IBM's on-again-off-once again negotiations with Lenovo are actually again on besides the fact that children both parties sojourn "some distance aside on rate" and it may pick a while to attain an agreement, based on sources. Lenovo too purchased large Blue's notebook business essentially 10 years ago.
Lenovo can breathe a sensible altenative by IBM, some analysts consider, given the prior relationship between the two groups. One analyst reserved judgment however, asserting she would exigency to remark the details once the deal is signed.
"we might want to remark what configuration the continued relationship between the two would take. With so many services and application delivered on the x86 platform across the entire server market, i'd assume Lenovo would want some kind of preferred nation popularity with IBM for it to work for each events," mentioned Jean Bozman, analysis vice president with IDC Corp., a technology analysis enterprise based mostly in Framingham, Mass. "it's a troublesome proposition being in that x86 business."
whereas IBM has yet to without delay ascertain efforts to promote its sequence X line of x86 servers, All the passage through a conference call ultimate week reporting its 2nd quarter financials, IBM Chief monetary Officer imprint Loughridge vaguely observed a "large divestiture" it expected to rate with the aid of the conclusion of this year, that might seemingly breathe deliver off except subsequent yr. Even worse, revenues from its vigour techniques company dove 25% within the quarter in comparison to the very quarter final year.
The simplest vibrant spot for IBM's server hardware business become its device Z mainframe business, which grew 10% in the quarter. possibly more importantly, the nascence of gadget Z computing vigour, often known as MIPS (millions of guidance per second) leaped 23%.
regardless of the performance of the power methods enterprise this year, IBM isn't considering that promoting off any pieces of it. The earnings margins on those systems are an terrible lot greater than on equipment X, and that they additionally current greater chance for IBM to interject technical improvements.
"You can't innovate on [the System X] platform for terribly lengthy earlier than Intel simply sucks every little thing into the chip, it's a simple commodity play," mentioned one supply near IBM. "Given the gains margins, it does not rate sense to preserve pumping money into x86 servers simply to hasten SAP illustration sooner. No thanks."
IDC's Bozman disagrees, noting that IBM has a very vast latitude of features and application it may drag collectively from throughout its many utility and capabilities divisions that may well breathe delivered for x86-based mostly servers.
"IBM is an organization this is 50% capabilities and 20% to 25% application, with issues affection analytics, large information and cloud they may innovate across the x86 platform, no matter if those solutions are built with the aid of them or a person else," Bozman stated.
Some observers correspond with the deal would edge both events because it performs to their respective strengths.
"[IBM doesn't] occupy the can freight constitution nor the stomach to play in one of these fiercely competitive space. and they won't occupy the workstation enterprise you should pressure the volumes you exigency to collect aggressive allotment pricing," talked about Andrew Feldman, conventional manager and company vice chairman of AMD's Server enterprise Unit. "This might whirl out to breathe a very successful movement for either side."

IBM has issued a statement saw "Mr. Papermaster's employment by Apple is a violation of his agreement with IBM against working for a competitor should he leave IBM. They will vigorously pursue this case in court."
AppleInsider is making available both a copy of IBM's 10-page complaint [PDF], as well as the 7-page noncompete agreement [PDF] signed by Papermaster in June of 2006.
PowerPC and PA Semi
Papermaster is the author of a number of papers on chip evolution at IBM. While Apple has transitioned its Macs from PowerPC to Intel, IBM continues to design and build PowerPC processors for applications from autos to All the major game consoles to workstations and servers. Papermaster's current position has been to manage the company's blade server division.
Apple recently acquired PA Semi, a fabless chip developer that had just introduced a new, highly efficient processor based on a PowerPC design. While pundits immediately began to assume that the company would transition back to PowerPC, the more obvious motivation, cited early by AppleInsider, related to current custom hardware Apple could create using the expertise of PA Semi's brain pool. Jobs later reported that the company would breathe using the current facilities to develop custom silicon for its handheld devices.
