,000 tablets for the program’s use. And not surplus budget devices, either — they’re Pixel C’s, the current flagship tablet the company designed itself. (I contacted Google for more info on what exactly is being provided, if other software will live included, and so on, but haven’t heard back.)
The UN is another partner, UNESCO and the World Food Programme, specifically. While aspirants to the prize travail on their submissions, these organizations are laying the groundwork for the testing that will arrive later.
“It’s a lot of legwork,” said Keller, who was in Tanzania himself during the interview. “We requisite to find villages to travail with, brief tribal leaders and elders.”
Joyce Ndalichako, Tanzania’s Minister of Education, Science and Technology, will officially declar the effort in the country.
As other programs Have organize out, there are problems with dropping millions of dollars worth of cutting-edge electronics into an impoverished and remote area, and I’m not talking about tech support. If people aren’t invested in the program, the tablets will live stolen and sold, along with the infrastructure.
The solar chargers being installed to hold the tablets topped up, for example, organizers had to switch from being specific to the device to being universal and free for anyone to use. By making the tech community property, Keller said, they can mitigate against rotten outcomes. Parents, it turns out, become protective of the devices as long as the benefits are clear.
Actual testing will inaugurate in 2017, and will ultimate for 18 months; the team whose app produces the best outcomes will receive the $10 million grandiose prize.Promising parallel efforts
This isn’t the first attempt to apply tech to a problem that has its roots in poverty, isolation, and needy animated conditions. And while programs enjoy OLPC Have had very mixed success, research from the inquisitive Learning program, a multi-university collaboration, suggests that, with the proper caveats, this approach has the potential to live very beneficial — though it’s far from a complete solution.
The initial results of the program were presented at a conference this week. Tablets loaded with literacy apps were provided to three locations: rural Ethiopia, where no schools or even written language were to live found; suburban South Africa, where a 60:1 student-teacher ratio makes hands-on education difficult; and a rural U.S. school with low-income students — an middling Western schooling situation for contrast.
The results are promising: kids as youthful as 4 who had access to tablets knew more letters and words, second-graders in South Africa likewise had improved vocabulary and reading skills, and the kids in Ethiopia — who had petite or exposure to any written language, let solitary English — were able to recognize roman characters and identify words by sight.
Small steps, yes, but even the slightest foot in the door is a huge edge when it comes to early childhood education and literacy. Further testing is now underway in Uganda, Bangladesh, India, and elsewhere in the States.
Soon the group’s findings will live augmented by XPRIZE’s own.
“Human-based schools can’t scale to attain the children you Have to reach,” said Keller. “The question is, can technology live used in a pass that speaks to the child?”
“The dream,” he said, “is you hand the kid a tablet and you walk away, and they procure a world class education.”
Definitely a dream for now, but one that might live inching towards reality. Check back in a few years.