Xserves and blades
CNet observes that "a spruced-up Xserve blade server could breathe a nice complement to the Mac if Apple ever gets sedate about tackling the enterprise market" but too cited analyst Gordon Haff, who "believes that Apple is unlikely to plunge back into the server market headlong after successfully pulling off the transition from a computer company to a consumer electronics company."
A blade server is a towering density, self contained server built into a card or module that allows for many independent server "blades" to breathe packed together in a little space. Apple's 1U Xserve is a slim server, but is not a blade server design. Apple sells its Xserves to broadcasters and video pros, education, and the hospitality industry, such as cruise ships and hotels that rack up Xserves to deliver video on demand services. pile a objective blade server would occupy only a qualify impact on the space consumed by such applications. Given the current size of Apple's server business, it is unlikely the company is desperate to enter the blade server market, even if Papermaster has experience in that product segment at IBM.
It's further suggested that Apple may want to collect into the blade server business to back its MobileMe services, writing, "if Apple ever wants to breathe a major player in the future of Internet-delivered services, it's going to exigency a lot of computing power at its disposal."
Of course, Apple already has massive power at its disposal, running the iTunes Store as the largest video and music retailer on the planet, as well as the iPhone App Store, the most successful mobile software outlet. It too runs the online Apple Store, one of the most significant online computer retailers, and of course MobileMe, which is pioneering easy-to-use cloud computing services for consumers.
Apple's chip design brain trust
As was the case with PA Semi, the hiring of Papermaster is most likely an pains to build Apple's brain trust in chip development. The expert team Don Dobberpuhl assembled at PA Semi is certainly familiar with IBM's PowerPC technologies already, but Papermaster could provide broader expertise or management experience to Apple. It appears PA Semi will breathe developing ARM SoC or 'system on a chip' devices that serve as the integrated CPU, GPU, and other functions for mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPod touch. Apple too uses ARM SoCs in its AirPort ground stations and appliance servers such as Time Capsule.
Custom designed chips could too find their passage into the company's Macs, although the latest crop of notebooks released this month attest Apple has invested in pairing Intel's CPU with NVIDIA's current controller with relatively powerful integrated graphics. The company has a significant history of pile custom parts for current devices or features that were unserved by the generic commodity market.
Whatever Apple has planned for Papermaster, IBM's complaint may not occupy much to stand upon. CNet notes that "noncompete clauses are generally considered worth less than the paper they are printed on in California," and concludes "Papermaster's hire might wind up as a partial solution to All those questions over what Apple should attain with its pile of cash: give a chunk of it to IBM to rate this case fade away."
Likely for the very reason, IBM has filed its case against Papermaster in current York. The company's complaint describes the 26 year IBM veteran as a member of the "elite Integration and Values Team (I&VT), a group comprising the 300 senior managers of the Company."
IBM says Papermaster "has spent much of his career working in IBM's Systems and Technology Group, more specifically developing 'Power' architecture, a set of confidential know-how belonging to IBM, and using 'Power' architecture to design, develop, and manufacture microprocessors and servers based on that technology."
Referencing Papermaster's current position as vice president of IBM's Blade evolution unit, the complaint notes that "IBM's blade model servers [are] based on technology other than 'Power.'"
The complaint too says "Apple and IBM are competitors in the design, manufacture and sale of electronic devices, including servers, personal computers, and microprocessors," noting that while IBM sold its PC business to Lenovo, it continues to hold an interest in that company and generates "significant revenues" from it. It too lists Apple's Xserve as a direct competitor to IBM's System x and BladeCenter lines of little servers.
IBM's complaint says "the relationship between Apple and IBM will become even more competitive in the future." It notes Apple's acquisition of PA Semi, and states that "IBM and PA Semi occupy been competitors since at least 2006, when Apple, then a customer of IBM, considered replacing IBM's PowerPC microprocessors, which Apple used to incorporate in its line of personal computers, with microprocessors designed by PA Semi."
IBM offered Papermaster "a substantial enlarge in his total compensation package" to sojourn at IBM, including "one year's salary." The complaint says Papermaster asked for time to account the offer, then submitted his resignation the next day.
IBM and Lenovo executives are bullish that the $2.3 billion sale of IBM’s x86 server business to Lenovo, announced today, is satisfactory for channel partners and offers the potential for them to expand business opportunities with customers.
But which customers?
As Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president for IBM's Systems and Technology Group, made transparent in a media teleconference today regarding Lenovo’s plans to acquire IBM’s x86 server business, the high-tail is another specimen of how IBM continues to transform its business to lead major shifts in technology and remixes its portfolio to focus on higher-value products for enterprise clients.
In particular he referred to recent news regarding the formation of a current Watson business unit -- the IBM Watson Group -- dedicated to the evolution and commercialization of cognitive computing, as well as the opening of 40 data centers in 15 countries, a $1.2 billion investment to expand its global cloud computing infrastructure based its acquisition of SoftLayer Technologies Inc. in July 2013.
“We’re continually investing in innovation and are making Watson technology available in the cloud as a evolution platform for the worldwide community of software application providers,” Rosamilia said.
With the Lenovo/IBM x86 server sale – which includes System x, BladeCenter and Flex System blade servers and switches, x86-based Flex integrated systems, NeXtScale and iDataPlex servers and associated software, blade networking, and maintenance operations -- IBM can focus on system and software innovation in strategic areas such as tall data analytics, cloud and security, the company noted.
Peter Hortensius, senior vice president and president for the assume business Group with Lenovo, said: "Lenovo's track record in working with the channel speaks for itself. They are a very channel-focused company, and the feedback we've gotten early on from their channel partners has All been very positive. And they occupy a number [of partners both IBM and Lenovo] attain business with, and a number of IBM-unique or Lenovo-unique [partners], and this provides opportunity for All of them."
Today’s Lenovo/IBM x86 server announcement wasn’t unanticipated for IBM Premier business colleague imprint Wylie, CEO of Flagship Solutions Group, located in Boca Raton Fla., who has been hearing rumors of such a high-tail since last year.
“It’s a analytic shift for IBM away from what is historically a lower-margin business and frees up resources to focus on growth in emerging business markets, or non-hardware-intensive business,” he said.
While Flagship has been a tall PureFlex colleague for IBM and will breathe impacted by today’s announcement, the details of which are unclear at the moment, according to Wylie, the company too offers cloud computing solutions and deliver in one of the first software orders for SoftLayer when it became an IBM company.
“We work with companies that occupy hybrid cloud implementations and companies that occupy no on-site equipment at All who began their software evolution on Amazon cloud. I await many of these companies will high-tail to SoftLayer because it’s more enterprise-class,” he said.
Flagship is too working with a medical company and the Watson Group to determine what intelligence information can breathe gleaned from more than 10 million medical records for use in the future.
With little detailed information to fade on as to how the x86 server business sale impacts channel partners, it’s a wait-and-see situation. According to Hortensius, the transaction could pick another six to nine months to close.
While there were few details about the impact of the sale on IBM's channel partners, IBM and Lenovo did note that that they blueprint to enter into a strategic relationship that includes a global OEM and reseller agreement for sale of IBM’s entry and midrange Storwize disk storage systems; tape storage systems, universal Parallel File System software; SmartCloud Entry self-service portal; and elements of IBM’s system software portfolio, including Systems Director and Platform Computing solutions.
“We know IBM will OEM to Lenovo but will I, for example, breathe able to order in the Flex system using an IBM allotment number even it’s provided by Lenovo?” asked Wylie, noting that it’s too early to declare how things will pan out.
Still, IBM and Lenovo are bullish that today’s announcement is satisfactory news for channel partners, pointing out that there’s already overlap between what Lenovo has in its PC and server business and how IBM goes to market in System x.
Rosamilia said that today’s announcement exposes a more extensive portfolio and more opportunity for partners.
“Lenovo has products on the lower sojourn of the scale that they don’t occupy and allows us to occupy a broader portfolio going forward with their channel partners. Also, IBM has a full network of value partners and value distributors and now they occupy a better set of capabilities, flexibility and ease of doing business that we’re able to capture for better performance with them,” he said.
Stephen Leonard, universal manager of sales in IBM’s System and Technology Group, added that today’s announcement presents a powerful opportunity for channel partners to extend their business around both Lenovo and IBM products, such as the Power Systems, mainframe and storage products.
“We believe that the combination of these two things will strengthen the position their channel has in the marketplace and will give them the skill to compete much more [broadly] and deeper in the markets they serve and add more value to the clients that they support, he said.
At first glance, the Purism Librem 13 v2 looks affection a lot of other laptops on the market. It’s a compact notebook that measures about 0.7 inches thick, weighs about 3.3 pounds, and which has a 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a backlit keyboard, and a large touchpad.
But pick a closer gawk at the touchpad and you’ll notice that there’s a rectangle where you’d normally find a Windows key. And glance up to the space above the touchpad and you’ll find two hardware switches.
Those are some of the features that rate the Librem 13 really stand out. The missing Windows key is because this laptop ships with a GNU/Linux-based operating system called PureOS instead of Windows. It too uses an open source BIOS alternative called Coreboot. And the hardware switches? They physically disable or enable the webcam, mic, and wireless hardware.
Purism doesn’t just sell laptops. They sell laptops that hasten free and open source software with an accent on privacy and security. Those features carry a premium price tag though: the Librem 13 v2 sells for $1399 and up, which is more than twice what you’d pay for most laptops with similar specs.
But when you account what Purism is actually trying to attain with the Librem 13, there’s not a lot of competition.
So is the Librem 13 any good? Purism loaned me one for a few weeks so I could find out.Overview
The Librem 13 I tested is configured with 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 250GB of storage, bringing the price for this model to $1578. The entry-level configuration has just 4GB and 128GB, respectively.
Purism chose a core i5-6200U processor for this laptop. It’s a dual-core 6th-gen Intel Core “Skylake” processor, which would seem a little dated now that quad-core 8th-gen Core “Kaby Lake Refresh” chips are on the way. But it’s still a reasonably affection a glitter processor with modern features.
If you’re holding out for something newer though, Purism does blueprint to switch to 7th-gen “Kaby Lake” processors by the sojourn of 2017.
The laptop has a 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel matte, non-touch display, 802.11n Wifi, a 720p webcam, and stereo speakers.
There’s a USB 3.0 Type-C port, a USB 3.0 Type-A port, and a USB 2.0 Type-A port, as well as an HDMI 2.0 port, SD card reader, and 3.5mm audio jack.
Under the hood, the system features an M.2 slot for solid status storage and a 2.5 inch drive bay for an optional difficult drive. The laptop has a 45 Wh battery.
The hardware too features a Bluetooth radio, but as of August, 2017 the Librem 13 doesn’t occupy the software to back that feature.
It’s not really the hardware that makes this laptop special though. Purism is a companionable Purpose Corporation, which means that while the company hopes to rate money by selling its products, unlike a non-profit, there are a few other factors that play a large role in Purism’s mission aside from profit maximization.
The most valuable are that Purism priotities “privacy, security, and freedom for its customers,” “will only use and dole free/libre and open source software in the kernel, OS and software in its products,” and offers “hardware that respects uses’ rights to privacy, security, and freedom.”
That’s why you’ve got hardware switches to whirl off the webcam and Wifi, for example. Theoretically you could enable airplane mode on any computer, or rate positive your webcam software isn’t running. But if someone has installed malware on your computer, there’s a chance they could rate it gawk affection those features are off when they aren’t.
Purism’s laptops comprehend assassinate switches that physically sever the circuit to the mic, camera, and wireless components. Flip the switch when using the webcam for instance, and your camera app will back working, but you won’t remark yourself on the screen anymore because it’s as if you’d unplugged the camera in the middle of a video recording.
The respect for privacy extends to the software that ships with the laptop. PureOS is a GNU/Linux distribution featuring the GNOME 3 desktop environment and Wayland graphics. The operating system is free and open source, and it’s based on Debian and should breathe restful to use for anyone that’s used GNOME 3 before.
If you’re coming from Windows or OS X, there’s certainly a bit of a learning curve. But overall the user interface is pretty intuitive and I create it simple to download and install applications from the Software center.
Running third-party software from other sources was kind of a nightmare though. More on that below. But overall I collect the sentiment that PureOS is a powerful operating system for beginners who don’t exigency to hasten any software that’s not available from the Purism repository or for advanced users who will breathe better able to troubleshoot the issues I had.
I’d account myself a casual Linux user. While I’ve never used a GNU/Linux distro as my primary operating system for more than a few days at a time, I’ve played with various distros on and off for more than 10 years. So PureOS didn’t gawk completely alien when I first booted the computer, and I was pretty restful looking up terminal commands that I hadn’t memorized, I’m not exactly a Linux expert.
It’s too worth noting that some of the things that PureOS doesn’t attain out of the box are intentional. If you want a GNU/Linux distribution that makes it simple to stream videos from Netflix you can install Ubuntu or Linux Mint and use the Chrome web browser.
Sure, you can probably find a passage to attain it with PureOS. But if you’re interested in a computer that ships with free/libre software, then you’re probably not someone who’s looking for ways to stream DRM-protected video.Design
Purism’s laptop features a black anodized aluminum chassis that gives it a professional look… until you start to notice the fingerprint smudges that will inevitably issue on the cover and palm rest. back a cloth handy and you can wipe them away though.
Open the lid and you’re greeted with a matte IPS parade which looks satisfactory from just about any angle, and which doesn’t reflect much glare. The screen can open to a 130 degree angle, and Purism says the laptop has a reinforced metal hinge.
There’s a webcam and microphone in the bezel above the screen, and a assassinate switch to disable them below the screen (and above the top row of keys on the keyboard).
The screen is recessed a bit behind the bezels, and there’s something about the laptop that makes me back forgetting it doesn’t occupy a touchscreen. I assume it’s the fact that the GNOME 3 desktop environment seems so touchable, but reaching up to the screen does no good.
That brings us to the touchpad and keyboard, which are… serviceable, but not great. The backlit keys offer decent travel and the placement of the Fn and arrow keys is pretty straightforward. But I find myself making more typos than I’m used to when using the keyboard. I seem to occupy a particularly tough time capitalizing letters, so I’m going to blame the shift key.
I attain find that the more time I disburse using the laptop, the more accurate my typing gets, so it might just breathe something that takes a bit of getting used to.
Another keyboard quirk that annoyed me was the want of an indicator to let you know when Caps Lock or Number Lock are enabled. While it’s not usually too difficult to motif that out when you’re typing in LibreOffice Writer, I did find myself struggling to enter a password on the login screen a number of times because I couldn’t motif out if those asterisks showing up on the screen were representing capital or lower case letters.
The touchpad is large, offers a bit of friction, and supports four-finger multitouch gestures. But it’s not the most precise touchpad I’ve ever used, and I generally create the laptop to breathe easier to use when I plugged in a mouse.
Speaking of connecting additional hardware, I had no problem hooking up an external display, keyboard, and mouse and using the laptop affection a dual-display desktop. The second screen was recognized immediately, and after fiddling with the computer’s parade settings for a few minutes I was able to imprint the external parade as the primary monitor and extend the desktop onto the laptop screen.
I was too able to connect to a WiFi printer on my home network almost instantly.
Part of the appeal of buying a laptop that comes with Linux pre-installed is that you don’t exigency to worry about hardware compatibility… with the laptop’s hardware. So it’s nice to know that common peripherals are too simple to set up.
The laptop is too simple to upgrade. There are 12 screws holding the bottom cover in place, but once you remove them you can open up the case and replace the difficult drive or M.2 SSD. Since the version Purism loaned me only has an SSD, the 2.5 inch drive bay is empty, which means adding storage is as simple as popping in a difficult drive or SSD.
You’ll too notice that there’s a little fan inside the case. But Purism says one of the laptop’s selling points is its “low racket fan,” and in my time using the notebook, I occupy to counsel I’ve barely noticed any fan noise. That said, I’ve gotten used to using an Acer Aspire S 13 over the past year, and that laptop has a super-noisy fan, so most laptops would sound reticent by comparison.Software
There aren’t All that many companies that offer computers with GNU/Linux-based operating systems, and there are even fewer that develop their own OS rather than just slapping Ubuntu on an existing laptop.
Since the Librem 13 doesn’t further with Windows, you don’t exigency to fade through the smart of overwriting the operating system and hoping that the WiFi, graphics and other components will work. Purism did the cumbersome lifting on that front.
If you’re not a fan of paying for software you’re never going to use, then there’s too no “Windows tax,” on this laptop, because zilch of the money you’re paying goes to Microsoft to pay for a Windows license. That doesn’t signify the laptop is cheaper than a Windows model though… Purism is a relatively little company that doesn’t occupy the economies of scale that succor Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer, and Asus back the prices of their Windows laptops relatively low.
But what you attain collect for your $1399 or more is a fully functional computer with a fully functional operating system… assuming you can motif out how to rate it meet your needs. And if you can’t, there’s nothing stopping you from installing Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, or a different operating system on the laptop.
PureOS comes with just a few applications pre-installed, including LibreOffice, a photo viewer, music and video players, a Maps application, To attain list, and Thunderbird email client.
There’s too a web browser called PureBrowser, which is basically a modified version of Firefox with the HTTPS Everywhere and uBlock origin add-ons pre-installed.
Purism too plans to launch a secure mail app called PureMail, but it wasn’t ready at the time of this review.
Overall, the list of pre-loaded applications was selected by choosing software that respects users’ privacy. Purism points out that other software available for download are DRM-free and devoid of “spyware, tracking, or ransoming” but I assume that helps set PureOS apart from Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS rather than other GNU/Linux operating systems. I mean, you can find Linux games and programs that comprehend DRM or spyware. But they’re not exactly in the majority.
When I started testing the laptop, PureBrowser was too unable to access some websites including Gmail and YouTube, but I’ve been told that Purism’s developers blueprint to fix that in an upcoming update.
Personally, I got around the issue by installing Chromium, the open source version of Google’s Chrome browser. Once I’d installed Chromium and the GIMP image editing tool, I create it simple to use the Librem 13 for all-day work sessions. As a tech blogger, that basically means opening two or more browser windows and maybe a dozen or more tabs at a time while researching and writing stories and resizing and cropping images to upload.
I’m always impressed at how quickly GIMP loads on a Linux-based computer. It’s available for Windows and I use it whenever I exigency something a little more powerful than Irfanview. But GIMP takes forever to load on a Windows computer. It starts almost instantly in PureOS.
GIMP wasn’t installed out of the box, but loading it was as simple as opening the Software center, searching for GIMP, and clicking the install button.
There’s a decent array of software available for installation, including multimedia tools such as Audacity, Ardour, Audacious, and even some music players and editors that don’t start with the missive A. I installed the Cheese camera app because I didn’t remark one preloaded. Video tools including Kodi, Kino, and Handbrake are too in the Software center.
Other categories comprehend productivity, communication & news, and graphics & photography. And then there are games.
While there are a handful of impressive, DRM-free, open source games affection 0 A.D available for download, the selection of games is a little underwhelming.
So I decided to remark if I could collect some other Linux-compatible titles to work. First I tried installing the Steam Client for Linux by downloading and running the installer. Everything seemed fine, and there’s even a Steam shortcut on the computer now. but when I try to hasten Steam I collect a message letting me know that I’m missing the LibGL.so.1 32-bit library.
Next I tried just downloading and installing a few games I’d previously purchased via GOG and Humble Bundle. I could only collect one to install… and it crashed every time I tried to hasten it. The others gave me error messages whenever I tried to hasten the installers.
I don’t know if that’s because these games are designed for Ubuntu rather than PureOS/Debian or if there’s some other obvious thing I’m overlooking. All of the games I tired to install are DRM-free, but zilch are open source. So honestly, I don’t know if they’re titles that Purism’s customers will keeping about. But I wanted to remark what I could attain with this laptop that didn’t involve replacing the operating system, and for the most allotment the reply is that I can hasten software that’s maintained specifically for PureOS.
One third-party utensil I was able to install was the Phoronix Test Suite, which includes a number of performance benchmarks for Linux computers. Running the gross suite would pick a while, but if there are any scores you’d affection to remark let me know and maybe I’ll hasten a few tests before I recrudesce the laptop.
Again, I’m a Linux lightweight. Odds are that experts will breathe able to find workarounds for some of the issues I experienced… and free software enthusiasts probably won’t keeping that much about the fact that Netflix, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, and Hulu don’t work out of the box.Performance
After using the Librem 13 on and off for work over the past few weeks, I occupy to counsel sometimes it’s simple to forget whether I’m using my Acer laptop with WIndows or Purism’s Linux-powered laptop. That’s partly because the vast majority of my workday is spent in a web browser. But it’s too partly because both are laptops with Skylake chips, 8GB of RAM, and solid status drives.
Performance-wise, they both manipulate multitasking affection a champ, boot and resume from sleep quickly, and occupy enough horsepower for most of the fairly straightforward tasks I hurl at them. And since they can both hasten Chrome and/or Chromium, I’m pretty restful working on either laptop… although I use GIMP a lot more on the Librem 13 because trying to collect Irfanview up and running on Linux usually involves installing and configuring WINE so that I can hasten WIndows applications, which seems affection a silly thing to attain on a laptop from a corporation focused on software freedom.
Installing Handbrake allowed me to attain some video transcoding. Loading 0 A.D. let me lose myself in the real-time strategy game for a few hours. And while I didn’t work very difficult to collect Netflix to work, I wasted plenty of time watching cat videos (and music videos, and a few tech-related videos) on YouTube.
Basically, aside from the issues I had when trying to install software that wasn’t in the PureOS repository, the Librem 13 functioned affection a reasonably good, reasonably modern laptop. And the assassinate switches worked exactly as described: toggle the camera switch and it’s as if you’ve unplugged the webcam. It won’t breathe recognized by any software until you flip the switch back to the other direction (and you may exigency to restart your photo or video app while you’re at it. The wireless switch too quickly disconnects you from WiFi.
Unfortunately while Purism claims that the laptop should collect 7 to 9 hours of battery life, in my experience 4 to 6 was much more common. You may breathe able to attain better, depending on what you use the notebook for.Verdict
If you’re looking for a compact laptop that runs GNU/Linux software, there are a handful of alternatives, including computers from ZaReason, System76, and Dell. But Purism takes things a step further by shipping its laptops with Coreboot and focusing on hardware and software that emphasizes privacy.
Overall, it’s nice to occupy the option of buying a laptop that comes with a GNU/Linux distro and Coreboot and doesn’t require a lot of work to set up. But I suspect this laptop will still breathe a better appropriate for experienced Linux users than for long-time Windows or Mac users, since you might exigency to dig into the settings or fire up a terminal window to collect some things done.
The hardware assassinate switches too succor poise convenience with security: you occupy a webcam when you exigency it. But you can disable it whenever you don’t.
In that sense, this laptop doesn’t really occupy much competition (unless you account a piece of tape to breathe competition). But the towering starting price, the mediocre battery life, and the finnicky mouse and keyboard rate it a little tough to recommend.
If the laptop were half the price, I could probably overlook some of those hardware issues. But if you’re going to freight $1399 for a notebook at a time when you can find laptops with similar (or better) specs for $700 or less, it’s difficult to justify spending that kind of money on a model that has less-than-stellar hardware.
That said, it’d breathe tough for a little company affection Purism to match Acer, Asus, or Dell on price. If you value privacy and software freedom over All else, then the Librem 13 v2 might breathe worth your money… especially if you want to back one of the few organizations working to deliver laptops that appropriate that description.
And it’s not that the keyboard and touchpad are horrible. They just aren’t really as satisfactory as I’d affection them to be. Purism too notes that the current touchpad is an upgrade over the version used in previous laptops, so at least there’s that.
